I saw the road to hell yesterday and yep, it WAS paved with "good intentions..."

Saved, to glorify God.
Let me preface this with My husband DIED of a "nosocomial", hospital acquired MRSA infection.
Yesterday, (Thursday) I went to THAT same hospital to pick up prescription refills at the main pharmacy.
There were AT LEAST a hundred people, maybe a hundred fifty in the pharmacy waiting room.
To speed up the flow of people, it is not unusual for some pharmacy person or volunteer to "line up" those with the next ten or so numbers to be called so they will already be ready to step to one of the dozen dispensing windows.
YESTERDAY, that person lining up the sick people waiting for their medicine was a young black red cross volunteer who couldn't have been over 20 IF he was even that old.
He had a red cross volunteer vest LOADED with commendations from what must have been a LONG history of volunteering at the hospital.
He was the happiest, most friendly person I have seen in YEARS. He seemed to LOVE people. HE ESPECIALLY LOVED BABIES, TODDLERS and little kids.
He loved EVERYBODY, He was
Borderline RETARDED or whatever that is currently called.................
...............................................
....................................................
And, He could not keep his hands off of people.
As EACH sick person came in the line he SHOOK HANDS WITH THEM, PATTED THEM ON THE BACK and all but hugged them, passing the strep germs on the first guy to the person with staph infection, along with the flu germs on the next person to the lady with a weakened immune system, followed by glad handing the fella with contagious carbuncles before he decides he has to wipe all these germs on a six month old BABY'S face and hands and likewise the baby's almost two year old sister.
I watched as people coughed in their hands and wiped their noses and one lady sat in a wheelchair holding her head and a Barf basin. I looked back at the Red cross volunteer as he glad handed some more sick people and was zeroing in on about a 15 month old toddler and I jumped up and did not manage to stop him before he had his hands all over the baby's face and both of baby's hands telling her mama how "beautiful she was, what a precious child."

I dragged him aside and told him "It is NOT A GOOD IDEA to shake hands and pat each sick person and then touch babies faces and hands because it puts new germs on people that could make them even sicker". I got a "Yes, Mam". But you can tell when "the lights are on and nobody is home look" that he really didn't understand and would probably resume his normal habits as soon as I left.

I am just sick about this. Has he been going room to room in the hospital "cheering up" people, helping out and like typhoid Mary spreading MRSA, TB, staph, strep, and who knows what else?? He was UTTERLY CLUELESS about infection precautions and it was obvious nobody had successfully trained him about it.

NOT that he shouldn't be there volunteering, but if he cannot be taught the danger of what he was doing, he should be in a job that doesn't involve going from patient to patient. HUNDREDS of patients per hour or two.
I tried to call the hospital later to talk to someone, ANYONE about it.

IT WAS OVER TWO AND A HALF HOURS OF DIALING DIFFERENT HOSPITAL NUMBERS BEFORE I GOT ANYTHING OTHER THAN A PHONE TREE RECORDING!!!!
I AM NOT EXAGGERATING BY EVEN A MINUTE.
NOBODY ANSWERS THE PHONE AT MADIGAN ARMY MEDICAL CENTER!

Finally, I spoke to someone who didn't seem to see any big problem with his behavior, but upon my insistence, assured me that she would pass it along to someone who would look into it. (I seriously doubt that was said for any reason but to dismiss me)
BTW, With all that 2.5+ hrs of dialing, I left COUNTLESS messages on recorders, AND NOBODY PHONED ME BACK TODAY (Friday)

With all the medical 'professionals' who should be there it's hard to believe that nobody could see the danger here and one of the patients was the one to see the danger. They ought to make the guy were latex gloves and to refrain as much a possible from direct contact. It's great that he's that personable but obviously he doesn't see the danger involved but the people that put him in the clinic should.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweiss . Ainitfunny, the incompetent idiots who are running that hospital need to be corrected. I hate to say this but if you want to do something you should contact their legal department and mention that anyone who contracts a hospital-caused infection can file suit based on their allowing this practice to continue. I hate to get lawyers involved in anything but sometimes those are the only ones idiots will listen to.

Well, I spent hours on the internet searching for an e-mail address for someone ANYONE or clinic or department at MADIGAN AND finally found ONE email address that I had overlooked earlier.

I sent them a copy of the original post above with an exhortation to take care of this gap in infection control.
I told them it's THEIR PROBLEM not mine any more.

I did not want a "reply" to my email, I figure they will either take care of it or not. If they take care of it, fine, that's all I want. If they DON'T intend to do anything they will just lie to me in any email reply anyway. That would just make me angry because I can detect a lie.
I'm done with it.
I just posted it to let people know to be cautious and DON'T LET STRANGERS IN A HOSPITAL TOUCH YOUR BABY.

Looks like you caught them Ainit, red handed. That's a great way to drum up business, kill off as many of us as possible and enslave the rest of the population to more debt and slavery. Sounds great! Right down the path to hell is right and most gladly go along with it thinking this is great and they want to drag the rest of us with them. No thanks. I would avoid that place at all costs.

Call the county health Dept. and try to get some sort of committment from the head honcho. If you get no suitable response. You could say aren't you obligated to report this to the CDC. Or something to that affect. You could say, "Do you want me to call that lady back at the CDC, that was so concerned?", " Or is this your area?". You are truly saving lives if you can get something done!! Don't give-up. I think about those precious little babies!

I just thought of something else...the poor volunteer! That's not fair to him either. You could call OSHA about that. He should not be allowed to naively expose himself to horrible deadly diseases! Poor dear.

It is bad enough, we don't have to take it over the top to get the seriousness dismissed in ridicule. I'm done with it. Age gives you the perspective of knowing you can't attack the system without personally paying greatly in one way or another and accomplishing nothing you wanted. It suffices to bring bad situations that need correcting to the light and allowing whatever good willed people who populate that system to step up to the plate and rectify the matter. They either do or they don't.

It wouldn't surprise me that they may quietly remove that guy touching everybody.

There are so many rooms in a hospital that you cannot enter without a mask and protective gloves.

If this info about that guy gets out to the public, who knows how many diseases he tranfered from one patient or customer to the next. All it will take is one case be taken to an attorney and all hell will break loose. And since the guy is working for the hospital, volunteer or not, that leaves the hospital responsible.

aif. I honestly don't believe all your efforts have fallen on deaf ears. This is very dangerous ground this hospital is walking on. I doubt if the CEO's? of this place had a clue as to what was going on until you filled them in.

Not to be heartless or cruel or a wee bit paranoid but that is an excellent way for the hospital to eventually raise revenue. Spread sickness anyway they can. Its all about the almighty dollar.

My son uses the VA hosp. in Dayton. Yep that is the one where the dentist didn't sterilize his instruments between patients! Some got hepatitis and who knows what else. Makes you feel confident. My beef is, son is trying to hold down a job and works first shift. He has a staph infection that they lance every so often but he has to take off work to see a doctor. Work isn't happy when he takes off and he doesn't want to jeopardize his job. He has other issues being a bad shoulder since Iraq. They don't even call back when they are supposed to schedule a mri. When he goes down there, they start over again with xrays and pain medication. They will make him an addict if they don't stop it. He's at the point of why bother which worries me. Thought vets were going to be taken care of! Think the next step will be to contact our representative!

And what Krymsonowl said, it is just building residual business for the hospital. LOL Obama bucks wont cut it.

When you see something like the guy touching all the sick folk, go directly to the hospital administrator and advise him/her that you will be filing a report with the state board of health. The hospital administrator will usually take very quick action to avoid this.

Has No Life - Lives on TB
Every hospital has an Infection Control department. It is the IC department nurse that puts those signs up about covering your cough, etc., and making sure the hand sanitizer are kept filled. They also train all personnel about infection control procedures. Annually. They also train volunteers.

Contact that department. It is overseen by a doctor. There are regular meetings where discussions take place re the hospital's infection rates, tracking infections - whether MRSA is community-acquired or nosocomial, drug-resistant cases, etc. They are very concerned about their statistics, and now some insurance companies won't pay for treatment required for an infection acquired there.

So yes, it's about the money. If/when you reach the right person, they WILL take action.

Thank you, Ainit, for reporting this. Hopefully it will make that hospital safer for everyone.

This thread needs to be on Main. Everyone needs to be aware of infection control procedures, and especially where they are not being followed. It WILL save lives!

Call the MEDIA if you get no response from the hospital. Better still, go back and FILM him doing this (if you have a phone with recording capability) and then send that to the local media. THAT will make the hospital sit up and take notice!

I have learned that sometimes the ONLY way to make folks do what they are SUPPOSED to do is threaten to EXPOSE (no pun intended) their wrongdoing publicly to everyone.

Cool it folks, I did report it to the hospital powers that be. I rely on them doing their job after they were made aware of the problem.
My posting it here was just to make people aware of the need to be cautious in that environment and DON'T LET ANY FRIENDLY STRANGER, whether it is a DOCTOR, NURSE, TECHNICIAN OR VOLUNTEER touch you or your child UNNECESSARILY, because if they are glad handing YOU they are glad handing other SICK people, everybody AND unknowingly spreading bacteria and viruses from one sick person to another person.

Aintitfunny, it isn;t funny at all, and I am so sorry for your loss (per the 1st line in your OP). To go on the crusade against infection like you did takes great fortitude when, at the same time, you are grieving over the passing of your husband.

I had some friends that had natural childbirth. They refused to take their baby out in public for 6 weeks after she was born. Once they started taking here out , they would not let anyone (but themselves) touch her for 3 or 4 months. This included relatives and friends. At first I thought they were just being fanatical, but now I believe they were probably right.

I did not mean to mislead anyone. I has been 4 years since he died. I am not on any crusade. I just happened to see what I saw and knew the personal consequences of poor infection control in a hospital. It matters.
Thank you for you condolences.

Because a lot of the people in this country have a "F*** you, got mine" attitude and don't give a crap about other human beings anymore. Thank you for at least TRYING to correct it. Unfortunately it's up to each individual to protect themselves nowadays from people like this.

Aintfunny,
God bless ya... If you saved one life, it was worth it to STAND UP and say NO! Now submit it to the media, make 'anonymous unsubstantiated charges'. Stir the pot, the same way the left does. Warn the media guys, they print it, or you escalate, and include them in the 'cover up'....;)

Read a report, several weeks ago, from a guy with a friend in medical school. Med school's usually graduate about 60+percent of people who start. This year, the word went out for the students not to worry about failing, that "the whole class was going to graduate". This person knew many in the class had no business being doctors, or even nurses. But 'bamaCare is coming...and they need lots of unqualified white coats to fill slots. We wondered why the gov runs with no budget now? Trillions disappeared...
Pray, it will get worse even if it is struck down by the Supremes, then the FSA will go nuts. If it passes the good guys will go nuts. I will, because I will not comply, I will not submit, I will not pay for the murder of the unborn, nor the risk free sexual habits of the hedonists.
I will not allow them to redefine society in their image, when all I have to do is say STAND, and say NO. No more turn the other cheek, there are no more cheeks to turn. No more backing up, we're standing on the edge of a cliff. NO more pretty please. No more 'rallies'. No more protests. No more mr nice guy. Time to sell your coat, buy a sword and kick the money changers out of the temple.
This is not just incompetence, this is systemic evil.

:shkr: GGGRRRRRRRRH!!!! HE IS BACK!!

AIEEEEEEEAH! :sht:

Damn it.
I went BACK to that same pharmacy YESTERDAY for medication refills, AND THAT SAME VOLUNTEER was BACK, glad handing sick people waiting for their meds in the pharmacy.

I SAW HIM GLAD HAND THREE PEOPLE BEFORE I JUMPED UP AND STOPPED HIM, AGAIN!
I did not see him touch any infants or toddlers, but did not wait for him to do that before THIS TIME, I did not just tell one of the people dispensing meds at one of the pharmacy windows, THIS TIME I MARCHED TO A WINDOW AND DEMANDED TO SPEAK TO WHOMEVER WAS IN CHARGE OF THE PHARMACY.

I explained the problem, and THEY TOLD ME I HAD TO MAKE ALLOWANCES for the volunteer because (he wasn't "retarded", as he appeared, I learned,) he was AUTISTIC. I told them IT DIDN'T MATTER, IF HE CANNOT LEARN TO OBSERVE PROPER (infection control) behavior HE SHOULD BE MOVED TO SOME OTHER VOLUNTEER JOB, NOT in direct contact with large numbers of sick people! I had no complaint with the GOOD INTENTIONS of the volunteer who was a genuinely super happy, friendly, clueless volunteer, who could be SPREADING whooping cough, staph, FLU, strep, MRSA, hepatitis, TB or who knows what infections from patient to patient.

I WARNED THEM if it wasn't corrected immediately I was going to take the problem to the Hospital and BASE COMMANDERS.

If I WAS TRYING TO TEACH HIM, I would make him put on a pair of rubber gloves and put vaseline all over them except for one finger (so he could push the "next number up" button in the pharmacy. ) THEN I WOULD TELL HIM "You have vaseline all over your gloves, don't get it on anything or anybody."

I would try to contact the infection control nurse again. Maybe they have had turnover and someone who actually cares is there now. Also, I know in my hospital, there is a director of volunteers that oversees the volunteers, try to contact them also. And remind everyone that if the young man gets sick and something happens to him, his family will probably sue the hospital. Maybe since it is a mil hospital they aren't as concerned about the patients suing?

I am all for volunteers, but there are places they shouldn't be. My hospital insists on using a volunteer to check in the patients for surgery. I couldn't tell you how many times we are told a patient isn't here yet, only to find out later they had been in the waiting room all along, but for some reason the volunteer didn't pass the word along.

Perhaps the young man could deliver drugs to the different departments. We had a young volunteer with cerebral palsy. Pharmacy would give him stock medicines(NO controlled drugs) to deliver to the different departments. In doing so he also got to visit with everyone.

(19) Horizontal transmission

(a) Transmission of a pathogen can be either horizontal or vertical

(b) Horizontal means transmission between individuals specifically who are not related as a parent is to its offspring

(c) [horizontal transmission (Google Search)] [index]

(20) Vertical transmission

(a) Vertical transmission occurs from parent to offspring, e.g., in utero, during passage down the birth canal, or in breast milk

(b) Typically pathogens that have evolved for vertical transmission cannot be as virulent as those that have evolved for horizontal transfer since the recipient of the transfer must survive until reproductive maturity to pass on the pathogen

(c) However, note that not all (nor even most) pathogens that may be transmitted vertically have evolved for that mode of transmission (so, just as hybridomas and monoclonal antibodies typically are not made by employing recombinant DNA technology, don't leave this discussion thinking that all pathogens that may be passed from parent to offspring are harmless--most are instead just in the wrong place at the wrong time so far as the poor baby is concerned)

(23) Direct fecal-oral transmission

(a) Direct fecal-oral transmission is an example of direct contact transmission where inappropriate hygiene (or kinky sexual practices) result in the direct contact between an individual and another individual's feces

I was just at a hospital here, had glue inserted into a vertebra. I was very surprised at their restrooms.I have been taught HOW to wash my hands. you scrub the crap out of them with whatever is availible for soap/cleaner. do not turn off the water-Then you get 2 or more paper towels, dry yourself, then turn off the water with the paper towels and open the door with same towels. They are supposed to have the trash AT THE DOOR. its clear across the room for petes sake. in those cases i just keep the towels crumpled until i find a basket to dump it in. I seldom touch anything these days if i can help it.
sigh.

An Aside, do not believe them when they say you will walk out of the vertebroplasty completely pain free.

Folks, I was BACK in that same pharmacy yesterday and the SAME YOUNG MAN was there STILL glad handing sick people in the pharmacy.

THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I COMPLAINED TO PHARMACY SUPERVISORY STAFF.(post #1, post #27, now this post)
THIS TIME, they did not even pretend to want do change anything, but dug in their heels and said such things as "Nobody is FORCED to shake his hand" and "We don't see any problem involving infection control, we pass infection control inspections", "Doctors shake patient's hands" etc.

I am not sure where I take it from here. I hate to go to a higher level or cause trouble for other people if I can solve problems at the lowest level possible. THERE IS THE HOSPITAL COMMANDER, THE HOSPITAL INFECTION CONTROL PEOPLE,THE BASE COMMANDER, THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND LASTLY THE NEWS PEOPLE.

I may be wrong, but I DO think that this STAFF behavior is INCREASING the risk of spreading infections.

SHAKING HANDS was the very way I WAS TAUGHT the importance of PROPER INFECTION CONTROL METHODS. At the beginning of the class, My teacher applied invisible powder which would glow under UV light to ONE person's hand and THEN had us shaking hands, then at the end of the class, the lights were dimmed, a UV light turned on, and WE SAW ON OUR HANDS THAT THE "PRETEND GERM" HAD MADE THE ROUNDS TO EVERYONE'S HANDS!! We saw everything glowing in the room that our hands had deposited that "pretend germ" upon: pens, doorknob, tables, cups etc.

That SO scared me that I wanted to IMMEDIATELY go wash my hands for fear of the REAL GERMS that may have been invisibly passed among the thirty people in the room shaking hands.

Ironically, I was thinking about you today, as I watched the young volunteer in a wheelchair delivering his bags of medicines to the different departments. But he does not shake everyone's hands, he is content to visit verbally.

Tuesday July 23,2014, went to pick up meds at MADIGAN ARMY HOSPITAL PHARMACY, and the infection spreading volunteer WAS STILL THERE, 2 1/2 years later, touching, INITIATING HANDSHAKES AND HUGS WITH ALL THE SICK PATIENTS IN THE PHARMACY, spreading one person's germs to the next and NEVER "cleaning his hands" in any way during the whole theatre of the absurd.

He is "A VERY YOUNG, BLACK. RETARDED, WEARING A VOLUNTEER VEST LOADED WITH AWARDS, and OVERLY FRIENDLY."
WHO would DARE RISK BEING THOUGHT RACIST or " not PC" and to BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO REFUSE TO SHAKE THIS RESIDENT "typhoid Mary's HAND??
I watch, almost NOBODY fails to shake his hand when he sticks it in their face! Even people who VISIBLY show that they do not wish to shake hands finally cave in order to not create a scene or draw attention to themselves! His hugs are also uninvited! MOTHERS, who woul not allow any WHITE STRANGER to touch their baby, with babies cringingly ALLOW this young man to touch their babies face, afraid of being called racist if they object.

If this was NOT a concentrated, room full of KNOWN SICK PEOPLE, I would not be objecting at all!
I would not think it wise, and would not participate, but the probability of spreading disease would be EXPONENTIALLY LOWER in a "normal", random group of people.

Saved, to glorify God.
Well, May 2018, visited the Madigan pharmacy and AGAIN SAW THE BLACK, RETARDED RED CROSS VOLUNTEER STILL SPREADING GERMS IN THE PHARMACY AMONG over a hundred PATIENTS, going from on patient to another, TOUCHING INFANTS, TODDLERS AND SMALL CHILDREN WITHOUT WARNING OR PERMISSION shaking hands, hugging, touching faces, he has been spreading disease and Death and germs for ten years!

I stopped a parent and warned him to “Immediately wash your toddlers hands!”, (He immediately DID) after “typhoid tony” had put his hands all over her, and I explained why. That father kept coming back several times thanking me for the warning.

We have patients with strep, staph, c-diff, whooping cough, flu, impeteigo, fungus infections, drug resistant TB, mono, and every other thing that could put them in a hospital pharmacy waiting for meds!! Even BABIES AND TODDLERS, who have recently been vaccinated for POLIO with the attenuated live virus CAN TRANSMIT POLIO to others, especiall weak or immune compromised patients, if infection control is sloppy!

I do not know what more I can do to squelch this man’s spreading infection and disease among the patients. I said nothing this time, I did not complain again, (after complaining for the past ten years) nobody among Madigan hospital staff listens and nobody understands or acts to stop it.

Again, I am not an idiot or “Germaphobic”, If this was NOT a concentrated, room full of KNOWN SICK PEOPLE, I would not be objecting at all!
I would not think it wise, and would not participate with the germ swapping, but the probability of that Red cross volunteer spreading disease would be EXPONENTIALLY LOWER in a random group or room full of (presumed ) healthy people.

Oh for pete's sakes, what a tragedy. You are dealing with complacent clods who evidently value job security over common sense.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Maybe the health dept. needs to be alerted. You are cognizant of this important issue for a reason. I really hope that there are other level-headed peeps complaining so these numbskulls get a clue.

I believe they are all PREVENTED BY “POLITICAL CORRECTNESS” from doing anything about it!
He is BLACK, so they think twice about doing anything.
He is DISABLED, so they are further hesitant to do anything.
He is a VOLUNTEER, further putting him beyond correction.
He is UNTEACHABLE, since I Saw a slight correction in his behavior initially for a short while, when i first complained years ago, but he soon “apparantly forgot”.
He is genuinely LIKABLE, enthusiastic, friendly, a valuable member of the “team”, whose GOOD INTENTIONS need to be REDIRECTED to a different, less potentially harmful “job” in the medical facility.

So follow the guy around and offer germicide to the folks he touches
I'm certain Madigan has A spare bottle for your cause

Then Everybody is happy and everybody gets germ free and you get to do something positive with your free time
