Question for those that do? Do any of you know what chemicals they are using to clean carts? Have any of you looked at the SDS/MSDS to see what is in it and what problems it may cause? 2 times in the last week I have gone in last Saturday and last night. first time in months because they have everything shut down except the food side doors because of the covid. Last week I became sort of breath, lasted about an hr after I left, last night being in for less then 10 minutes the smell was so strong I reeked of it coming out and was short of breath and felt like I could not catch my breath before I left the store. I only felt like I was guppy breathing and after 3 hrs it started to feel better. I was not totally feeling better until 12midnight when I finally felt safe enough to go to bed. I have asked several employees what the chemical is and no one knows it something walmart sends for them to clean with is the answer I get!

I know the last 3 times I’ve been at check out my eyes were burning and nostril had that sting. Went through the gas chambers in the USAF, same sensations just not quite that strong.

They have a specific chemical to use, but that lasts as long as the first bottle. After that, who really knows what they are using in each store. A lot of this depends upon their ability to restock the cleaning items and we all know how badly that has been going on.

So each store will be different in what they use no matter what CORP says. How different? The longer it takes to restock, the bigger the difference.

Some sort of anti-viral aerosol in the air system? You might want to call, and ask to speak to the store manager. Otherwise, I would expect that if one WM is doing something, all are.

WM stores used to have a distinct smell. Didn't matter if the WM was in Cali, or IA; they all carried the same stink, and I always came out of the store with a headache. The merch. from there would also stink at home for for some time - you could smell it even on the plastic shopping bag. Several years ago, the stink went away (mostly, and slightly different, not nearly as nauseating). Now, the local Dollar stores have that same older stink, and anything purchased there carries the same smell. I hate that smell! Never found out exactly what it is from.

I know that doesn't answer the question...sorry.

My wife has the same (but more severe) reaction to ordinary Lysol. Someone in her dental office used it. Her breathing difficulties were so bad they called paramedics who coded her Red. Transported and later released with no lasting effects.

Even before the C-19 existed, I never was able to go inside Walmart without my eyes watering up really bad. I never did know what caused that. Now, I just don't go.

Probably all the made in China crap that got fumigated in the containers on arrival at the dock.

It could have been something like that. I always had a headache, too, before I left the store. Any number of "things" encountered inside Walmart could have contributed to the headaches, though. Need I say more?

I made my last trip last night, will not be back in.
If it important wear gloves. It may be through skin contact and not airborne.I don't think ours is even sanitizing their carts anymore. For a while they were a little tacky, but are not now. When i go out i carry my own wipes and assume the carts have not been cleaned.I know at the local Aldis they have stopped their constant cleaning. They had a person outside wiping them down as you returned them. Now there is no one there, just use them, hook them up and the next person gets to use what ever you leave.

Maybe get a cart from the parking lot, that has been sitting out in the sun? I've seen people in cities walking home wheeling their own little fold-up grocery carts. That might be an option.

Speaking of distinctive stinks...
Most fast food places, and EVERY McDonald's I've ever entered, ever since I was a kid has had the same chemical smell wafting out to the restroom hallway. The smell taints all the food, even the black coffee (which is about all I ever get, and even that has been about ten years, so things may have since changed), yet no one else ever seems to notice it. To me, it is specifically unique, unpleasant, and overwhelming.
I don't get that.

I know exactly what you mean. It gives me allergy attacks. The Dollar Tree is the worst for me. I don't go to Wally World unless it's an emergency.

I think it's some anti-fungal agent that China sprays every thing with when they load shipments for transport.

Each store is required to have Material Data Safety Sheets (MSDS) on EVERY product they use. Of course, you’d need to know the name of the product to look it up. I’d think if you asked the manager what they’re using on the carts, the manager should know the name, and could then look it up.

Of course, all the managers around here seem to be barely into their 20’s, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they were clueless.

I know that I can't go into those cheap "Dollar" stores because of the outgasing of the Chinese plastic crap they sell there. Gives me a tremendous headache. If I walk anywhere near the isle that has all the plastic cooking stuff it's like getting kicked in the head. Couldn't figure out what was happening until we bought a package of plastic cooking spatulas, ladles and spoons. Got them home and OMG the odor was horrid. Took them immediately back and haven't gone in one of those stores since. I also can't walk down the soap and cleanser isles in grocery stores, get the same headache and start sneezing. I guess getting older certain smells and such now get to me. Who knew? YMMV

Glad I have avoided that place. Bet these chemicals can be easily detected through a mask.

And I am curious as to what they are, too, what people are being subjected to; this is an important thread.

We have thought for years that walmart is spraying something into the ventilation system.

Sometimes, I can walk thru walmart for about 10 min and start to fill weak. Sometimes it is isolated to a particular area. Walk back outside and we feel fine.

Whatever it is, it's not good.

I don't have migraines, but if I go into the laundry/cleaning aisle, my throat closes right up. Very scary. And with emphysema, it's really hard to hold my breath and dash to the place on the shelf that holds the Ajax liquid and then get out again.

By now, I probably already have enough to last the rest of my life and then some. Plus the scent has changed and I can't handle the new stuff. Good thing I got so much of it before the scent change!

I can't go into Dollar General at all once they have their Christmas stuff fully out. Scented candles do horrible things to me. Have to avoid that aisle at WM, too.

That's why a list is helpful. Get in and get out as fast as possible. Go at the end of the day if you are sensitive to airborne disinfectants. Wear gloves, even light winter gloves, will help if you are breaking out due to what they are putting on shopping carts.

The Walmart I go to seems to do as little as they can. If we have a large uptick in CV-19 in my area, I won't go there (or out to stores much), but most of the uptick in outbreaks is around the meat packing plants (Iowa).

Good luck if you are sensitive. Whatever they are using in Menard's bothers me a lot more. I can do about six minutes in the store before I start getting a headache. I either have to go to the garden center or leave at that point. Fortunately, I have everything from them I need at the moment. I don't have this problem in Lowe's or HD.

This is why I make my own clothes washing soap & only use Kirk's Castile for body use. No smells.
