I do understand that there are people of differing levels of intelligence. Yet, today I was gobsmacked by a client.....

Story is that she was unhappy that her refund was no longer in the thousands, but was only a few hundred....

I went through the entire return with her ( at the time ) and explained her total refund was due to over paying to the federal government. She no longer had any credits ( unless she had another kid ) etc.

Then I get the following circle jerk.......

Her: Why can I not claim Head of Household? I am the only one working. ( Husband retired )
Me: You are married and HOH is for single people with dependents.
Her: Well, my friend does it and she is married!
Me: That is unlawful and she will get audited at some point and have to pay the money back.
Her: Okay..... why is my refund so low. I need more money?
Me: I proceeded to explain once more that she no longer had the credits to get a big refund.....
Her: Okay..... why can't I claim HOH? My friend does it....
Me: I explain why once again...
Her: But I need more money! Why can I not get a bigger refund?

Rinse and repeat for about 30 minutes......

Make a game of it. Obliquely insult her for your own enjoyment. Ramp it up until it becomes glaringly obvious what you're doing. Some people are too dumb to ever "get it".
Those just barely smart enough to finally realize you are "dissing" them will look like you slapped them when the realization hits.

Try it! They might fire you. :)

DH watches the "reality" show about that Pawn Shop in Detroit. I think the Dad's name is Les.

This woman sounds like a much more polite version of their customers...GIVE ME MY MONEY... when told what their cheap crud is worth and what Les will pay for it.

I think the Daughter, Ashley really likes arguing with them. Maybe you could get her to stand in for you when you get one of those doozies.

I consider myself average, but I really wonder about those who are on the low side. How do they survive?

My theory is that "THEY" survive because we no longer allow Lions, Tigers, and Bears to roam freely among us. Back in the primordial fog of time, when Ogg went to pet the SABER TOOTHED KITTY.....he got eaten!! That took the STUPID right out of the gene pool. Now a days we cage or kill off the toothy critters and protect the idiots.....and they are allowed to breed, making more idiots.

The movie IDIOCRACY pretty much explains it accurately.

I've done taxes for an H&R type company. I understand what you are dealing with. It is hard for some people to believe that the reason they get a refund is often because they have too much withheld. I quit explaining to them about changing their withholding so they can get their own money year round. Many are conditioned to getting that big chunk of cash once a year. We offered refund anticipation loans too. This was back when they first came out. They were a horrible deal as far as fees and interest went for the customer. Nearly 90% of our customers wanted the loan so they could get their money in 2-3 days instead of a few weeks. They would do anything to get that money ASAP. I never had a single client read the terms explaining how bad the cost of that very short term loan would be. They just signed away. It wasn't even in fine print.

I run into this from time to time.

"The world isn't what I want, it's not fair to ME and it's all your fault."

Sound familiar?
yes. I live with that every day.

The person involved learned it from (their, to protect the identity of) parents.

To this day, the mother is a "poor, pitiful me" who manipulates others by saying, piteously, when she wants something, "I don't want to be a burden."

Yes, you do. And yes, you are.

She doesn't respect you or she wouldn't keep trying to get a different answer and she thinks she can brow beat you into doing things her way. I'd tell her if she wasn't confident in my work, she should probably try someone else but that is just me. My accountant would tell me to take a hike if I tried that with her and then I'd cry lol.

And that is the very best description of evolution and natural selection.

I am shocked some days that some people own a house, drive new cars, go on exotic vacations, and THAT is their level of financial literacy.

We deal with a financially challenged person like that at least once a week.

The last one was a 50ish yo woman who called to complain that her bank charged her an overdraft fee for a NSF check she wrote us. She said I should call them to reverse it because.........

"You said you take checks!!!"

I had to explain that yes, we do, but we don't know what she has in her checking account, that is her responsibility.

"But you take checks!! That's false advertising!!"

Ma'am, I'm afraid that because we DO take checks is precisely why this happened. It further confused her when I told her she still owes us that money.

Ugh.

She's gonna turn us into the Better Business Bureau.

I'm just shaking in my boots.

And just for the additional head scratcher...... she came in with a new Cadillac that still had temporary tags on it.

How does a person get to this point in their life and not understand what a bounced check is?!?

Well, of course, there are different answers for the various types of people…

Some are willfully ignorant and don’t want to understand…

But then there is also a difference between intelligence and being wily and street smart.

Some people are illiterate and have poor skills in standard language communication and yet run complex scams…some also run multimillion dollar drug empires…

Street smarts and crafty doesn’t equal what we would call a standard education nor the ability to navigate civilized society…but boy they can run a con like they were born to it…because they were!

I have not had a refund in over 25 years. They are not getting to hold my money. Always owe a slight amount. It's called planning - some folks - well you cannot fix stupid!
