This didn't age well. A few days prior Lowell supposedly posed no threat to the islands. The concern is it will take a turn and slam into the islands like Iniki.

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hurricane Lowell has quickly grown stronger and is now a Category 5 hurricane, according to the 11:00 a.m. advisory issued Wednesday, September 2, by the National Weather Service Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu.
At the time of the advisory, Lowell was about 445 miles south of Hilo, Hawaiʻi, at 13.3°N, 154.3°W.
The storm was moving west at about 10 mph. Forecasters expected Lowell to keep moving west but said the storm would slowly lose some of its forward speed over the next few days.
Lowell’s maximum sustained winds had increased to 160 mph, with even stronger wind gusts. Its estimated minimum central pressure was 927 millibars.
The strongest winds were found close to the center of the storm. Hurricane-force winds reached up to 35 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds reached up to 90 miles from the center.
For Hawaiʻi, the advisory’s main concern is the ocean. Swells created by Lowell were spreading north and were expected to affect parts of the Hawaiian Islands over the next several days.
NWS warned that these swells could create life-threatening surf and rip currents. Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can pull people away from shore.
At the time of the NWS advisory, no coastal watches or warnings were in effect.
The advisory also said that Lowell is expected to remain a major hurricane for the next several days.
For now, Lowell is still far south of Hawaiʻi and is moving westward.

Locals are getting ready to hunker down. Emergency supplies are flying off the shelves. Would not want to be at an Oahu Costco today. Before we left we saw ditches in low lying areas getting cleared. Banks on a North Shore storm run off stream was getting reinforced. The term: stable ground in Hawaii is a relative term. LaLa was wake up call.

Hurricane Lowell currently is cat 4, Karina cat 3 and Marie cat 1. There's some advantages to being back on the mainland.
There are still trees and branches down from Lala that haven't been cleaned up yet. Hawaii isn't all Skittles and rainbows.

This line of hurricanes headed toward the islands is an anomaly. Usually there's a pressure system hanging near the islands that redirects them. Iniki was an exception. This may be related to the strong El Nino.
It looks like Lowell will mostly go west of the islands.

Just talked to local. Expected to make landfall Ni'ihau in two to three hours also seriously effecting Oahu and Kawa'i. Cat 4. Flooding expected. Visibility current on Oahu is next to nothing because of wind and heavy rains. Fear is it will hang out stalled in the neighborhood till Thursday.
A few prayers sent their way wouldn't hurt.

Most definitely prayers. I hope they’ve locked Pearl Harbor down as well as all of the ships and ship/museums. And I hope the surfers know when to quit and get off the water.
