…… How to get lid opened on a gangbox

Ok, so I bought a gangbox at HD like the one below and as you know, it has two cut out slots for padlocks. They provide 2 padlock holders that go inside the cutout slots that you see facing you. Then you place the padlock inside of the slots close the lid and push in the padlocks and its locked. Where I think I messed up at was when I was installing the padlock holders and I think I snugged the nuts down too much so when the lid closes it latches, but it will not unlatch. Even with the padlocks unlocked. So what I have is that latch to the lid is latched on to the padlock holder without the padlock locked and I have no way of opening the lid. Is there anyway to get this fixed without tearing the lid off. BTW, it only latches on one. The other latch opens fine. Thanks for any help. This is brand new so I really hope something can be done about it.

Call the customer service number and ask for help.
There is a non-zero chance that they will be happy to tell you how to correct the problem, possibly even in English.

I dunno.
Maybe spray some lubricant in the key slot
grab the head of the key with vice grips
insert key (while holding with vise grips)
turn the key so that it engages the lock cylinder (and won't pull out)
then pull the key to disengage the lock as far as possible

other than that, take it to the service desk at THD and get it exchanged

If’n you caint fix it with a big enough hammer, it’s an electrical problem.
But, don’t count on being able to return it after using said hammer...

I kinda don't get the concept of the box. Great, you can lock it.
But most of the guys I know would see it locked and think something valuable was in it
and then put the thing on a two wheeler, load it in the back of the truck, take it home
and play with it, a case of beer, some tannerite, and a .30-06
now that's some fun right there

I can see your point but, think more of it being locked up, at least inside a fenced area, if not out of the weather. It doesn’t take a locksmith to figure out, Locks are to keep mostly honest people mostly honest.

Yea, I get that. I had a front door that the frame got rotted out so I replaced it with this nice glass door with a big ole star in the middle and glass sidelights. Cost three grand. Daughter complained that I never locked the door.
I told her "there aint nothing in the house that costs more than that door - leave it unlocked"

If its movable I would try tipping it on its side(hard) and see if it dislodges the latch

Press down on the side that is stuck as you turn the key or operate the latch...might give enough to let it open.

Get a very thin and strong flat bit of metal, a small pry bar, that will fit above the lock and slide in. Put the key in and turn it so that you can pull out on the lock slightly. While doing that push in with the metal that is in above the lock. You are pushing against the latch that comes down, moving it just enough to clear the lock. With your third hand, or helper, lift the lid only after you have done the first two. If you lift it earlier it will defeat what you are trying to do.
