How do I get water out of my well without electricity?

ShurFlo and others sell DC pumps that will work to 200 feet and run off of battery, solar, and wind. Check with websites that sell solar PV items. I have also seen plans for a PVC pipe pump made from schedule 40 PVC and other plumbing parts. The pump part stays at the bottom and is in 2 inch PVC and the line going up is one inch PVC. It uses two one way flap valves to do the work and a long poly rope to pull the piston up (a spring and gravity take it back down). I have three DC pumps for backup, one solar one 48V DC (expensive, but meant for constant use), and two portable ones that I can drop down a well and hook to a car battery or solar (12V and 24V DC).

Thanks for the other idea Hitssquad. I thought that those were only for shallow wells (around 35-50 feet max).

Galvanized Well Bucket

Get water from any well by hand

Our well buckets work at any depth. Special leak-proof valve opens to fill then closes automatically when bucket is drawn up. Use for emergencies, temporary installations or when the expense of a pump can't be justified. Galvanized steel with watertight, soldered seams. Reinforced with 16-gauge crossbar and extra-strong bottom. You may have to remove any installed submersible pump before using a well bucket. Holds 1.9 gallons, fits wells down to 4"ID, 2" welded ring for rope, 3½"ODx52"L, 4 lb.
Locally made by the Amish.

bart beat me to it. you CAN make a homemade version. get a long piece of PVC pipe slightly smaller in diameter than your well pipe. cap the bottom and drill a hole in the cap, then secure a piece of leather or rubber over the hole (on the inside) with a wood screw on one side (so the flap can lift on one side, but will seal the hole. finally, drill a couple of holes in the top end and run a rope through them, then weight the pipe a bit so it'll sink. to use, drop it down the pipe (capped end down), let it fill with water and lift it out.

I'd go with the hand bailing type like the one Bart posted. They also make them in PVC, and in a pinch, you could make one yourself out of PVC or similar materials. There's not much to them: Just a length of pipe with a haul rope attached to it and a flapper or disc to cover the hole in the bottom of it. It DOES take a little practice to be able to draw a full bucket, though. A helpful thing would be a small pulley mounted above your well casing through which you'd run the haul rope so it'd be easier to haul up.

Oh yeah, you have to pull your submersible pump first.

Given your suspicions about your pond, I hope you have run a battery of tests on your well water.

I was thinking along the same line. But! I was gonna say marry a hooker who can suck a golf ball through 100 foot of garden house, then put her to work.

Another solution:

You can get an inverter and batteries to drive the AC well pump. I have a Trace inverter (salavge) that does this, and it works fine. I have tested it, and my batteries are good for about 4 hous of pumping (which is a long time if you are careful).

If I added solar or wind power to charge the batteries, I think I'd be able to disconnect the charger from the AC, and be independant of power as far as water goes. Since I am on a septic system, I'd have no worries there either.

It ain't cheap, but it's cheaper than a new DC well pump.

YMMV

Just ordered one!

Woo Hoo!

Thanks a million!!!

We have one like that for our well ~ make sure you have enough rope too ~ and if you need to use it put something over the casing (if concrete) so your rope won't wear.

. . . .
For the well bucket, if you make one out of PVC, they make a PVC check valve that can be used on the bottom instead of improvising a 'flap'

The only issue I see with these solutions is that most will only pul water about 25 ft or so.

THen you need an injector pump or a submersible.

google , simple pump, that is the name of a pump, that goes right down your well casing. IT will work for wells, up to 200 feet deep, and you don't have to take out your electric one. and it works just like any other electric pump.
