This recipe calls for brown rice but since brown rice doesn't store well I tried it with white rice and it worked for us soooo I have assembled the dry ingredients and vac sealed 5 batches so far.

  • 3/4 cup dry lentils
  • 3/4 cup brown rice
  • 4 chicken bouillon cubes
  • 2 tablespoons dry onion
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon basil
  • 4 cups tap water
  • 2 tablespoons oil or other fat
In a 2-quart saucepan bring the water and oil to a boil. As the water is heating, add the lentils, rice, bouillon, and seasonings. Bring the whole thing to a nice fat boil. Reduce the heat to low. Place a lid on the lentils and allow the mixture to simmer for about 45 to 50 minutes. The water should be mostly absorbed. You may serve this as it, or topped with a little cheddar cheese if desired.

Thanks! Been looking to change things up with lentils. And I am definitely looking for food storage options for them.

I love lentil soup!
I use diced ham or sausage, a chicken broth base and chopped onion.
Bacon also works, but when doesn’t bacon work lol?
Season with salt, pepper.

(I sauté the onion down first because I don’t like raw onions)

It’s fast, cheap, delicious and very healthy. Within less than 90 minutes on low simmer you’ve got some great soup :)

I was going to make lentils today…… maybe I’ll try this. I love lentils they are high in iron and I’m always slightly anemic. I bought some black lentils I wanted to try, I normally only cook with the generic brown ones

This sounds delicious! I'm wondering what kind of meat would be best served with this? I'm going to make this recipe, and serve as a side dish.
