Update: Wednesday 9:08 p.m. — East Alabama Medical Center said it has nine people hospitalized with COVID-19. One of them is from a nursing home, according to the hospital. There are also 25 additional people who are currently hospitalized with suspected COVID-19 as of Wednesday afternoon, according to EAMC.

Seven people are hospitalized at East Alabama Medical Center because they have confirmed cases of COVID-19, and one came from a nursing home, the hospital announced on Tuesday evening.

There are also, however, 27 people currently hospitalized with suspected COVID-19, according to EAMC.
One patient who was hospitalized with COVID-19 has been discharged.
“Like other hospitals, we have surge capacity contingency plans that have to be considered during times like these,” said Laura Grill, CEO of EAMC. “As such, we have made some changes to where we care for certain patient types so as to separate our non-COVID patients from our confirmed or suspected COVID patients.”

As of Tuesday night, there were 26 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lee County, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health. EAMC said it has submitted over 700 collection kits. A total of 416 tests came back negative as of Monday afternoon, while 252 tests were still awaiting results.

“At this time, Lee County has the third highest number of confirmed cases in the state,” Grill said. “That makes us somewhat of a hot spot for Alabama and so we are working very closely with the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Alabama Hospital Association to monitor our situation.”

The age range for the patients who have tested positive at EAMC is between 20 and 82; health-wise, the patients have ranged from having mild symptoms to severe, the hospital said.

Ricardo Maldonado, infectious diseases specialist and lead expert on EAMC’s COVID-19 response team, urged residents to do their part and stay home.

"An unprecedented crisis made landfall last week in our community," Maldonado said. "The situation will likely worsen in the next few days."

My daughter called me yesterday.

Our NE/central AL area (three counties) had supposedly had zero cases although we all knew there had to be. I guess results finally came back:
as of Tues night
Her county 1
my county 3
and the county between and connecting ours has 34 (ETA: seems that maybe it should have been 3, not 34 unless it includes those that tests aren't back on or something??). Nuts. ETA: I can't find where she got the 34 number for the county next to me. I just found a map from yesterday and it only shows 3 in that county.

My grandson got sick with something in mid-January. Doc said he would bet his medical degree that it was flu, yet all the test results came back negative. Then I got sick and my daughter got sick. Then, I got sick again in March after having to take my grandson to early morning day surgery at the hospital.

ETA: and she told me Alabama had their first death yesterday in Jackson County.

A 78-year-old man from Lauderdale County became the state's second death victim of the novel coronavirus COVID-19, according to media reports and social media posts from his family.

The Times Daily reported on Wednesday that Albert Johnson Trousdale of Elgin was diagnosed with COVID-19 and on Thursday, reported that he had died from the disease.

"Johnson went to join Nicky in Heaven this morning. He will be missed by so many people. Please pray for Nancy, Julie, Matt and Nicole. Details of Funeral Arrangements will be announced at a later time," a post on the Albert Trousdale's Recovery and Updates Facebook page stated on Thursday morning.

Lauderdale County has seven confirmed cases of COVID-19, as of Thursday afternoon. As a state, Alabama has 472, with 47 of the state's 67 counties having a confirmed case.

The first coronavirus death was confirmed by Gov. Kay Ivey Wednesday evening, out of Jackson County.

this morning, Alabama started with 538, then 540, then 567
deaths are now three (not in my county)
I guess it has been here a good long time.

but I figure I'll be ok . . . for 14 days at least . . . LOL
(pretty sure one of those lives across the street - he got back from Italy, Spain, France last week, had taken a test, and was quarantined for 14 days - and outside mowing his grass)

no doubt that it would have gotten there anyway - though I can't help but wonder how much of this can be attributed to the proximity of the redneck riviera and spring breakers who paid no attention to the DO NOT GO warnings . . .

Gov. Ivey closes nonessential businesses across state

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVY) -- Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has ordered all non-essential businesses in the state closed due to increased coronavirus cases. However, she did not issue a shelter in place order that would have prohibited all non-essential travel.

Ivey, in a news briefing, talked about prior restrictions including the closure of restaurant in-dining but admitted those measures have not stymied the spread of the novel coronavirus.

These “non-essential” businesses and activities will fall into one of four broad categories:
1. Entertainment venues
2. Athletic facilities and activities
3. Non-essential "close-contact" service establishments
4. Non-essential retail stores

Places where people interact and touch, including businesses like nail salons, day spas, barbershops, fitness centers, bowling alleys, concert venues, theaters, museums, indoor children play areas, casinos, hair salons, tanning salons, home furnishing stores, sporting good stores, and more are included in the order.

Essentially, the order blankets most retail, entertainment, and sporting venues, including gyms. Previously released health orders also apply to restaurants and bars. Gun stores can remain open. Ivey said if the business is not on the list, it’s not included in the new order.

Supermarkets, banks, medical facilities, and other essential businesses will remain open.

State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris said the closures will be in effect from Saturday, March 28 at 5 p.m. through April 17 at 5 p.m.

As of Friday morning, there have been 540 confirmed cases of in the state out of more than 4,000 tests given. Three people have died, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Has No Life - Lives on TB
Hmm... let's see. I had to work the day after Ivey closed the schools. My work location was 1 1/2 hours away. The roads had never been so crowded before. I was scheduled to work a library. I will continue to be grateful that at least some folks stayed away. (That library is normally packed to the limit.) The next day, yes I was still scheduled, there were people but they were being a lot more careful about not getting close.
I have been all over 3 counties since December. No clue where it was and where it came from but if the count is anything to go by, it landed in Birmingham first. Then it went to Lee County (Auburn) and Huntsville (Redstone).
My son and I's doctor office was ready that Monday to test. There was no delay. The biggest delay is in getting results.

720 confirmed
4755* tested to date
3 dead (per the obviously very delayed death numbers) so, add minimum 5 dead from tonight and most likely another one for reported death#4 reported a few days ago that went away or was just not added in yet......

I love how the confirmed cases are going up but not the number tested. Makes you wonder about the tests.

A Huntsville Doctor was on news the other night.

He said he knows the confirmed numbers are being kept updated and he feels they are accurate with the number of "confirmed covid-19" results that have actually been received back.

He also said that because some of the testing agencies are taking a really long time to provide/get the results that the Huntsville group of 11? hospitals is having some come back and retest and those are being sent to a Birmingham? site that is providing results a lot quicker.

The deaths are lagging because someone? agency? state? decided that some or all deaths have to be reviewed by someone other than the county coroner that declared the cause of death as covid-19. (seems to me, and to the doc, that they are trying to curb/fudge the numbers by making an underlying or preexisting condition the "official" cause of death. He specifically mentioned the 5 nursing home deaths that were reported in one day)

The doc also said that he wan't sure if the "total test" numbers were accurate because he is not sure if the all of the negative result numbers are being reported or included in the total test numbers.

ETA: he also said that North Alabama area hospitals have conducted over 3,000 tests just among the group of hospitals, so he seemed to think that the "total tested" number is not accurate and maybe it will go up again once they get more results or something. Otherwise, the number tested seems low for the rest of the state to have conducted if Huntsville area tested over 3000 people.

Absolutely. These "safer at home" orders will not stop this. Simulations done a decade ago for the mandator pandemic plans all states were required to have proved this. It also proved that no vaccine would be available for quite some time (if at all) and would only be given to essential workers on the first go around.

This is one of the only pandemics that I can recall where young, healthy adults were not the primary demographic under the CFR attack. Why we are not using that fact to protect people who cannot is beyond me. Unless it is stupidity and selfishness.

on Friday, you reported the 4th death.
today, the website reported the 4th death.
one can infer that the website is 2 days behind - for whatever the reason.
one can also infer that the number of cases is behind.
