WEATHER Hawaii - more rain we don't need

Kona winds are bringing more rain we really, really don't need. The ground is saturated. Land/mud slides are becoming a common hazard, some slides effecting traffic. Roads haven't been fully repaired from prior storm damage in some areas.

A reservoir dam overflowed in the last flood. Luckily the dam held.

Debris cleaned off North Shore beaches is currently being stored in tractor trailer containers at a local park. It sinks.

With more crap expected to be washed into the ocean who knows when or if it'll be safe to swim again

Shelters are open for those expected to be flooded out of their homes in low lying areas. Some business and homes have just gotten the mud and muck from the last two floods cleared and now there's a new one on the horizon. It's a mess and expected to get worse.

Did I mention Kilauea volcano is oozing lava? An eruption is expected.

Apparently the volcano is inflating for a blow. Don’t know what to say other prayers you stay safe.
Always liked Hawaii but no matter how or what you do your still on an Island.
Might want to listen to Jimmy Buffet about where to go when the volcano blows.

Thanks for the prayers Bubble Head and fi103r.

So Kilauea is putting on a show for the tourists. Surprisingly it's not raining. DH says I ruined a perfectly good rainy weekend by putting the traditional pot of emergency water on the stove and scaring off the storm. It's Thursday.

DH just showed me the weather radar for Oahu. The island is currently ringed by storms but it's not raining here. Who says prayers don't work? Can't prove it by me.

The area that burned out not to long ago, is it not washing out a bit? Or was there time for vegetation and terraced good?

Idiots in government imported invasive plants to stabilize hillsides and control erosion and some just because they're idiots.

The results is during droughts the place becomes a tinder box in places and periodically burns. Hot. Trying to fight wild fires in narrow Hawaiian canyons is suicidal so mostly they let it burn. This is something to think about when realizing the amount of US military on the island and the bunkers storing ammunition, etc. and hope it's all fire proof.

Still no rain here. Did you prayer warriors manage to get the Boss's undivided attention?

Include link of volcanic eruption just because it's getting impressive.

The rain finally started last night and has increased from an initial drizzle to stead rain, not frog drowning (at least not yet) but hard and steady. The power's still on and we haven't gotten a boil water before drinking warning. That posted I think putting some boiled water in thermoses might not be a bad idea.

Thank you for the prayers.

Hopefully by then this will have passed. The rainy season should be over by May. Still if they don't intend to spend the entire stay in the hotel room, they should have some rainy day plans. Suggesting the Bishop Museum, the ʻIolani Palace - need to get tickets/reservations in advance and HOMA (Honolulu Museum of Art) excellent brunch.

Flash flood warnings have been issued. The rain has let up for the time being but the sky doesn't look like this is over.

Looks like the rain hit the lava and the crater's turned into a pool of steam. The eruption may be over but it's hard to tell from the video.

OGM, I’m praying you’ll be safe from flooding. Is your home in a low-lying area?

We're not in a low lying area or that close to the coast. Close to the coast being relative when you live on an island roughly the size of the mainland county we used to live in.

It's overcast. The rain has stopped for now. There's a flash flood warning in effect till Monday but I'm hoping the worst is over.

Thank you all for your prayers. I'm hoping this is the last hurrah of the rainy season.

WAIMEA BAY (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay will remain closed through Saturday after two large boulders fell from a slope above the road, state officials said.

The rockfall occurred at around 1:30 p.m. Friday as stormy weather battered Oahu with periods of heavy rain prompting flooding concerns and additional road hazards across the island.

The highway was completely closed as crews began slope assessments and mitigation work to determine whether additional rockfall is possible.

“We have crews up in the mountain now,” state Transportation Director Ed Sniffen told Hawaii News Now Friday evening. “They’re clearing out all that debris and material that could come down.”

The Hawaii Department of Transportation said the full closure will remain in place overnight and no one will be allowed on the highway while work is underway.

Sniffen said he expected the highway to reopen at around 1 or 2 p.m. Saturday.

“When we do open it up, it’ll probably be just one lane for now because as we’ve seen before (in) the last kona low, we saw rockfalls after the storms had occurred,” said Sniffen.
