Has anyone heard of an "onion sandwich"? I didn’t until today...

The thought turns my stomach! But yeah, my dad/stepdad would eat one on occasion and I know most people in that generation DID eat onion sandwiches.

My birth father told stories of how my grandpa was so poor growing up, (family of six kids) that many days all they had to eat were lard sandwiches.

Yes, heard about them from my DM. She was born in 1922 in Philly, passed away decades ago. She used to tell us that she was sent to live with her GM on a farm in rural PA for a while during the Depression, and that for a time that was about all they had to eat - onion sandwiches.

Yes my mother eat lard sandwiches. But thought it wasn't healthy, so she often feed us milk toast, milk and rice, cream of wheat, oats, onion sandwiches etc.. when times where tight. But we did supplement with wild game, why it's such a treat even to today.

Just had a cold venison sandwich with extra horseradish and onion. Delicious!

Growing up on my grandparent's farm here in Mississippi, Granny would get up every morning and make a huge pan of biscuits. She made so many, because she wanted to have some left for lunch. We would take those biscuits, open them up, slather with mayo and a big slice of onion, and that was our onion sandwiches for lunch.

When I first got together with my wife, we'd sit with her uncle and eat a sandwich of just two slices of red onion with a raw hamburger patty in between 'em. Those were the days when you knew what the meat was like 'cause you'd just come home with it from the local butcher, after you watched him grind it right in front of you.

Ok, I’ll toss out the one my younger brothers and I made up. Very poor, big farm family and we were very hungry a lot growing up….but hunger makes many otherwise despised food very palatable (I’m looking at you, Black-eyed Peas)!

Bread spread with peanut butter, topped with a good smear of French’s mustard….things which we almost always had on hand. Good on a cracker, too. If I still ate starches, I’d make one now :)

Never heard of it...

But my dad was very fond of liver sausage sandwiches on rye bread, with lots and lots of raw onion. He used to call the onion "Wild Irish Rose".
+1

Nothing better than adding a thick slice of onion and a little horseradish or spicy brown mustard to a liver sausage sandwich.

I used to love those when I was out waterfowl hunting.

They were very comforting when the wind, rain and sleet was blowing.

Add a thermos of hot coffee and you were good to go no matter what.

I was talking to my 82 y/o Mom earlier today (I'm 60) and she was telling me she had an onion sandwich for lunch. I had never heard of this before... it consists of sliced onion, mayonnaise, salt and pepper on bread... I tried it and it was DELICIOUS! I was shocked. Anyway, just curious how many of y'all have tried it... I'm from Alabama (she still lives there) but live in Texas, yet never heard of it before today... hahahahaha
As long as it is a non GMO Vidalia! Yumm.

Hmm, interesting....What type of onion (sweet, yellow, etc)?
I'm partial to the nice, big red torpedo onions, but havin' lived in NorCal we always had a choice of most varieties.
Bein' as how our neighborhood had lots of first and second generation Italians and two great "Dago Delis" as even the locals called 'em, you didn't have to settle for just white bread, honkie food. :D

Don't recall if Mom ate onion sandwiched, but she did eat raw onions (like I would eat and apple). She also liked spoonfuls of horseradish from the jar.

I could never handle that, but I like coleslaw sandwiches. Buttering the bread is the key to a tasty sandwich.

My Mom originally hailed from Illinois. Her favorite sandwich was sliced tomato and onion with Miracle Whip. Until the doc told her it was no wonder she had reflux issues.

Ate onion sandwiches as a young guy. Haven't had any in years. Stomach can't take just an onion and bread. However, I do love raw onion on a burger. As an aside, when I was very young, my mom would put fried onions on my chest for a cold with a cloth over top. I used to sneak the onions off and eat some of them. Love fried onions as well.

hold up.. so the onions on the chest trick works with cooked onions?? mom always used raw onions and then you smell like onions forever afterwards. I would have rather had the cold lol

I had several family members that ate onion sandwiches when I was a kid. I didn't care for them even though I liked onion.

I haven't been able to eat onions for about ten years now. They totally screw up my digestive system. I miss eating them on burgers and grilled on chopped steak.

I grew up in Arkansas and onion sandwiches were very common and popular. I love them.
My grandfather and his sisters ate wedges of raw apples and onions together every evening with supper and they all lived to be close to 100 yrs. One of his sisters lived to be, I believe, 107.

a local mennonite grows red onions

I have described them as.. able to be eaten like an apple.

they are delicious and mild.

vidalia onions would be a great sammich.

never those yellow onions from the store (they are too hot)
Ooo. One of my great aunts was known to eat an onion like an apple.

Meanwhile, I remember my mom doing the onion and peanut butter thing. That grossed me out because I don’t really like peanut butter.

But now? I am in my great aunt’s area. I LOVE onions or garlic. Sadly, hubby is not in the same camp and tells me I stink. Have it your way big boy. I will (hopefully) never stop eating that!!
