Has anyone heard of an "onion sandwich"? I didn’t until today...

Deus vult...
I was talking to my 82 y/o Mom earlier today (I'm 60) and she was telling me she had an onion sandwich for lunch. I had never heard of this before... it consists of sliced onion, mayonnaise, salt and pepper on bread... I tried it and it was DELICIOUS! I was shocked. Anyway, just curious how many of y'all have tried it... I'm from Alabama (she still lives there) but live in Texas, yet never heard of it before today... hahahahaha

My in laws were Ukrainian, and they primarily ate an old world diet, which could vary from out of this world delicious to retching at the table unpalatable. My father in law used to take red onions to work which he ate like an apple, and he loved to do this during meetings, just to freak people out.

Born and raised in Florida and used to have friends who grew those sweet Florida onions and would give me some…soon as he did, I’d be eating them with mayo and white wonder bread!

We got a call one day whilst I was on duty and I had just had a big onion sammich with Doritos….

The patient was DOA. So while I was speaking with the decedent’s wife, a really nice old lady, she kept saying in between giving me medical info in her husband…

”Does anyone else smell onions! I could swear I smell onions!“

Finally one of the other FF/Paramedics said,

“Uh, yes ma’am, I’m sorry, it’s my partner here” (pointing at me!)

Here she was crying and my breath had flames!

But, by the time we cleared the scene, she and I were heavily involved in speaking of our love for onion sandwiches…she even chuckled and pointed at her deceased husband and said, “oh, he loved them too!”

Told my partner on our way back to the station,

”Listen son! Did you see that! You tried to embarrass me, and all it did was cause this sweet old lady to have fond memories of her husband!” ;)

I like sharp cheddar or aged white with a slice of red or white onion on whole wheat;
really good if the onion is drenched w/ white vinegar 1st.

When I stayed at my grandparents small farm and I wanted a snack, I'd pull a yellow onion and slice some Italian bread. Definitly salt and butter, ocassionally added thin slices of garlic for variety.

Having a prodigiious appetite as a teen, I found my grandparents cupboards lacking for snack / junk foods. So, on occasions, I did find myself enjoying an onion as one would an apple. At the time I thouught it might also help with the skeeters.

Well, I think I would because the hot temp. would soften and sweeten them even more. Otoh, if you want more crunch add some pecans or other softer nut.

What about the bread? Sourdough, white and wheat all have different flavors and textures.
I should add that things occasionally come to me from work, so I have wedges of Brie and Camembert siting in the fridge doing nothing.

My grandmother lived with us through most of my growing up years and she ate most anything on a fold over sandwich, even her dessert. Back in the day, it wasn't uncommon to fry up a small skillet of potatoes and eat them on a fold over sandwich if that was all you had or just what you wanted...now I'm craving fried potatoes lol. I'm from Arkansas.

Yes on the onion sandwich.

Cracker sandwich too. Saltines and mustard between bread.

My GM ate lard & brown sugar sandwiches as a child.

While enjoyable to some, they're all rooted in austere settings.

A friend called them all "wish sandwiches".
You wish you had a piece of meat on it.

Eta: pinto beans on a biscuit is another one.

My late Father would eat them on occasion; white bread, mayo, large onion slice, with salt and pepper. Dad explained that they became popular during the Great Depression because the sandwiches were both very filling and very inexpensive.

I tried them a couple of times and while they weren't quite my cup o' tea, they were much better than I thought they'd be. I'd certainly be willing to eat them without complaint if money was tight and that's all we could afford.

I have described them as.. able to be eaten like an apple.

they are delicious and mild.

vidalia onions would be a great sammich.
