LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry and his wife Meghan arrived in the United Kingdom on Wednesday, as they make a fresh start in Britain after six years in the United States, U.K. media reported.

The news comes less than a week after the couple surprised fans and critics alike with plans to return to Britain. Their arrival was reported by news organizations including the BBC and the Daily Telegraph, with the newspaper reporting that their plane landed at Birmingham International Airport around noon.

Flight tracking websites showed a private charter flight from Van Nuys, California, arrived at the airport at 11:56 a.m.

The couple’s children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, have already enrolled at British schools and will start classes in September. The family plans to live at a private, nonroyal residence outside of London, but haven’t said exactly where that will be.

Prince Harry’s representative declined to comment.

Harry and Meghan gave up their royal duties and moved to California more than six years ago, saying they wanted to earn their own living. They later signed lucrative contracts with Netflix and Spotify.

Relations with the rest of the royal family quickly soured as the couple said palace staff had been insensitive to Meghan’s mental health and leveled charges of racism and media manipulation at members of the royal family.

Tensions between Harry and King Charles III, his 77-year-old father, appear to have eased in recent months, but relations with Prince William, the heir to the throne, remain tense. Charles is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer that was discovered in 2024.

Harry said last year that he wanted to reconcile with his family and that he didn’t know “how much time my father has left.” He has also expressed a desire for his children to have a chance to get to know their grandfather.

Harry, Meghan and the children visited the king at his Highgrove Estate in western England last month while the prince was in the U.K. for a series of charity appearances. It was the first time Archie and Lilibet had seen their grandfather in person since 2022, when the family traveled to Britain for events marking the late Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne.

Charles wasn’t told about the couple’s impending move at the time and only found out about it last week.

King Charles III clarifies status of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, after their return to the UK

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III has reiterated that Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, remain non-working members of the royal family following their return to the United Kingdom.

A letter sent on behalf of the king to senior government officials said the couple will continue to refrain from using their royal titles as they have done since stepping back from official royal duties in 2020. Any charity work the couple undertakes will be carried out in a private capacity, and operational security decisions are matters for the relevant police agencies, the letter adds.

The letter was sent by the Lord Chamberlain, the most senior official in the royal household, to senior officials in the government and military, as well as lord lieutenants, the king’s personal representatives around the country.

“To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that (this) information be shared,” the letter says.

While the communication simply confirms that Harry and Meghan’s status remains unchanged, the decision to send the letter and release it publicly demonstrates the concern among some palace observers that the couple’s status could allow them to become a sort of parallel royal court, competing with working members of the royal family.

The security question is particularly sensitive because Harry has fought a long-running battle with the government for the restoration of publicly funded police protection, which was canceled when the couple gave up their royal roles.

The decision about whether to restore the couple’s round-the-clock police protection is a matter for a government panel known as RAVEC, or the Royal and VIP Executive Committee.

“Any specific questions from official and State organizations about the courtesies which should be extended to the Duke and Duchess, and particularly where recourse to public funds may be required, should be directed to Buckingham Palace,” the Lord Chamberlain said in his letter.

LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, were surprised by the way Buckingham Palace released a letter that made clear they remain non-working members of the royal family even though they have returned to the United Kingdom.

The letter, sent on behalf of King Charles III to senior government and military officials, caught the couple off guard when it was released to the media on Monday in part because they were given little time to review or comment on its contents, a person familiar with the discussions said.

The couple’s representatives received a copy of the letter just one hour and 12 minutes before it was released to news outlets, the person said. That left them with little time to respond because they were unable to reach Harry, who was in a meeting, until just two minutes before the letter was released, the person added.

The letter said Harry and Meghan would continue to refrain from using the formal royal titles, such as his royal highness and her royal highness, as they have done since stepping back from official royal duties in 2020. Any charity work the couple undertakes will be carried out in a private capacity, and operational security decisions are matters for the relevant police agencies, the letter said.

“To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that (this) information be shared,” the Lord Chamberlain, the most senior official in the royal household, said in the letter.

Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 when they moved to North America to make their own living through lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify. At the time, Queen Elizabeth II made clear that the couple could not be part-time royals and they had to give up their royal positions if they wanted to pursue such commercial arrangements. Charles reiterated that position after he became king in 2022.

The couple’s reaction to the letter, which confirms that their status remains unchanged, highlights tensions surrounding their return to the U.K. Some palace observers have expressed concern that Harry and Meghan’s presence in Britain could allow them to establish a sort of parallel royal court that would compete with working members of the royal family.

The security question is particularly sensitive because Harry has fought a long-running battle with the government for the restoration of publicly funded police protection, which was canceled when the couple gave up their royal roles.

Any decision about whether to restore the couple’s round-the-clock police protection is a matter for a government panel known as RAVEC, or the Royal and VIP Executive Committee. The committee is expected to meet this week, the person familiar with the discussions said.

"The letter, sent on behalf of King Charles III to senior government and military officials, caught the couple off guard when it was released to the media on Monday in part because they were given little time to review or comment on its contents, a person familiar with the discussions said."

Harry and his yacht girl didn't give the royal family any advance word of the stuff they said in the Oprah interview nor did they provide an advance copy of Harry's book before it went to print, nor advance notice of any of their competing publicity gambits timed in hopes of overshadowing planned royal family events.

Also, the letter just reiterated what they already knew. Everything in it was part of the Sandringham agreement that was made with the Queen when they left. They didn’t need to review it before it was sent, they had already agreed to all of it.

The grift was wearing thin in the U.S. Not that they have any more credibility across the pond. Plus, Harry's book-proclaimed drug use was getting to be a sticky issue in the U.S. - coming up against his legal visa status.

Harry has a lot of back peddling to do to get back to any kind of relationship with his brother. If he wants to try, he'd better do it while his dad is still alive. Charles probably told him so.

I'm of mixed feelings on security for Harry and the family. He is 5th in line for the throne. However when you decide to just go off to Ukraine and other places how much danger are you actually in? I don't know how to weigh actual danger with he wants presence, as in acting like a working royal when he isn't.

I am enjoying the unfounded accusations on YouTube that Archie's and Lilibet's DNA was secretly collected from dinner napkins while dining at HighGrove.

I just wish I had the opportunity to blow through all the money that Harry and Meghan handled in the last SIX years!

I don't know nuthin', but I think i read that her ex husband said she had a hysterectomy years ago. IF it was a complete hysterectomy (including ovaries), there is no possible way those kids are hers..unless she was looking so far ahead that she had eggs frozen in advance.

Just from observing the shenanigans the pair has pulled, I feel very sorry for him...

There have been reports that some of that money came from their 'charitable work' and was diverted to pay for luxuries including private jet travel, hotel suites, clothes and other costs of their 'appearances.'

I think by this point they have outstripped the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in terms of grifting, and the Windsors were friendly with Hitler back in the 1930s, and allegedly took German money during WWII. (Book to read for insight: Traitor King: The Scandalous Exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor by Andrew Lownie.)

Harry and Meghan “taken aback” by King’s letter clarifying their status as private citizens

September 9, 2026

Duke and Duchess of Sussex were reportedly unaware the correspondence would be made public, despite palace sources suggesting they had been informed in advance.

A royal clarification, six years in the making

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were caught off guard by a letter from King Charles III that formally clarified their position within the royal family, according to a spokesperson for the couple.

The statement said Harry and Meghan were “a little surprised that they were not warned about it in advance.”

However, the BBC, citing royal sources, reported that the couple had been aware of the letter before it became public.

What the letter actually says

The clarification was issued on September 7, as first reported by the Daily Mail. It came in the form of a letter from the Lord Chamberlain, Richard Benyon, sent to “senior interested parties” across government.

According to the newspaper, the letter states that the couple’s return to the UK after six years living in the United States does not alter their official standing. The correspondence reportedly says: “Their titles of His and Her Royal Highness remain suspended and are not used. Their position is no different from that of private individuals.”

A question of communication

The apparent discrepancy between the Sussexes’ account and that of palace insiders has reignited debate over how the couple are treated by the institution — and how much they are told, and when.

A spokesperson for the couple suggested they had not been given advance notice, while royal sources maintained that they had been informed before the letter was made public.

If this is true---and I read above that Harry is 5th in line to the throne--but if these are NOT her (and his) biological children, wouldn't that immediately disqualify their children from being counted at all in the royal bloodlines?

YouTube has numerous channels dealing with the royals. If you have 30 minutes to waste some of the videos are really good at telling about the inside dirt in the family. A friend of mine is from England and he says the royals are attention whores in the worst way.

They are so far down the line of succession, it really doesn't matter. But I think they are *his*...but she obviously didn't carry either of them. Almost certainly, they were IVF with a very well paid surrogate (for her silence, as well as the usual surrogacy fees).

You KNOW if MeAgain had actually gone through a pregnancy, there would have been multiple magazine articles and tabloid pics and stories about every minute of her sacrifice and struggle!

The photos they release of their children show two redheads, the daughter with longish straight hair. Allegedly they have blue eyes. It's pretty unlikely--not impossible--but unlikely that both kids only take after their father and don't have any of the features of their maternal grandmother or of their mother (who's had work done).

Not trying to justify Meghan but it's very possible. Her father is from Perry County, PA. A somewhat redneck area just west of the Susquehanna River, code for Scots Irish.

I happen to be Scots/ Scots Irish on both sides of my family. Origins in Western PA. Both of my parents and all four grandparents had brown hair and brown eyes.

I have five siblings. Four of the six of us had beautiful copper red hair. Not me. They had to go back 3 and 4 generations to find it.

Seems to be a pretty odd and useless statement. When was the last time any member of the royal family had a real job?

With respect, Jane, Grok told me it was unlikely both kids would get the recessive genes to create the combination--along with their very white skin tone--twice. Not impossible, just pretty unlikely: Meghan stated she is 43% Nigerian while visiting Africa.

(BTW, my family has the same color palette as yours. Lots of red hair.)

What, didn't you see the Twerkles doin the "baby dance" while she was in the hospital trying to give birth to Lili?
Her pregnancy pillow-er-baby bump, kept flopping up and down like it was gonna hit her in the chin.
And, if/since she did not give birth to either child, neither one is legally in the line of succession.

Their grandfather on Megan's side is also white, so there's a good chance (I think one in four or something like that) that both kids will look white. Now if they had 12 kids, like a family I knew in Venezuela, they could look like everything from blond-haired and blue-eyed to a Zulu Warrior (and I mean the last as a compliment). As well as my friend himself and his Uncle on his Dad's side, who looked like, as my Mom said, "As they came out of the Amazon, wearing loincloths and ready to boil and eat the missionaries."

That was the rather typical Venezuelan middle- and working-class mix of three major "races," or as my ex-boyfriend used to say:

"The Blood of Three Races runs in my veins. I am Spanish, I am Indian, and I am Black - it makes me strong"

He looked like a stereotypical "senor" but with reddish-brown hair, a mustache, and green eyes (but dusky skin - not black, just a permanent suntan.

Mixing races can get weird, and no place shows it better than Venezuela or Brazil. Interestingly enough, both Libya and Persia can be nearly as interesting, often in the same families.

I agree. But I wonder if the royal rules have caught up to modern science? What if she HAD given birth to them, but the eggs they came from were donated, and fertilized with Harry's sperm?

Are they going to DNA test every royal baby?

For that matter...I'm pretty convinced Harry isn't Charles biological son; IF true, and IF someone in the family royal household did a DNA test on him...well, that would explain a LOT about the attitudes and relationships.

And from the little bit of reading I've done over the years (I'm more interested in Queen Elizabeth's horses than the idiot people! ), some of the long term Courtiers and royal household employees (secretaries, personal assistants, equerries) are MUCH more traditional and hidebound about the old rules than the actual royals are. One of them could have easily obtained DNA from a toothbrush or personal item and sent it in under a pseudonym.

I said I feel sorry for Harry, and I do...he really appears to love Meagan, while she always looks like she's calculating the best angle for the photographer. But I REALLY feel bad for those two kids. They're neither fish nor fowl...not officially "royals", but by birth, supposedly much higher ranked than any of the peerage.

And I doubt Mommy Dearest is aware enough to get them the counseling that might help them cope.
