This brought back some very interesting memories. My first exposure to C's were in the spring of 68 during basic training (Korean War vintage) and I learned early on to try to get to the newly opened case as soon as one could. Most ate cold especially in VN. We had lrrp rations when I transferred from the line unit to the LRRP unit attached to our division. When I became a Team Leader I would not allow my team members to eat in our mess hall the day prior to a mission. Very unhandy to have someone with the 'scoots' in the field. We would eat half of our ration in the AM & second half at night in our RON position. The empty pouch with the tape to reclose provided a convenient disposal for personal spore (BM).

My first exposure to MRE's were in the NG in mid 80s. The dehydrated ones. I absolutely could not drink enough water to balance them in my digestive tract. I was home from AT for two weeks before I had a normal BM. C4 couldn't dislodge that mess.

Saved, to glorify God.
i think my kids threw out my 2 cases of MRE'S while I was in the hospital a couple
of years ago. They were only about 5 years old. I can't find them anywhere.

I always thought the regular food was good in the Army too. I was amazed that in Basic if you didn't like how your eggs were cooked you could tell the guy to start over. In every other aspect you were dirt, but you could order a cook around. Strange.

Then I got to Heidelberg, and we had all-you-can-eat buffet every meal. Not what I was expecting. Well prepared, never had an issue with it. For a growing boy, it was hog heaven.

And then of course you go downtown and have a few German beers or a nice Mosel wine. Ahhh.

.... all the chocolate milk you could drink.

When someone raids your food hoard just remember they will leave the MREs. ;)

Finally not a lurker!
Never known the crackers to last. Had a 20+ year old turkey entree. A little chemical tasting but to my surprise no ill effects. As far as outer packaging they've held up better than some of the storage food cans.

BW... serious question here...
How do you communicate from inside of a cave?
Do you only come out once a day?
Do you normally dig holes in the dirt for MRE's?

Yikes, probably from the eighties.

I had a bunch of those early MRE's back in the day. One was the dreaded cheese omelet better known as the "Vomlette". I remember the frankfurters being called the "Four Fingers of Death".

Also in those very dark brown bags was the rare Long Range Patrol ration which preceded the introduction of MRE's. LRP's had freeze dried entrees. I remember having a couple of spaghetti and meat sauce LRP's.

MRE = Meals Rejecting Excretion
ate all those you mentioned plus c rats in early 83
