The speaker of the Tennessee House has allegedly sanctioned a lawmaker over her refusal to recite the "Pledge of Allegiance," as is
customary at the start of each legislative session.

WATE-TV, an ABC affiliate, said House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh asked Rep. Henri Brooks to remain outside of the chamber if she didn't
want to recite the pledge to the U.S. flag.

Brooks, the station reported, complained that Naifeh's request violated her constitutional rights and in response she has contacted the
American Civil Liberties Union.

On Wednesday, the ACLU urged Naifeh in a letter to reconsider his request. Each session of the House and Senate always begin with a
prayer followed by the pledge, WATE said.

Naifeh said he was merely interested in maintaining the decorum of the House, and said he had not ordered Brooks outside the chamber.

Also, WATE said, Naifeh only approached Brooks about her actions after a group of visiting school children asked why she did not stand
up during the pledge.

Brooks, a black Democrat from Memphis, said she hasn't recited the pledge since the third grade because the American flag "represents a
nation of former slave owners to her," WATE reported.

Well, i for one am with this fellow. I won't say that pledge due to the one nation under god biz. That is so discriminatory against polytheists. And look at the history of the pledge itself. It has no relationship to the govt. Nor patriotism. It is merely a badly written attempt at instilling loyalty through rote (i.e. NLP, or neural linguistic programming). It does not work and causes real problems as it denies the reality of the USA as a plurality of peoples packed between two oceans, hated by the rest of the world, and saddled with an oppressive government dedicated to the usurption of power at any cost and using any weapons including monetary policy to manipulate mass behavior. You really want to pledge alligence to that?

Frankly, I think law-makers should be pledging allegiance on a regular basis to the citizens and Constitution of the United States.

Citizens shouldn’t be pledging allegiance to a flag or a governing body, as we were all taught to do. That separates the action from the intent.

We don’t follow flags, we adhere to principles.

Well, she is MORE than "free" to LEAVE her position of authority, and go back to "Affica". Just WHO the F**K does this pig represent, anyway? She should be immediately RECALLED.

Well duh,

Before we rewrite the history books completely, note that his country was born of Freedom of Religion not Freedom FROM Religion. Reading was taught so that the Bible could be read. DUH! I am so sick of people acting like America was based on anti-Christian values. "One nation UNDER GOD" not under slavery. Dennis, I feel your rage. All I hear really coming from this woman is Waaaaa... She needs some cheese with that wine.

I don't post often but this ultra-liberal- left babble is grating. Beside that, when God gets His fill, His Wrath will have 'em hiding under rocks and in caves begging to die.

Thomas Jefferson....

"God Who Gave Us Life Gave Us Liberty. Can The Liberties Of A Nation Be Secure When We Have Removed a Conviction That These Liberties Are the Gift Of God? Indeed I Tremble for My Country When I Reflect That God Is Just, That His Justice Cannot SLeep Forever. Nothing Is More Certainly Written In the Book Of Fate Than That These People Are To Be Free. Establish The Law For Educating The Common People. This It Is The Business Of The State To Effect And On A General Plan.

Almighty GOD Hath Created the Mind Free. All Attempts To Influence It By Temporal Punishments or Burthens... Are A Departure From The Plan Of the Holy Author Of OUR Religion.... No Man Shall Be Compelled To Frequent Or Support Any Religious Worship Or Ministry Or Shall Otherwise Suffer On Account Of His Religious Opinions Or Belief, But All Men Shall Be Free To Profess And By Argument To Maintain, Their Opinions In Matters Of Religion. I know But One Code Of Morality For Men Whether Acting Singly Or Collectively.

This goes Both Ways... We The People....
That Means Christians TOO!!!
The only folks that it is PC to bash are
Christians. And it's getting very very old.

If Old Glory "represents a nation of former slave owners to her," then what flag was it that was carried into battle against the "notorious" Confederate Flag which supposedly represented the South's resistance to giving up their slaves? I'm sure her ancestors were glad to see the Stars and Stripes coming to initiate their gradual move toward the privileges their descendants are beginning to acquire. It has been a long road for them and there is much progress to be made, but that progress is being made beneath the banner she so despises.

Ms. Brooks is making up stuff, but that doesn't mean the pledge is ok. The dictionary says:

"ALLEGIANCE 1.a the obligation of a feudal vassal to his liege lord. b.(1) the fidelity owed by a subject or citizen to a sovereign or government. b.(2) the obligation of an alien to the government under which the alien resides. 2. devotion or loyalty to a person or cause."

The last is the only one that might apply to a citizen. In this country citizens are sovereign, not the government, and certainly not the flag.

The pledge, as it is currently constructed, is a religious test, which is expressly forbidden in the main body of the United States Constitution. It is also unconstitutional for government to establish god belief in the legislature by means of requiring a pledge which includes the words "under God", since this is a violation of the First Amendment to the Constitution. In fact, it is even unconstitutional for government to estabish god belief in schools by ritual reciting of the pledge, whether every child is required to participate or not.
