VIENNA (AP) — Nine people were killed in a shooting at a school in the Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday, and the suspected perpetrator also died, authorities said.

Police said they believe the assailant acted alone. They said on social network X that 10 people were dead, including the shooter, and “several” were seriously wounded.

Mayor Elke Kahr described the events as a “terrible tragedy,” the Austria Press Agency reported. It added that the fatalities included students and at least one adult. Officials didn’t immediately give information on the perpetrator.

Special forces were among those sent to the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school, about a kilometer (over half a mile) from Graz’s historic center, after a call at 10 a.m. At 11.30 a.m., police said that the school had been evacuated and everyone had been taken to a safe meeting point. They wrote that the situation was “secured” and there is no longer believed to be any danger.

Photos from the scene showed a large police deployment, including at least one helicopter and emergency vehicles around the school.

Graz, Austria ‘s second-biggest city, is located in the southeast of the country and has about 300,000 inhabitants.

Austria is in mourning after the worst school shooting in the country's modern history unfolded on Tuesday morning in Graz.
A 22-year-old former student of the BORG Dreierschützengasse opened fire shortly before 10 a.m., killing at least nine people and injuring at least 28 others before taking his own life in a school restroom.

According to initial reports from Kronen Zeitung, the attacker used both a shotgun and a handgun during the rampage, which targeted two classrooms. Authorities confirmed that the gunman, a former pupil of the school, had recently acquired the weapons and may have been motivated by a long-standing grievance over bullying.

Governor Mario Kunasek of Styria (FPÖ) expressed deep shock in a public statement, “It is unbelievable what happened today in Graz. As governor and as a father, I am deeply saddened by this act of madness, which has brought so much disaster and incredible suffering. My thoughts are with the innocent victims, families, and teachers.”

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker and members of the federal government traveled to Graz to address the nation. A press conference was scheduled for the afternoon to provide further details about the tragedy.

The scene was rapidly secured by emergency responders, including the elite Cobra police unit. Authorities have since declared the situation safe, although the area around the school remained cordoned off for much of the day. Two care centers were set up to provide support for victims, families, and witnesses.

The Styrian hospital association KAGes confirmed that at least 28 people, including students and staff, were injured in the attack and are receiving treatment. Victims were distributed across multiple hospitals in Graz, with psychological care being extended to both families and medical personnel.

Video footage circulated online shows the moment gunfire erupted inside a classroom, and additional clips depict emergency teams sweeping through the school with weapons drawn.

Terrified students can be seen fleeing the building or waiting in shock as medics carry away the wounded.

9 Dead + 28 wounded doesn't sound like the shooter was using a hand gun. Not sure what Firearms regs look like in Austria but there had to be some planning or mechanism to obtain a suitable firearm and ammo.

That's the story I'm interested in.

He had a shotgun and pistol ( Glock )

Austria has fairly relaxed gun laws, licence needed for Pistols & Semi-auto rifles, repeating shotguns ( pump or Semi)
No licence needed for single shot or double barrel rifles & shotguns.

Cops have confirmed he was licence holder and the guns were legally held.

Pride comes before the fall.....Pride month ended.
Sounded like an AK to me. What I heard at least, not a shotgun. Nor did it sound like a Glock....I just listened to five or so shots.

Its truly sad that someone can't go to school and be safe. This is the crappy world we live in and its obviously not just the US. With relaxed weapons laws, some of these teachers and administrators should have been packing. If it doesn't have a metal detector, the wife and I pack everywhere we go. I don't care about the signs. If forced to deploy, we can work it out later in court when the perp is no longer a problem.

Vice mayor wants "general gun ban for private individuals"

After the act of terror in Graz, Klagenfurt's deputy mayor and youth officer Ronald Rabitsch is now calling for a "general ban on arms for private individuals in Austria."

After the terrible amok run in Graz, in which a young man with legally acquired firearms killed ten people and himself, there is now a demand from the deputy mayor of Klagenfurt, Ronald Rabitsch: General ban on weapons for private individuals in Austria.

"What else needs to happen"

"What else has to happen until we understand that private ownership of weapons is a real threat to our society? It is not understandable that more than 1.5 million private-owned firearms are in Austria. These figures are alarming," says Rabitsch. Experts warn emphatically: Renowned youth psychiatrist Paul PlenerIn the ORF interview, he points out that the availability of weapons is directly related to the number of homicides and suicides. International experience - for example from Australia, where gun laws were massively tightened after a massacre in 1996 - shows that consistent legal measures save lives.

Rabitsch: "We must finally act"

"It is worrying that 18-year-olds have such easy access to lethal weapons - even arms dealers are critical of that," Rabitsch continued. "We must finally act before we as a society have to complain even more young victims. As a youth officer, I see it as my duty to stand up for a secure future for our children and young people." Rabitsch thus expressly supports the appeal of Graz Mayor Elke Kahrwho have already called for a comprehensive ban on arms. At the same time, he calls for the federal and state governments to quickly develop legal measures to close dangerous gaps in existing gun law.

Rabitsch wants to submit demand to the federal government today

"I will continue to convey the demand for a general ban on private individuals to the federal government today. The state must not only respond - it must act preventively. We don't need more weapons - we need reason and decisive action," Rabitsch concluded.
