Europe's Polar Cold to Intensify through April, as North America Braces for a similar fate - Grand Solar Minimum - Electroverse

EUROPE’S POLAR COLD TO INTENSIFY THROUGH APRIL, AS NORTH AMERICA BRACES FOR A SIMILAR FATE — GRAND SOLAR MINIMUM
APRIL 6, 2021 CAP ALLON

Land masses across the northern hemisphere are experiencing a true taste of the GRAND SOLAR MINIMUM this spring, as while brief pockets of heat have intermittently prevailed, Arctic cold has never been far away, forever-threatening to wipe out those tender early-season crops that have been “tricked” into sprouting.

Overall, Earth’s temperature is falling (the UAH for March 2021 was 0.01C BELOW 30-year baseline), but brief pockets of heat will ALWAYS occur–even during the depths of an ice age. It is actually these swings between extremes that will hasten the failure of our modern, and surprisingly fragile, food production systems — constants are workable, even if those constants are cold, it is climatic unpredictability and extreme flip-flopping that is a growers most bitter foe.

EUROPE’S POLAR COLD TO INTENSIFY THROUGH APRIL

Recently, Europe has suffered a sharp reversal of fortunes — the continent has shifted gears, going from enjoying some of its warmest March temperatures on record, to a historic blast of polar cold and snow.

The low solar activity we’ve seen over the past few years has weakened the jet stream, reverting its usual strong zonal flow to more of a wavy meridional one. At the end of March, this flow was pulling warm African air anomalously far north, which resulted in the likes of Holland, Germany, France, and Belgium registering some of their warmest March temperatures ever recorded; and now, barely a week later, this loosey-goosey jet stream has conspired to drop brutal, record-breaking Arctic air over these exact same regions.

Scottish meteorologist Scott Duncan sums it up on Twitter:

View: https://twitter.com/ScottDuncanWX/status/1379023970490589184

Unfortunately, Europe shouldn’t expect another “amazing season flip” anytime soon — this record cold is here to stay, and is actually forecast to intensify as April progresses:

GFS 2m Temp Anomalies for Wed, April 6 [tropicaltidbits.com]

Britain, for example, is on course for freezing nighttime temps for the foreseeable, as a second round of April SNOW threatens northern parts — the UK Met Office has Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland under yellow warnings for more snow and ice, following on from the historic Easter blizzards of Sunday and Monday:

In fact, disruptive and potentially historic spring snowfall is forecast to sweep the majority of Europe:

gfs_asnow_eu_fh0-384-1-April.gif

GFS Total Snowfall (cm) for April 6 – April 22 [tropicaltidbits.com]

Some models even indicate the potential for snow in Venice and along the shores of the Mediterranean, with snow also favored in Turkey and over the Black Sea.

As in the UK, heavy snow was already falling in Germany on Monday:

View: https://twitter.com/ScottDuncanWX/status/1379019231145160704
Run time is 0:11

The events of the past week-or-so haven’t come as a surprise to those who follow the activity of the Sun and its impacts on Earth’s climate — swings between extremes and a disrupted/shortened growing season have been long-predicted, this most-recent out-of-season freeze is only proving the decades of study by researchers such as Dr Theodor Landscheidt and Dr Habibullo Abdussamato correct.

Also, these “swings” can’t be blamed on the increased variability seen in spring. These recent flips are proving unprecedented, and their prevalence and intensity are increasing: back in February, Germany registered its biggest temperature swing since records began–an increase of 41.9 degrees Celsius in just seven days. Climate researchers at the German Weather Service said the country had never before experienced a swing this pronounced in record books dating back to the 1800s — in the central German city of Goettingen, a low of -23.8C (-10.8F) was recorded on Feb. 14, and then just a week later, on Feb. 21, the city registered a high of 18.1C (64.6F).

We either adapt to these shifting conditions, or we suffer.

NORTH AMERICA BRACES FOR A SIMILAR FATE

After a hit of spring heat, North America is also about to suffer a sharp cool down.

By the second week of April, much of the CONUS, along with northern/central Canada, will have returned to temperatures far better suited to winter.

The GFS reveals the pattern shift:

GFS 2m Temp Anomalies for April 14 [tropicaltidbits.com]

With potentially record snow accompanying the chill:

GFS Total Snowfall (inches) for April 6 – April 22 [tropicaltidbits.com]

Cover-up those tender crops, or bring them indoors if possible. AGW won’t save them — the hypothesis is pure fantasy, propped-up by hokey prophesies and aging scientists with too much on the line to admit they got it wrong. Politics has also been intertwined into the ruse, and with the level of fear-mongering now in overdrive an attempted overhaul of society is at hand. It has already begun. We must reject AGW, fully and at every corner, and instead prep for the next great cooling epoch, we need to brace for the next GRAND SOLAR MINIMUM the inevitable societal collapse that both it AND an ever-weakening magnetic field will bring.

Things are about to get tough.

And it takes years to prepare.

Start now.

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with the great conjunction, historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among other forcings).

Both NOAA and NASA appear to agree, if you read between the lines, with NOAA saying we’re entering a ‘full-blown’ Grand Solar Minimum in the late-2020s, and NASA seeing this upcoming solar cycle (25) as “the weakest of the past 200 years”, with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.

Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.

Cold invades Western Europe - Record cold in Scotland - Ice Age Now

Cold invades Western Europe – Record cold in Scotland
April 6, 2021 by Robert

On April 5, Western European countries found themselves on the cold backside of a powerful Atlantic cyclone.

In England, gusts reached 144 km/h, in Germany – 108 km/h, in the Netherlands – 97 km/h. During the passage of the cold front, rain fell everywhere, in Germany and the Czech Republic in some places in the form of wet snow, which for a brief period covered the ground. In the mountains of the Czech Republic, deposits of wet snow reached 5 cm, even in Karlovy Vary, wet snow fell on the trees.

Behind the cold front, it got much colder, in London the temperature dropped 7 degrees a day, in the morning hours of April 6, the soil froze to -2°C.

In several cities in England, air temperature minimums have been blocked. In Aberdeen, the air temperature dropped to -3.4°C, breaking the 1984 record with a temperature of -3.2°C.

On the afternoon of April 6, England, France and Germany will remain in the zone of dense north wind, the maximum air temperature in London and Paris will not exceed 7°C.

On Wednesday, the wind will start to decrease, the sky will be cloudless, in the morning in England and western France there may be frost in some places, and in the afternoon the sun will come up and the temperature will warm to 10… 12°C.

MONSTER SNOWDRIFTS BLOCK SCOTTISH ROADS, SOUTHERN CROATIA SEES FIRST APRIL SNOW EVER, AS WHITEHORSE SNOWPACK REACHES 300% OF NORMAL
APRIL 7, 2021 CAP ALLON

Flake, flake, flake, little April snow-showers.

The Northern Hemisphere’s snowpack remains reluctant to return to 1982-2012 norms.

This real-world observation (aka fact) is a sign of the times, it is a dismantling of the AGW hypothesis, as well as a humiliation for modern climate science and every parroting proponent of an imminent heat-induced catastrophe.

Total snow mass for the Northern Hemisphere is holding at some 500 Gigatons above the multidecadal average (see the FMI chart below) — this reality is, and always has been, an impossibility under the Global Warming hypothesis:

[FMI]

MONSTER SNOWDRIFTS BLOCK SCOTTISH ROADS

Pictures from Aberdeenshire showed banks of deep, wind-blown snow on the morning of April 6.

The road between Fyvie in Turriff and Cross of Jackston in Inverurie was completely blocked following the extreme weather conditions, reports dailyrecord.co.uk — this event coming just a few months after the UK Met Office declared that AGW would render British snowfall a thing of the past by as soon as 2040.

What a joke:

April snowdrifts, Scotland [Image: Fubar News].

In addition to record snow, record cold is also besieging the British Isles.

Staying in Scotland, the city of Aberdeen registered a low of -3.4C (25.9F) on April 5, busting its previous record of -3.2C (26.2F) set back in 1984which is not only the title of an eerily prophetic dystopian social science fiction novel, it is also the year of the commencement of the solar min of cycle 21.

The mercury ACROSS the UK fell further on Tuesday and Wednesday, with parts of northern England registering -7C (19.4F) and below–some of the coldest April temperatures ever recorded in Britain. In fact, -10C (14F) was forecast for the Scottish Glens on April 7, and if that played out –something I’m working on confirming– then the all-time daily low for the date, which currently stands as the -8.9C (16F) set back in 1935, would have been comfortably surpassed.

The UK is struggling to see the back of what was a historically cold winter, particularly in Scotland — back in February it was reported that after nearly two months of largely sub-zero temperatures, Scotland was suffering “one of the longest spells of cold snowy weather this century;” and even now, as we enter the second week of April, there are few signs that old man winter is done.

SOUTHERN CROATIA SEES FIRST APRIL SNOW EVER

It was a historic meteorological evening in the city of Split, Dalmatia on April 6, reports dalmacijadanas.hr.

The temperature at the official DHMZ station, located on Marjan (a hill located on the peninsula of Split) dropped to 0.4C (32.7F) on Tuesday morning — a reading just a tenth of a degree above the lowest-ever minimum registered in April (from April 8, 2003).

Snow fell all over the city, continues the dalmacijadanas.hr article: “Southern Croatia does not remember when the last snow fell in April … it is the first known snow cover in Split in April in known history.”

Historic April snow in Split [Miroslav Lelas/PIXSELL]

Snow fell on the entire Split area, including Kaštela.

In other parts of Dalmatia (one of the four historical regions of Croatia, and home to Split), heavier totals were observed; here, as much as 20 cm (8 inches) of April pow-pow settled.

Kaštel Gomilica suffered a powerful snowstorm with hurricane gusts of up to 120 km / h.

Snow also fell along the coast in Vodice, Šibenik, and Brela.

While on the Dinara (a 100km-long mountain range), the mercury plunged to -24C (-11.2F)–again, one of the coldest-ever temperatures suffered in Dalmatia at this time of year, according to total-croatia-news.com.

WHITEHORSE SNOWPACK REACHES 300% OF NORMAL

Even taking into account the city’s Arctic locale, this past winter was epically snowy for the Yukon capital of Whitehorse, reports theweathernetwork.com.

As of April 5, there was a whopping 70 cm (2.3 feet) of snow left on the ground across Whitehorse–the most on record for the date. And for reference, the snowpack usually peaks around 30 cm (1 foot), and then by late April the base has diminished to all-but zero — this year is proving quite exceptional, visualized in the below chart:

Temperatures are forecast to remain unusually cold over the next couple of weeks up north, meaning some of that snowpack will inevitably make it into May, perhaps even June! A formidable shot of January-like cold is en route to Alaska and parts of northern Canada this weekend, with Anchorage expected to extend its current streak of 161 days with temps below the freezing mark. The city could actually see its chilliest temperature of the season during the coming freeze — extraordinarily rare for April, concludes the theweathernetwork.com article.

For more on the record cold engulfing Europe and North America, as well as a brief explanation as to why this is happening, see yesterday’s article on the Grand Solar Minimum:

There will be frost, snow and ice in places

Brits are bracing for another bitterly cold day with warnings of more snow as well as bouts of rain as Arctic winds continues to sweep the nation.

Up to 3cm of snow is predicted to fall in parts of Scotland while the mercury is likely to drop to sub zero temperatures again on Wednesday.

Lows of -6C will hit central parts of England this morning and forecasters warned that it will be 'a cold start for all of us.'

It comes after temperatures plunged as low as minus 4.2C overnight in parts of the UK, while some regions had 11cm of snow fall.

Today, a yellow weather warning for snow remains in place for parts of northern Scotland until 10am.

The severe weather warning states that 'snow showers may lead to some transport disruption' in the affected regions, with up to 3cm set to fall.

London is set to record the coldest start to April in eight years, after St James's Park saw the coldest average over the first six days of the month back in 2013, the Star reports.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: "The artic air is still with us as we start off Wednesday. A cold start for all of us with frost, snow and ice in places.

"But Wednesday is looking a little drier, a little brighter and certainly less windy compared to the last couple of days."

He added that the temperatures would be 'unusually cold' for an April morning.

As well as the freezing weather there are also warnings of flooding for some regions.

The Environment Agency has issued one flood warning - meaning immediate action is required - at North Sea, Sandsend.

There are a further 14 flood alerts across England meaning people should be prepared.

On Tuesday widespread frost and sub-zero conditions across Scotland, England and Wales led to a cold start for most, just days after balmy weather for the Easter weekend.

The mercury plunged to minus 4.2C in Eskdalemuir, Dumfries and Galloway, while a low of minus 4.1C was recorded at Winchcombe Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire.

Record snowfall in Alaska - Ice Age Now

Record snowfall in Alaska
April 7, 2021 by Robert

Breaks previous record set in 1948.

Fairbanks North Star Borough Schools were closed on Monday as the region dug out from more than a foot of snow — in places much more — that fell over the Easter weekend.

Average April snowfall – for the entire month! – is 2.9″.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities asked people to avoid traveling on the Parks Highway, as plows were unable to keep up from the falling and drifting snow. Some freezing rain also was reported in the area Saturday night.

Scattered power outages were reported on Monday morning, and more were expected.

As of 9 a.m. Monday, unofficial measurements showed more than 19 inches of snow on Old Murphy Dome Road, 14 inches in Goldstream and almost a foot in Two Rivers. The official measurement on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus was 12.4 inches.

That’s a new two-day April snowfall record for Fairbanks, according to Weather Service measurements, eclipsing the previous record of 11.4 inches, set in 1948.

According to climatologist Rick Thoman, (@AlaskaWx) “big snows (or rain) in Fairbanks in April are unusual. Past 106 years only six storms produced 6″ (15cm) or more accumulation in two days.”

Thoman also noted that the snowfall for Fairbanks between March 29-April 3 would be at least 21 inches, well more than the 1948 record of 16.9″.

Average April snowfall is 2.9″.

After the storm, temperatures in the Interior were expected to drop sharply, with lows in the double digits below zero by midweek, according to the National Weather Service. (As I write this at 9:30 am on April 7, the temperature in Fairbanks is -11F (-24C.)

The mid-ocean ridge is the most extensive mountain chain on Earth - Ice Age Now

The mid-ocean ridge is the most extensive mountain chain on Earth
April 7, 2021 by Robert

And we can’t figure out what is heating our seas?

_________

“The mid-ocean ridge is the most extensive chain of mountains on Earth, stretching nearly 65,000 kilometers (40,390 miles) and with more than 90 percent of the mountain range lying in the deep ocean,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

mid-ocean-ridge-NOAA.jpg

“The nearly continuous, global mid-ocean ridge system snakes across the Earth’s surface like the seams on a baseball. It is clearly visible on this map of global topography above and below sea level.” – NOAA

“The ridge system forms the longest and largest mountain range on Earth, winding its way between the continents,” NOAA continues

“Despite being such prominent feature on our planet, much of the mid-ocean ridge system remains a mystery. While we have mapped about half of the global mid-ocean ridge in high resolution, less than one percent of the mid-ocean ridge has been explored in detail using submersibles or remotely operated vehicles.”

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is only a part of the mid-ocean ridge, extends for about 10,000 miles (16,000 km) in a curving path from the Arctic Ocean to near the southern tip of Africa. The ridge is equidistant between the continents on either side of it.
More than forty thousand miles of underwater volcanoes – who knows how many are active? – spewing out red-hot magma (as much as 2000 degrees F), and we can’t figure out what is heating our seas?

Wake up, people. We are being played.

SLOVENIA SUFFERS COLDEST APRIL TEMP IN HISTORY, BELGRADE BREAKS ALL-TIME SNOW RECORD, EUROPEAN WINEMAKERS BUST-OUT THE “FROST FIRES,” AND AN ANTARCTIC BLAST THREATENS EARLY-SEASON SNOW IN SE AUSTRALIA
APRIL 8, 2021 CAP ALLON

Frigid air, spilling south from the Arctic and north from Antarctica, has invaded the lower-latitudes of late, throwing the seasons out of whack and breaking long-standing cold records — welcome to the next Grand Solar Minimum.

In Europe, the cold has come as a shock, gripping the continent just days after a brief burst of summerlike warmth. Some areas that experienced their warmest March weather on record last week are now enduring the coldest April weather ever observed (see Grand Solar Minimum and the Swing Between Extremes for more)

Switzerland and Slovenia were among the nations to register record low temperatures for April on Wednesday:

SLOVENIA SUFFERS COLDEST APRIL TEMP IN HISTORY

A new record for the coldest temperature ever recorded in April has been busted in Slovenia.

A reading of -20.6C (-5.1F) was observed at Novi Vasi na Blokah on April 7, at an elevation of 718m (2,355 ft).

This pips the previous record of -20.4C (-4.7F) set in the April of 1956 (solar min of cycle 18), at Rudno Polje.

It also makes it the second national monthly cold record set in 2021.

View: https://twitter.com/severeweatherEU/status/1379802661046910987

The record cold comes just days after Slovenia enjoyed a brief burst of record warmth.

Meteorologist Scott Duncan acknowledges the challenge such an extreme flip-flopping in the weather can have on flora and fauna at this delicate time of year, calling the situation “horrific.”

BELGRADE BREAKS ALL-TIME SNOWFALL RECORD

Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, logged 10 cm (4 inches) of global warming goodness on the morning of April 7 — a new all-time record for the month of April in books dating back to 1888.

According to Milos Milic on Twitter, the previous record holder was the 7 cm (2.8 inches) that settled in both 1996 and 1997 (during the solar minimum of cycle 22).

Below are photos from a northern suburb of Belgrade–“the lowest area of city, so less snow here,” writes Milic:

EUROPEAN WINEMAKERS BUST-OUT THE “FROST FIRES”

The record low temperatures suffered up and down France are set to continue well into April, and have prompted producers to take drastic –and expensive– measures.

Europe’s record cold is set to continue well into April.

Winemakers across Europe are taking radical action, reads a recent connexionfrance.com article: lighting fires, and giving their plants special “tea” to stop their vines from freezing as record April cold sweeps the continent.

Winemakers have lit hundreds of “crop candles” in a bid to increase the stave off the out-of-season chill.

The controlled fires can increase temperatures in the surrounding area by as much as 3C, but can cost up to €2,000-€3,000 per hectare.

ANTARCTIC BLAST TO BRING EARLY-SEASON SNOW TO SE AUSTRALIA

The likes of Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart can expected a “polar blast” of icy air this weekend, sending temperatures plummeting and bringing substantial snow to some regions.

Jonathan How, a meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, said a cold front expected for Friday would be followed by a second front on Saturday, created by a “polar blast” moving north from the Antarctic.

“This is looking to be the last hurrah of the warm season and the summer,” said How.

“The first cold front is a garden-variety cold front. The next one is the leading edge of this air mass moving north from the Southern Ocean. It’s a low pressure system that has been circulating the Antarctic.

“Sometimes we see these systems jump up towards Australia and that’s when we see these winter blasts.

“This will be the last time we see the high 20s and low 30s (degrees C.) until next spring.”

On Sunday the conditions will move through to Sydney, making for a chilly weekend.

“This sudden swing will catch people by surprise,” warns How.

The chill is forecast to bring the first snowfalls of the season to the eastern seaboard, with a dusting at 700 m (2,300 ft) in Tasmania, 1,000 m (3,280 ft) in Victoria and 1,200 m (3,940 ft) across the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales; however, these numbers are according to filthy warm-mongers the BoM, meaning accumulations at lower elevations are entirely possible.

The latest GFS runs reveals the influx of frigid Antarctic air:

GFS 2m Temp Anomalies (C) for April 11 [tropicaltidbits.com].

The model is also picking up on impressive early-season snow totals, particularly in Tasmania:

GFS Total Snowfall (cm) April 9 – April 18 [tropicaltidbits.com].

And lastly, today, April 8, our Sun is once again “blank”—-no sunspots are peppering the Earth-facing solar disk:

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING, in line with the great conjunction, historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among other forcings).

Slovenia beats the all-time national record with below -20 °C this morning - Numerous nearly 100 years old records broken with extreme cold across Europe

COLD

Many areas in Slovenia reached their coldest April morning over the last 100 years! The official meteorological station Nova vas na Blokah peaked at -20.6 °C which has set a new all-time national record for the month of April since the records began. Numerous extreme cold records also across other parts of central and western Europe, deep freeze and morning frosts have been destructive.

As we expected, the weather models were not wrong this time. An unpreceded extreme cold has verified across many parts of Europe this Wednesday morning, following the significant and historic snow a day before. Snowfall with some accumulation was reported even at the seaside in Slovenia and Croatia islands (Kvarner area).

In Slovenia, the weather station Nova vas na Blokah hit -20.6 °C and set the new official lowest temperature for April (the previous record at the station Nova vas was -18.0 °C set on April 4th, 1970). There was another record of -26.1 °C recorded with an unofficial weather station in the village Retje near Loški Potok.

Run time is 5:10

The previous official record for Slovenia was held by station Pokljuka (elevation approx 1350 m ASL), with -20.4 °C set back on Apr 9th, 1956.

Many areas across the northern Balkans have seen even lower temperatures than they were during the last winter 2020/21. In the case of the Notranjska region in Slovenia (e.g. stations Nova vas na Blokah, Postojna, and Babno Polje) this was the colder morning of the winter.

2021 set a new record having temperatures lower in April than January. Even if it happens in March, it is extremely rare. This is just a plain example of how extremely cold and historic event this event and this morning was for April.

The main reason for these extreme cold records is the Arctic cold air mass that spread across a large part of Europe this week. Clear (no clouds) nights with barely any winds and fresh snow on the ground with dry air mass in the mid-levels are an ideal recipe for extremely cooling in the nighttime hours.

Unfortunately, these temperatures were so extremely low that the ongoing blossoming fruit trees and early growing states of the vegetation were simply burned and destroyed.

Very low temperatures with record-breaking cold and damaging frost ware also reported from parts of England, France, Germany, around the Alps, Italy, and Croatia.

Now, another night with very low temperatures is expected, with possibly again going well below -10 °C in many areas. This will give vegetation just another kick and worsen the situation and damage done. Sadly, this is the 5th year among the last 6 years when spring damaging frost occurs. There will also be cold again on Friday morning.

Extreme cold hit Europe and continues until Friday

It might be the new normal as the warming periods at the end of winter and in early spring are becoming quite frequent lately. This helps vegetation to start earlier than usual, making it even more vulnerable for any potential cold outbreaks that normally follow at the end of March or within the month of April.

ARCTIC BLAST TURNS THE RECORD WARMTH TO RECORD COLD

The ongoing Arctic cold blast arrived less than a week after a very warm and locally record-warm period at the final days of March. The chart below (left one), provided by Scott Duncan, reveals some of the most impressive values recorded on the 31st of March.

It was +25.3 °C in Ljubljana (Slovenia), +26.0 °C in Paris (France), +26.8 °C in Koersel (Belgium), +26.1 °C in Arcen (the Netherlands), +26.3 °C in Ettelbreck (Luxembourg) and +27.2 °C in Rheinau (Germany). And also +32.3 °C in Badajoz (Spain), a very hot day for March to say at least! Many areas set their new March maximum temperature records.

COLD

The chart on the right indicates the historic Arctic blast which brought extreme cold over much of Europe just 6 days after, spreading over western Europe on the 5th and then 6th/7th over central Europe, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean. Becoming the historic and record-breaking cold outbreak for April.

EXTREME COLD IN SLOVENIA

Nova vas na Blokah hit -20.6 °C and set the new official lowest temperature for April in Slovenia (the previous record at the station Nova vas was -18.0 °C set on April 4th, 1970).

CHART

Below are some of the most impressive and record-breaking values this morning:

-19.8 °C - Babno Polje (the previous record was -19.0 °C set on the April 4th, 1970)
-19.5 °C - Zadlog
-14.6 °C - Iskrba pri Kočevju
-13.1 °C - Marinča vas
-13.0 °C - Kočevje (the previous record was -10.5 °C set on the Apr 14th, 1986)
-11.6 °C - Dobliče pri Črnomlju (previos record was -5.5 °C set in 1955 and 1956)

COLD

There was another record of -26.1 °C recorded with an unofficial weather station in the village Retje near Loški Potok. The station is, however, not a part of the national meteorological station network, so the data are unofficial. But the records are still made with the proper equipment and WMO standards, so this is comparable to the official records by the national meteorological agency (ARSO).

EXTREME COLD IN CROATIA

Similar to the territory of Slovenia, also Croatia experienced extreme cold this morning. Although the clouds remaining with the front departing last night, the northern parts were badly hit with very low temperatures and indeed lead to a destructive frost.

The most impressive values in the lowlands can be seen below:

-8.1 °C in Karlovac (at 123 m ASL)
-7.0 °C in Slavsko Polje (at 206 m ASL)
-6.5 °C in Jastrebarsko (148 m ASL)
-6.3 °C in Labin (at 231 m ASL)
-6.2 °C in Zagreb (at 129 m ASL)
-5.2 °C in Buzet (at 53 m ASL)
...

All these areas and many others have low elevation, so the early spring greenage and blossoming trees were ongoing. So the damage done to the vegetation is significant to complete.

CHART

Also, a bit higher places over the Gorski Kotar and Lika plateau pushed the morning temperatures extremely low, even well below -10 °C. Thanks to fresh snow and clear skies most of the night.

-14.3 °C in Jelvica, Križpolje (at 550 m ASL)
-12.7 °C in Gospić (at 568 m ASL)
-9.4 °C in Oštarije, Ravnice (at 329 m ASL)
-7.8 °C in Ogulin (at 324 m ASL)
...

RECORD COLD TEMPERATURES AND ALSO OVER WESTERN EUROPE

What is interesting about this cold blast over Europe this time is that it has affected a large part of the continent and the origin of the air mass is both the Arctic and maritime. Usually, these extreme cold events in spring happen with drier, continental air mass. The cold blast first spread over western Europe and then continued towards the central parts of Europe.

This Wednesday morning, it was very cold across France and the UK. An impressive cold with the lowest temperatures pushing 5 to 9 °C below freezing in eastern, central, and southern parts of France. Also over southern Germany.

CHART

Quite a cold morning also developed across England and Scotland. Benson (England) hit an impressive -7.5 °C this morning, it was -6.8 °C in Great Dun Fell, -6.2 °C in Shap, and -5.3 °C in Pershore. Attached below are temperatures this morning (left chart) and tabular data for the lowest temperatures for Apr 6th and 7th.

CHART

Very low temperatures with record cold values were already reported across France on Tuesday, thanks to the core of the cold pool spreading behind the Arctic front. Numerous weather stations have set the all-time lowest temperature records for April, those can be seen on the right side of the chart in the table.

CHART

The station Ruiel (28) hit -8.0 °C, breaking its previous record of -7.5 °C set on Apr 8th, 2003. Saint-Martin-du-Mont (21) hit -6.9 °C and set its new record after the previous record of -5.3 °C on Apr 3rd, 1996. Rouvroy-Les-Merles (60) broke its 40 years old record with -6.4 °C on Tuesday, breaking the old one of -5.4 °C set on April 10th, 1990.

THURSDAY MORNING WILL AGAIN BRING VERY LOW TEMPERATURES

It appears likely that the upcoming Wednesday night and Thursday morning will bring another day with extremely low temperatures. Thanks to the improved mid-level conditions, the general air mass is much drier, winds have weakened and snow remains on the ground or just around the hills and mountains around the valleys. The deep upper core with nearly -40 °C at 500 mbar height is just passing the northern Balkans with unstable weather.

Therefore we can expect it will be yet another rapid cooling overnight, with the potential for some areas to reach even lower temperatures than they experienced this Tuesday morning. The dewpoint temperatures are even below -10 °C in many areas, snow showers and even thunderstorms are ongoing in very cold air mass.

One would say this is quite typical for April. Indeed, but not so cold. We are in for another very cold night and even worse damage to the growing vegetation, which has been severely damaged or even totaled already this morning. It will also be again quite cold over Germany, Benelux, and France.

COLD

The most intense cold will likely occur over the Balkan peninsula, especially where the snow has accumulated last night. E.g. over western and northern Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, and southern Serbia. As well as over parts of Romania, Albania, North Macedonia, and western Bulgaria.

The temperature will very likely slip into below -10 °C in some areas, potentially even close to or below -15 °C over the most prone areas for extreme cold mornings (closed valleys with snow).

Broken cold records in France - Ice Age Now

Broken cold records in France
April 8, 2021 by Robert

Breaks a series of records for the entire month of April dating back to 1938.

A few days ago, a very deep cyclonic vortex left the North Atlantic for Scandinavia.

This atmospheric giant started pumping cold air from the North Atlantic to Western Europe on Sunday. And on April 6, the cold penetrated south into Italy and the Balkans.

In Western Europe it gets colder and colder and comes the snow.

A cold wave hit France so strong on the night of April 6 in France it set a series of low temperature records. The deterioration in weather conditions was especially noticeable in the northern and central parts of the country. In some regions, a warning was issued for a wave of cold, snow and ice on the roads. In the Haute-de-France region, the air temperature dropped to -6.9 ° C at night, in the center of the country and in the Loire Valley in some places to – 6.4 ° C.

In Orleans, the morning temperature dropped to -5.4 ° C, breaking the one-day record set in 1938. In the metropolitan area of Ile-de-France, night temperatures dropped to -3 ° C. There is a cold-weather warning on the Cote d’Azur, where the wind speed will increase to 12-15 m / s with gusts up to 20 m / s. In Corsica, when the cold front moves ins from the northwest, showers and storms with wind gusts of up to 12-15 m / s are expected.

Massive range of underwater volcanoes heating the world's oceans - Ice Age Now

Massive range of underwater volcanoes heating the world’s oceans
April 8, 2021 by Robert

“The massive mid-ocean ridge system is a continuous range of underwater volcanoes that wraps around the globe like seams on a baseball, stretching nearly 65,000 kilometers (40,390 miles),” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“The ridge system forms the longest and largest mountain range on Earth, winding its way between the continents,” NOAA continues.

The majority of the system is underwater, with an average water depth to the top of the ridge of 2,500 meters (8,200 feet).”

“The mid-ocean ridge is the most extensive chain of mountains on Earth, with more than 90 percent of the mountain range lying in the deep ocean.

mid-ocean-ridge-NOAA.jpg

The nearly continuous, global mid-ocean ridge system is clearly visible on this map of global topography above and below sea level. – NOAA

For a hint of what kind of activity occurs on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, look at Iceland.

Due to Iceland’s location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and its location over a hot spot, the country boasts a high concentration of active volcanoes, comments reader Winston Smith. “Over the past 500 years,” says Smith, “Iceland’s volcanoes have produced ONE THIRD of the TOTAL GLOBAL LAVA OUTPUT.” (The total global lava output that we are aware of).

Think about that! More than forty thousand miles of underwater volcanoes – who knows how many are active? – spewing out red-hot magma (as much as 2000 degrees F), and we can’t figure out what is heating our seas?

Wake up, people. We are being played.

What is the mid-ocean ridge?: Ocean Exploration Facts: NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research

Look at Iceland’s Bárðarbunga 2014–2015 [like Cowabunga only larger], says Smith. “Lava flow was between 250 and 350 cubic metres per second and came from a dyke over 40 km long. An ice-filled subsidence bowl over 100 square kilometres in area and up to 65 metres deep formed as well.”

Or look at Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 1779 (only 240 years ago). Lava fountains during that eruption are believed to have reached at least 3,000 m (9,843 ft) in height.

La Soufriere: Major Volcanic Eruption Imminent - 100,000 Ordered to Evacuate Caribbean Island of St. Vincent - Electroverse

LA SOUFRIERE: MAJOR VOLCANIC ERUPTION IMMINENT — 100,000 ORDERED TO EVACUATE CARIBBEAN ISLAND OF ST. VINCENT
APRIL 9, 2021 CAP ALLON

A Caribbean island has issued a “red alert” and ordered an evacuation following warnings of an “imminent” volcanic eruption.

The Caribbean island of St. Vincent is now on red alert and an evacuation order has been given as the La Soufriere volcano shows signs of an imminent eruption.

Run time is 0:52

Residents of St. Vincent on Thursday were told to leave their homes due to the “significant increase in the risk of an eruption.” Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, said people living in red zones –located in the northwest and northeast of the island– needed to leave immediately as the volcano continued to stir.

“There is now in the country an evacuation order,” announced Gonsalves in a message broadcast on social media. Shortly after the announcement, the roads leading out of the affected areas were jammed with traffic, with as many as 100,000 people reportedly heeding the order:

Run time is 0:18

Ships were assisting with the evacuation effort as the “glowing, fiery appearance” of the volcano’s lava dome became visible as darkness fell, said St. Vincent’s National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) on Twitter: there was now a “substantial prospect of disaster” due to the pick-up in seismic activity.

At a press conference, geologist Richard Robertson said signals show La Soufriere could erupt in a matter of days or even hours, reports news784.com. Robertson also said that at 3 am on Thursday monitoring stations had reported low-level seismic activity, with four different incidents at varying times, with the latest at 10 am. Long-period earthquakes were also reported. This uptick in activity is indicative of fresh magma trying to reach the surface, and a sign that the volcano was moving into “an explosive stage”.

Latest images –before night fell– showed a glowing dome, and also revealed that the dome’s height was now above the southern crater wall:

View: https://twitter.com/uwiseismic/status/1380293715349143554

St. Vincent has not seen volcanic activity since the late 1970s.

A major eruption at La Soufriere back in 1902 (during the solar minimum of cycle 13, and the Centennial Minimum) killed around 1,600 people–most of them indigenous Caribs.

Local media have also reported increased activity at Mount Pelee on the island of Martinique, which lies to the north of St. Vincent beyond St. Lucia. This is a concerning development — the major 1902 eruption at La Soufriere coincided with the catastrophic VEI 4 Mont Pelée eruption on Martinique–one of the deadliest eruptions in recorded history in which more than 29,000 people perished.

And as we know, history repeats…

Mount Pelee eruption of 1902: one of the deadliest in recorded history.

BACKGROUND

Stratovolcano: 1220 m / 4,003 ft
West Indies, St. Vincent: 13.33°N / -61.18°W
Current status: ERUPTING

Eruption list: La Soufrière violently erupted in 1718, 1812, 1902 and 1979.

Soufrière St. Vincent is the northernmost and youngest volcano on St. Vincent Island.

The 1.6-km wide summit crater, whose NE rim is cut by a crater formed in 1812, lies on the SW margin of the 2.2-km-wide Somma crater, which is breached widely to the SW as a result of slope failure.

Frequent explosive eruptions since about 4300 years ago produced pyroclastic deposits of the Yellow Tephra Formation, which blanket much of the island. The first historical eruption of the volcano took place during 1718; it and the 1812 eruption produced major explosions.

Much of the northern end of the island was devastated by a major eruption in 1902 that coincided with the catastrophic Mont Pelée eruption on Martinique.

A lava dome was emplaced in the summit crater in 1971 during a strictly effusive eruption, forming an island in a lake that filled the crater prior to an eruption in 1979. The lake was then largely ejected during a series of explosive eruptions, and the dome was replaced with another.

UPTICK

Seismic and Volcanic activity has been correlated to changes in the Sun.

The recent global uptick in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions is likely attributed to the drop-off in solar activity, coronal holes, a waning magnetosphere, and the increase in Galactic Cosmic Rays penetrating silica-rich magma.

Dr Roger Higgs: Global warming and cooling for last 2,000 years mimic Sun's magnetic activity, not CO2 - Electroverse

r1154962_14509409-e1617959725389.jpg

DR ROGER HIGGS: GLOBAL WARMING AND COOLING FOR LAST 2,000 YEARS MIMIC SUN’S MAGNETIC ACTIVITY, NOT CO2
APRIL 9, 2021 CAP ALLON

Below is a 500-word abstract for Geological Society (London) virtual conference ‘Climate Change in the Geological Record’, 26-27th May 2021 — written by Dr Roger Higgs, Geoclastica Ltd, UK (submitted April 8, 2021).

Most scientists urge shifting to nuclear and/or renewable energy, amply justified by air pollution, dwindling fossil fuels and, many believe, global warming by CO2.

For the last 2,000 years Earth’s average surface temperature (by proxies and post-1750 thermometers) closely matches solar-magnetic output (SMO) (ice-core proxies, sunspots, neutron detectors, magnetometers), after applying a ~100-year temperature lag. Both fell for 1,000 years from ~400AD into the Little Ice Age (LIA; ~1400-1900). Then SMO surged from ~1700AD (Maunder Minimum), the largest rise in 9,000 (sic) years, growing 130% in the 20th Century alone, reaching the strongest solar ‘grand maximum’ (1937-2004; peak 1991). (Contrast <0.5% parallel increase in total solar irradiance [TSI].) Temperature surged too, from the final LIA nadir ~1830 (Berkeley-HadCRUT data) to 2016, the largest warming (~1.3C) and highest peak in 2,000 years. The temperature and SMO graphs share two further characteristics, besides overall ‘hockey-stick’ shape: (A) multi-decadal up-down ‘sawteeth’, with superimposed 3-to-20-year sawteeth (longer than ENSO); and (B) surge amplitude about twice the 1,000-year decline. Three simple cross-matches confirm the ~100-year lag: (1) LIA’s three coldest peaks (~1470, 1610, 1830) mimic three SMO extreme minima (~1330, 1450, 1700); (2) the Sun’s 310AD peak (second-highest) aligns with a prominent ~450AD warm peak (with abundant geological-archaeological evidence for a ~3-metre sea-level rise in <100 years); (3) successive HadCRUT sawteeth cusps at 1910, 1945 and 1975 correspond to 1810, 1840 and 1890 (sunspot 30-year-smoothed chart).

In contrast, CO2 has six mismatches with the 2,000-year temperature profile: (1) CO2 was trendless before its modern rise from ~1850 by industrial emissions; (2) warming began (~1830, above) before CO2’s rise; (3) CO2’s rise was continuous (except seasonal sawteeth [Keeling Curve] and slight decline 1940-44), unlike very punctuated warming (supra-annual sawteeth, above; 30-year coolings 1880-1910, 1945-75; pause 1998-2013); (4) CO2 has steadily accelerated from 1944, but warming has not (after its 1975 resumption); (5) the 1975-2016 warming episode had the same gradient as the previous one (1910-45), while the CO2 gradient increased fourfold; (6) the Berkeley-HadCRUT dataset includes solar frequencies, unlike CO2. Evidently, CO2 and temperature are uncorrelated.

The foregoing evidence collectively indicates that the Sun governs global temperature, consistent with Svensmark’s SMO-cosmic ray-cloudiness theory. Volcanic mega-eruptions, commonest during exceptional SMO minima, augment solar-driven cooling (LIA “volcanic-solar downturns”). The ~100-year temperature lag is attributable to oceanic thermal inertia (high heat capacity, slow mixing). This ‘ocean-lag’, variably estimated by previous authors as 10-100 years, explains why warming persists today, despite solar weakening since 1991.

The logical conclusion is that negative feedbacks cancel CO2’s greenhouse effect. A “potentially very important” but poorly constrained natural feedback acknowledged by IPCC but omitted in their climate models is rising ‘BVOC’ aerosol emissions from forests growing faster by enhanced photosynthesis (‘CO2 fertilization’). Other IPCC climate-model errors include: assuming negligible solar influence because TSI changes are trivial (ignores SMO); and disregarding ocean lag. Further Sun-driven warming is predictable, ending ~100 years (lag) after the 1991 solar peak. Reviewers: Drs Gary Couples and Tom Moslow.

Fresh snow April 8, 2021 on a pair of pickups in East Anchorage

If you thought winter was over in Anchorage, the National Weather Service has some bad news for you.

Unseasonably cold air swept into Alaska's largest city Thursday, and forecasters expect it to stay through the weekend.

The weather service is warning of wind chills as low as minus 25 degrees. There are also high wind warnings in effect for the Whittier and Seward areas.

The cold is plunging south into Alaska all the way from the North Pole, pushing a band of snow through Southcentral, said weather service meteorologist Ben Bartos.

"And with that, we'll have some very strong winds barreling through the area," Bartos said. "It's going to hit us like a freight train, if you will."

The snow is expected to taper off midday Thursday, Bartos said, with northerly winds picking up to 30 mph and gusting to as high as 50 mph. Winds are forecasted to die down Friday, with the possibility of record low temperatures to follow in Anchorage.

The coldest areas will be East Anchorage and the base of the Hillside, at between 5 and 10 below zero, Bartos said.

"An Arctic blast of air like this, in basically the second week of April now, is highly unusual," Bartos said. "This is something we'd expect in January or something like that. So it's pretty impressive to see this cold of an air mass work its way south this time of year."

While Bartos said he's heard from many Anchorage residents that they're ready for winter to be over, he said the cold should be short-lived: Temperatures in Anchorage are expected to return to the low 40s by Monday.

Meanwhile, consistently below-freezing temperatures and steady snowfall this winter in Anchorage led to a record snow depth Thursday, setting a new mark for this late in the season: 24 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

France declares ‘Farming Disaster’ after record cold - Blizzard in Belgium - Ice Age Now

France declares ‘Farming Disaster’ after record cold – Blizzard in Belgium
April 10, 2021 by Robert

The emergency support comes after freezing weather caused significant damage to crops.

Farmers across France will receive government support after the agriculture minister acknowledged the damage the cold had wreaked on crops; with the cold set to continue across the country.

Minister of Agriculture Julien Denormandie confirmed a state of “calamité agricole” – or farming disaster – yesterday (April 8), to acknowledge the damage that many farmers had suffered to their crops as a result of the freezing weather.

He told FranceInfo: “[We confirm] the implementation of what we call the calamité agricole scheme

Mr Denormandie also said, “Unfortunately, we are expecting new freezes in the next few days to which we will be paying great attention… The situation is already very difficult.”

Cold air literally invaded Western Europe and caused frosts in France, which are extremely unfavorable and destructive to buds and flower buds. Fruit and vegetable producers were not prepared for such a drop in temperature.

In 2017, this happened in France, and farmers lost more than 15% of the harvest.

And in Belgium, residents of many cities, including Brussels, have witnessed a real blizzard. In some areas, more than 20 cm of snow fell.

Meanwhile winter has returned to the Balkans

The arctic air, having subdued Western Europe, spread further southeast. On the night of April 9 in the mountains of Bulgaria and Romania the temperature dropped to -17°C.

'Historic' freezes decimate French winemakers' harvest - Ice Age Now

‘Historic’ freezes decimate French winemakers’ harvest
April 11, 2021 by Robert

French fruit growers and winemakers are warning that the majority of their harvest this year (“80 per cent to 90 per cent”) has been lost to this week’s frost.

10 Apr 2021 – “No region has been spared: beets, rape, barley, vines fruit trees,” the National Federation of Unions for Farmers (FNSEA) stressed.

All through the week, farmers across France had tried to save their harvest from the frost by lighting fires and candles.
In Drome and Ardeche, temperatures dropped to as low as -8°C during the nights this week.

Local winemakers and fruit growers reported that they had lost up about 90 per cent of their harvest.

Philippe Pellaton, President of the Inter-Rhone Association of winegrowers, estimates that about “80 per cent to 90 per cent” of the nearly 68,000 hectares making up this terroir have been lost to the frost. This year should see “the smallest harvest of the Côtes du Rhône in the last 40 years,” he warned.

“The winegrowers are devastated, downcast,” he went on.

Burgundy, which has 28,841 hectares of vines, fared no better.

“We have at least 50 per cent damage,” said Francois Labet, President of the Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne (BIVB).

French winemakers light candles in vineyards to try and save fruit from frost

The region’s prestigious Chablis is particularly hit with damage estimated at about “80 to 90 per cent” by Frédéric Gueguen of the office of the Federation of Defense of the Chablis appellation. “I fear that there are some farms that will not recover.”
Southern Burgundy also recorded -8°C temperatures.

“It is historic because of the intensity of the frost and the extent of the areas affected: no one was spared in Saône-et-Loire. It is exceptional,” said Thomas Canonier, wine consultant at Vinipôle Sud-Bourgogne.

Winemakers in the Bordeaux region — in the southwest — have also sounded the alarm.

According to the Bordeaux Wine Trade Council (CIVB), the frost has “hit hard” vast areas of the Bordeaux vineyards, with temperatures sometimes falling below -5°C.

In the Dordogne, “not a single farmer has been spared” in the vineyards of Bergerac and Duras (about 12,000 hectares), which includes the famous Monbazillac, Eric Chadourne, President of the Federation of local wines, emphasised. “It’s to varying degrees, it goes from 5 per cent to 100 per cent of the buds depending on the parcels,” he added.

The President of the national association of apples and pears also warned that “peaches, nectarines, apricots will be rare on the shelves this year” because of the recent cold temperatures.

The chances of powerful geomagnetic storms may have just doubled

Dr Tony Philipps

Geomagnetic storm

If you think you are safe from geomagnetic storms, think again. A new study just published in the journal Space Weather finds that powerful storms may be twice as likely as previously thought.

Jeffrey Love of the US Geological Survey, who authored the study, analyzed Earth's strongest geomagnetic storms since the early 1900s. Previous studies looked back only to the 1950s. The extra data led to a surprise:

"A storm as intense as, say, the Québec Blackout of 1989 is predicted to occur, on average, about every four solar cycles. This is twice as often as estimated using only the traditional shorter dataset," says Love.

Jeffrey Love's data set geomagnetic storms
Above: The data Love used in his extreme value analysis. Red and blue circles denote the two strongest storms in each solar cycle. Dst is a measure of geomagnetic activity that can be estimated from old magnetogram chart recordings.

A study like this is part physics, part math, and part detective work.

Love has spent recent years digging deeply into historical records, trying to figure out how often intense geomagnetic storms occur. It's tricky. Even when old records of magnetic activity are published, they aren't always easy to find or interpret. Love recalls the example of Vassouras, Brazil, where important magnetic data were recorded during the Great Geomagnetic Storm of May 1921:

"My colleague, Hisashi Hayakawa, discovered that a copy of the Vassouras yearbook (an annual summary of magnetic data) was held in a Japanese archive maintained by the World Data Center in Kyoto. In that yearbook is a copy of the magnetogram we needed. It is in fragments, upside down, and mislabeled, all of which had to be sorted out. I digitized it myself, and we were able to use the data to estimate the intensity of the 1921 storm."

A mixed-up fragment of a 1921 magnetogram chart recording from Vassouras, Brazil
Above: A mixed-up fragment of a 1921 magnetogram chart recording from Vassouras, Brazil.

Tricky indeed. Love did similar digging for other storms as far back as Solar Cycle 14, which peaked in 1906. Ultimately, he was able to piece together a list of the most intense events. The top two storms of each solar cycle formed his dataset.

Then the statistics began. The methods Love used are not new, per se, but they are new to the field of space weather. Love explains: "Extreme-value statistical methods were developed by statisticians in the 1920s to 1940s. From there, it took a while for the methods to be distilled down and presented in an approachable way for non-statisticians. They are really only now starting to be used in the space weather community."

report of the Great Quebec Blackout in Montreal's newspaper, the Gazette
Above: The morning after- a March 14, 1989, report of the Great Quebec Blackout in Montreal's newspaper, the Gazette.

An important result of Love's research is the odds of another Québec-class storm: On March 13, 1989, a coronal mass ejection (CME) slammed into Earth's magnetic field. It hit with unusual force, because a previous CME had cleared a path for it. Within 90 seconds of impact, the Hydro-Québec power grid failed, plunging millions of Canadians into darkness.

As the geomagnetic storm intensified, bright auroras spread as far south as Florida, Texas, and Cuba. Some onlookers thought they were witnessing a nuclear exchange. Decades later, power grid operators are still figuring out how to protect their systems from a repeat calamity.

Québec was once thought to be a 100 year storm. Extreme value statistics suggest a different answer. "It's more like 45 years," says Love.

In other words, the chance of storms just doubled.

Love's original research, entitled "Extreme-event magnetic storm probabilities derived from rank statistics of historical Dst intensities for solar cycles 14-24," may be read here.

Comment: The Great Québec Blackout was caused by double tap CMEs

Severe thunderstorms dropped large hail stones the size of baseballs Thursday night across the Brazos Valley, damaging cars and homes.

Images and videos from the region showed the hail as it pelted vehicles and left dents in their wake.

Police cars on the scene of an earlier mass shooting were among the damaged cars, according to KBTX-TV.

The flagship campus of Texas A&M University in College Station was covered in ping pong-size hail after the storms passed.

Severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were issued for the region as the system moved eastward.

Frozen Alaska sees cold records plummet as Arctic grip aims for Northwest

Low temperature records fell throughout parts of Alaska this past week, and the same intense cold has began to infiltrate the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

The historic cold blast settling into Alaska at the end of the week sent temperatures plummeting far below zero, so cold, in fact, as to topple several long-standing records.

Fairbanks dropped to a staggering 27 degrees below zero on Friday, smashing the century-old record of 16 below zero from 1911.

Cities like McGrath and King Salmon also dropped below zero, and set new records.

Even in cities like Anchorage, where the temperature didn't drop below zero, the mercury in thermometers did fall just enough to still break the daily record from 1986.

In many locations, AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperature were similar to the actual air temperature on Friday, but not everywhere. In Fairbanks, AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperature plummeted to 32 F below zero on Friday morning, and then down to 39 F below zero again early on Saturday morning. These brief, but frigid, drops in the AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperature were mainly due to a light breeze developing in the area.

Prior to the cold outbreak, AccuWeather Meteorologist Renee Duff explained that April is usually the time where conditions improve across Alaska.

"April is typically the time of year when Alaska is steadily climbing out of the Arctic's icy grip, with average high temperatures rising 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit from the beginning of the month to the end in places such as Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow), Fairbanks and Anchorage," Duff said.

High temperatures in Anchorage, Alaska, usually start April in the upper 30s, before reaching the lower 50s by the end of the month. Fairbanks rivals this spring warmup average by rising from the mid-30s in early April and ending up near the mid-50s by the last day of the month.

The abnormal chill held over the region through Saturday night, but Sunday is not forecast to be as cold.

Milder conditions are on the way for Alaska this week, as the jet stream adjusts northward. After a high of just 20 degrees on Friday in Anchorage, and just 3 degrees in Fairbanks, afternoon high temperatures are forecast to soar back near 40 degrees on Monday, right around normal for mid-April.

But the cold air will have to go somewhere.

cold

In the coming days, the extremely cold air is forecast to continue shifting to the southeast across parts of western Canada and the northwestern United States. Temperatures managed to fall so far early Sunday morning, that some record low temperatures were tied or broken in major cities across the area.

Low temperatures on Sunday morning dipped low enough in both Portland, Oregon and Seattle to tie daily record low temperatures.
The cities bottomed out at 33 and 35 degrees F, respectively. Eugene, Oregon, had also bested the 1991 record of 31 F by dipping down to 30 F.

Temperatures are forecast to rebound quickly, with high temperatures on Sunday afternoon not far from normal. Warmer-than-normal conditions with temperatures in the upper 50s or lower 60s are likely again by Tuesday.

As the week progresses, the colder air will shift into the north-central United States into the middle of the week. Temperatures could end up as much as 25 degrees below normal for the middle of April.

EARLY-SEASON SNOW BLASTS AUSTRALIA, “WORST FROSTS IN DECADES” RAVAGE EUROPE WITH “AGRICULTURAL DISASTER” DECLARED IN FRANCE, AS RARE APRIL SNOW AND RECORD COLD HITS UK
APRIL 12, 2021 CAP ALLON

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING, in line with the great conjunction, historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among other forcings).

EARLY-SEASON SNOW BLASTS AUSTRALIA
A powerful Antarctic front is bringing early-season snow to Australia’s southeast.

The cold invaded Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia on Saturday, and gained further territory on Sunday, bringing freezing conditions, low-level snow, and the first frost of the year to many in the east.

Across vast regions, “temperatures are four to eight degrees (Celsius) below average for this time,” Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Jackson Browne told Daily Mail Australia, who’s agency is describing the ongoing conditions as an “Antarctic blast.”

Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain saw substantial snowfall, down to around 600 meters (1,970 feet):

While across the state of Victoria, snow accumulated below 900 metres (2,950 feet).

Places like Mt Buller and Mt Baw Baw were reporting impressive mid-April totals, with 22cm (9 inches) building as of Sunday afternoon–with the snow still falling:

“Cool temperatures were observed across ACT (Sunday) morning,” said the BOM.

“It will be cooler and patches of morning frost are expected on Monday and Tuesday.”

And then on Wednesday, it’ll be the turn of western and central regions to cop unseasonable wintry chills:

“WORST FROSTS IN DECADES” RAVAGE EUROPE WITH “AGRICULTURAL DISASTER” DECLARED IN FRANCE
European winemakers are counting the cost after hard frosts ravaged the continent, reports the Guardian — and with further crop-crippling cold on the way, and grape harvests look set to be “decimated” across some of the best-known and most-prestigious wine producing regions in the world.

The French government has declared an “agricultural disaster,” and is readying an emergency rescue package after rare freezing temperatures have caused some of the worst damage in decades to crops and vines.

“It breaks like glass because there’s no water inside,” said Dominique Guignard, a winemaker in the Graves area near Bordeaux, as he rubbed the first shoots on his vines. “It’s completely dried out, there’s no life inside.”

Many industry experts say the damage from temperatures of as low as -6C (21.2F) was the worst in decades, partly because the frost followed unseasonably warm weather last week–yet another example of the “swing between extremes” witnessed during times of low solar activity (click below for more on that).

“It’s a national phenomenon,” said Jérôme Despey, the secretary general of the FNSEA farming union and a winemaker in the Hérault region. “You can go back in history, there have been [freezing] episodes in 1991, 1997, 2003 but in my opinion it is beyond all of them.”

In the Rhône Valley, the head of the local wine producers’ body, Philippe Pellaton, said it would be “the smallest harvest of the last 40 years”, with losses of 80-90% compared with normal. Winemakers are “shattered, desperate”, he said.

And those “frost fires” will remain lit across many regions into the second and even third week of April, with further blasts of Arctic cold are inbound — according to the latest GFS run (shown below), temperature departures of as much as 14C below the seasonal norm are set to persist:

RARE APRIL SNOW AND RECORD COLD HITS UK
Europe’s historic April chill is being matched by rare spring snowfall.

The southern UK, for example, including London, is logging substantial spring flurries today, April 12:

Furthermore, the UK saw a low temperature of -9.4C (15F) on Monday, April 12 (at Tulloch Bridge in the Highlands)–the coldest ever recorded for the date in books going all the way back to the 1800s. This morning’s temp tied with the previous all-time daily record from back in 1958. Oh, and with a mean CET of 5.7C to April 11 (and so before this mornings record cold), England was on for its 16th coldest April since records began 362 years ago, back in 1659, and its chilliest since the 5.5C of April, 1922.

Britain is currently suffering extreme cold for the time of year, a reality the UK Met Office routinely calls an impossibility under the fantasy doctrine and sham-tastic stratagem that is the Anthropogenic Global Warming hypothesis (mouthful, apologies).

It’s long-time we ditched the notion that our planet is warming at all, let alone catastrophically.

The latest UAH data, for March, revealed that Earth’s average temperature is now below the 30-year baseline; however, there are powerful forces propping up AGW –one of the most pernicious yet intangible being pride– and mere facts won’t ever be enough to bring it down.

[drroyspencer.com]

Agenda-driven globalization requires a global revolution.

Either that, or a civilization-resetting cosmic catastrophe.

We will likely get both in the coming years.

Our “leaders” aren’t fit for purpose, and are nested snugly within the pockets of controlling agenders — they are routinely proven spectacularly wrong on some incredibly crucial topics, yet still wield immense political power.

Take John Kerry as just one example.

The man has recently been named Special Presidential Envoy for Climate by the Biden Administration, but has one of the most embarrassing track-record when it comes to climatic predictions–we’re talking an ‘Al Gore’ level of embarrassment.

Back in 2009, Kerry announced that the Arctic would have its first ice-free summer in 2014.

He said the following back in 2009 when referring to Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK): “I wish he were really up to state of the art with respect to the science on global climate change. You have sea ice which is melting at a rate that the Arctic Ocean now increasingly is exposed. In five years, scientists predict we will have the first ice-free Arctic summer.”

The whole thing is a scam, clearly.

And the same-old proponents of the same-old lies keep getting rehired to push the same-old agenda.

Reject the dogma.

Promote the truth.

Prepare accordinglylearn the facts, relocate if need be, and grow your own.

I found this link from a amateur radio (ham) organization webpage (www.arrl.org) - basically says that the "11 yr sunspot cycle" tends to spread out a bit right before a Grand Solar Minimum, so the timing of the one we are currently in could be crucial in determining if we are entering another GSM.

Edited to add - WARNING, it's long and "sciency" :lkick:

"Gradual onset of the Maunder Minimum revealed by high-precision carbon-14 analyses

Abstract
The Sun exhibits centennial-scale activity variations and sometimes encounters grand solar minimum when solar activity becomes extremely weak and sunspots disappear for several decades. Such an extreme weakening of solar activity could cause severe climate, causing massive reductions in crop yields in some regions. During the past decade, the Sun’s activity has tended to decline, raising concerns that the Sun might be heading for the next grand minimum. However, we still have an underdeveloped understanding of solar dynamo mechanisms and hence precise prediction of near-future solar activity is not attained. Here we show that the 11-year solar cycles were significantly lengthened before the onset of the Maunder Minimum (1645–1715 CE) based on unprecedentedly high-precision data of carbon-14 content in tree rings. It implies that flow speed in the convection zone is an essential parameter to determine long-term solar activity variations. We find that a 16 year-long cycle had occurred three solar cycles before the onset of prolonged sunspot disappearance, suggesting a longer-than-expected preparatory period for the grand minimum. As the Sun has shown a tendency of cycle lengthening since Solar Cycle 23 (1996–2008 CE), the behavior of Solar Cycle 25 can be critically important to the later solar activity."

LA SOUFRIÈRE UPDATE: VOLCANIC ASH REACHES 44,000 FEET (13.4 KM)
APRIL 13, 2021 CAP ALLON

After days of stratospheric venting, explosive volcanic activity is continuing on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent, with the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington warning of a volcanic ash plume rising to an estimated 44,000 ft (13,400 m) and COOLING the planet (take note Bill Gates, Earth doesn’t need your risky egomaniacal intervention).

Particulates ejected above approx. 10km –and so into the stratosphere– shade sunlight and reduce terrestrial temperatures — smaller particulates can linger in the upper atmosphere for years or even decades+ at a time.

As an example of how far a volcanoes influence can reach, SO2 emissions from La Soufrière have now been detected in Africa:

As of today, 50 volcanoes are continuously erupting on our planet (a continuously erupting volcano is classed as having intermittent eruptive events without a break of at least 3 months). That number of 50 is considered well-above the average.

In addition, “generally there are around 20 volcanoes actively erupting on any particular day,” according to volcano.si.edu; and as of April 13, there are some 30 volcanoes busily spewing ash and toxic gas into the atmosphere, an increase of 50%.

Today’s worldwide volcanic UPTICK is thought to be tied to the low solar activity we’re experiencing, coronal holes, a waning magnetosphere, and the influx of Cosmic Rays penetrating silica-rich magma.

La Soufrière eruption.

The entire population of the main island of St. Vincent is now without electricity or clean drinking.

Spokesman for the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, said about 20,000 people were in need for shelter according to reports received from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

“The eruption has affected most livelihoods in the northern part of the island, including banana farming, with ash and lava flows hampering the movement of people and goods,” said Dujarric in a Monday briefing.

A major eruption at La Soufriere back in 1902 (during the solar minimum of cycle 13 and Centennial Minimum) killed around 1,600 people–most of them indigenous Caribs.

…stay tuned for updates.

BACKGROUND
Stratovolcano: 1220 m / 4,003 ft
West Indies, St. Vincent: 13.33°N / -61.18°W
Current status: ERUPTING
Eruption list: La Soufrière violently erupted in 1718, 1812, 1902 and 1979

Soufrière St. Vincent is the northernmost and youngest volcano on St. Vincent Island.

The 1.6-km wide summit crater, whose NE rim is cut by a crater formed in 1812, lies on the SW margin of the 2.2-km-wide Somma crater, which is breached widely to the SW as a result of slope failure.

Frequent explosive eruptions since about 4300 years ago produced pyroclastic deposits of the Yellow Tephra Formation, which blanket much of the island. The first historical eruption of the volcano took place during 1718 (Maunder Minimum); it and the 1812 eruption (Dalton Minimum) produced major explosions.

Much of the northern end of the island was devastated by a major eruption in 1902 (Centennial Minimum) that coincided with the catastrophic Mont Pelée eruption on Martinique.

All, I'm trying to keep up but please bear with me. I came down with shingles (some around but not in my eye, thankfully) a few days ago, and it's likely going to affect my computer time. Funny this started a few days after my pneumonia vax. :-) I'm on a steroid and an anti-viral, but it's slowing me down a bit.

Lots going on with the volcanoes, among other earth-events, so I'll try to keep 'er going.
