I check Ice Age Farmer's Twitter page a few times a day to see if he has put up any new videos. I checked just now and saw that his account has been suspended. Can't remember what he'd posted just previously, but apparently someone didn't care for it.

The Adapt 2030 guy did not get suspended or banned, but a couple days ago he stopped posting there before it could happen to him.

I'll miss the information I got from both of these pages.

TxGal, when you said leaves in relation to the square bales, did you mean the layers that pull apart from the bale after the twine is cut? I've only ever seen them referred to as flakes. To me, one makes as little sense as the other. Why not just call them layers or sections? (: (: (:

Oh, well. What do I know? (:

I'd love to be able to mulch some of my garden stuff with straw like I used to, but I seem to have developed a real allergy to it. I loved how big clumps of wheat would grow up through the mulch from the seed heads that harvesting has missed. I'd cut handfuls of it even in the winter for the rabbits and they loved it! So did the chickens. Don't know if it was Summerthyme who told me or if I just read it somewhere else, but I found that one could take three cuttins of the grass and it could still produce its seed heads.

I thought it was so strange that we didn't get any snow in my part of Arkansas but it fell south of us. Even some in the bigger town where I went "big shopping" before all this Covid stuff started. So it missed me right here at home by about ten or twelve miles as the crow flies, Skimmed right past me to the south!

Ugh, yes, sorry! I've heard it both ways, not sure if east coast vs Tx applies :-)

Woke up to 19 here this morning, about 10 degrees cold than forecasted. I really hate winter....

Vietnamese amazed at snow-capped northern mountains
January 11, 2021 by Robert

Vietnam typically encounters a tropical climate with annual average temperatures ranging from 22 to 27 degrees Celsius (71.6 to 80.6F).

_____

Many Vietnamese have been drawn to the northern highlands, including Sa Pa, as thick white snow blanketed the region.

Due to drizzles at low temperature, snow has covered O Quy Ho mountain pass in Lai Chau Province and Sa Pa, a popular tourist town in Lao Cai Province, since Sunday night.

Vietnam typically encounters a tropical climate with annual average temperatures ranging from 22 to 27 degrees Celsius.

But the northern highlands have received frost and snow every winter in recent years.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the northern region would switch to dry cold weather from Tuesday.

American forecasting services provider AccuWeather said the lowest temperatures in Hanoi would hit 10 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and rise to 14 on Saturday. Temperatures in Sa Pa on Tuesday would be two to seven degrees Celsius, and seven to 14 degrees Celsius over the weekend.

Vietnam has experienced a colder winter than usual this year as the Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature drops, forming the La Niña phenomenon, weather experts said. The country should expect up to 27 waves of cold air coming from the north this winter, a typical average.

The French Riviera suffers "a winter like no other" - Electroverse

monaco-french-riviera-e1610451585533.jpg

THE FRENCH RIVIERA SUFFERS “A WINTER LIKE NO OTHER”
JANUARY 12, 2021 CAP ALLON

The south of France has suffered exceptionally chilly temperatures this winter, with reports calling it “a winter like no other”.

Woolly hats, coats, scarves and gloves are a strange sight along the Côte d’Azur (aka the French Riviera), reports monaco-tribune.com, even at this time of year. Normally, a light jacket is all that is needed to keep warm under the winter sun, but temperatures at the close of 2020 and the during the first third of January 2021 have held a baguette-clasping 6 to 7 degrees Celsius below average.

The French Riviera is susceptible to two different types of cold, explains weather expert Paul Marquis in an article on francetvinfo.fr: “Arctic maritime air comes from the North Pole, from the north-west — it’s a moist air, it’s humid. Continental air comes from Russia — it’s much drier, and that is what we are experiencing along the coastline at the moment,” says Marquis.

As recently as November, 2020 we were warned by François Guerquin, Director of Plan Bleu, the Mediterranean arm of the UN’s Environment Programme, that “the future of the Mediterranean is at a tipping point.”

Guerquin had a hand in the influential The State of Environment and Development in the Mediterranean Report (RED 2020) which evaluates the impact of climate change on the Mediterranean basin.

The report laughably states that the area is warming at a rate “20% faster than the global average,” both in terms of ambient and water temperatures. I say laughably because according to the IPCC and their dutiful MSM lapdogs, apparently everywhere is warming twice as fast as everywhere else:

This Mediterranean warming will supposedly have direct consequences for the region, particularly with regard to rainfall, which the report says will fall 30% by 2080–when very few will still be around to call out these charlatans.

But here’s the real crux. The report concludes that urgent lifestyle changes are required to avert catastrophe: “The transition towards sustainability requires drastic behavioural changes at all levels and in all sectors, the main threat to the area currently being our production and consumption habits.”

The report goes on to suggest that a crack down on superyachts will help protect the environment. But once again, here we have an official, well-funded report that conflates pollution and climate change. Yes, of course, less pollution is good for a local environment, but to equate the removal of superyachts from the French Riviera with saving the planet is a crock–I’m sure the local aquatic population will thank all those involved for their efforts, but to think the complex global climate system with its powerful cosmogenic forcings could ever be impacted by Monacan’s taking a bus instead a yacht is again, well, laughable…

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with the great conjunction, historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among other forcings).

Both NOAA and NASA appear to agree, if you read between the lines, with NOAA saying we’re entering a ‘full-blown’ Grand Solar Minimum in the late-2020s, and NASA seeing this upcoming solar cycle (25) as “the weakest of the past 200 years”, with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.

Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.

At least 13 Dead, Hundreds Hospitalized as Record Snowstorms Sweep Japan - Electroverse

AT LEAST 13 DEAD, HUNDREDS HOSPITALIZED AS RECORD SNOWSTORMS SWEEP JAPAN
JANUARY 12, 2021 CAP ALLON

Following the historic snowstorms of the past few weeks, Japan has been hit again: at least 13 people died and more than 250 were injured as record snowfall blanketed regions along the Sea of Japan coast, according to the latest report by the nation’s Disaster Management Agency.

Among those to have lost their lives were three people in Fukui Prefecture, and four in Niigata Prefecture, all reportedly while trying to remove the snow which topped a whopping 3.13 meters (10.3 feet) in some areas.

According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA), at least 10 monitoring stations along the Sea of Japan set new all-time 72-hour snowfall records late on Jan. 10, and many more busted all-time low temperature records, including in Furue, Kamigoori, and Kuzakai–with the latter logging a bone-chilling -24C (-11F).

View: https://twitter.com/sayakasofiamori/status/1348240830260105221

The unprecedented cold and snow has forced officials in both Fukui and Niigata to request assistance from the Self-Defense Force (SDF) in rescue operations, reports local media and @JPN_PMO on Twitter:

View: https://twitter.com/JPN_PMO/status/1347779698894389248

The heavy, drifting snow also continues to strand vehicles on Japan’s highways. Most recently, 1,200 vehicles were trapped on the Hokuriku Expressway in Fukui. While on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway in Toyama Prefecture, the snow has stranded more than 200 vehicles. A further 250 have gotten stuck on Niigata Prefecture’s National Route 8.

View: https://twitter.com/tourism_local/status/1347940130317733888

Following the record snowfall along the Sea of Japan, the JMA has now switched attention to the Pacific side. According to the weather agency, historic accumulations on the east coast are set to intensify through the week due to a low pressure system parked in the Pacific.

According to the reports, snow is likely to blanket areas between the western Kyushu region and the eastern Kanto-Koshin regions. A foot+ is forecast over the higher elevations in 24 hours through Tuesday evening, particularly in the Kinki, Tokai and Shikoku regions.

The JMA has urged people to refrain from making non-essential outings and to prepare winter tires or snow chains if they do need to venture out. The agency has also told the public to be wary of avalanches and of snow falling from roofs.

Caution is also still advised on the Sea of Japan side where the snow remains deep in many areas: as of Monday evening, the snow depth in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, for example, was still a staggering 2.29 metres (7.5 feet).

And on a personal note, the wave of support I received following yesterday’s “Demonized” article (linked below) has been truly astounding. Thank you to everyone that stepped up and helped out. There are a lot of good people out there–it was important for me to be reminded of that. Best, Cap.

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with the great conjunction, historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among other forcings).

The Polar Vortex Collaps - January 2021

Europe is finally experiencing winter weather. Why? The main reason is that the polar vortex collapsed in the first days of January. Now the polar vortex is irregular around the North Pole and multiple centres occur at lower latitudes.

The flow of the arctic air mass far to the south is thus very likely.
This video shows the development of polar vortex in the next 10 days (captured by wind at 30 kilometres above ground: Ventusky - Weather Forecast Maps...).

Bryan, Texas, record-setting snowfall
January 12, 2021 by Robert

Thousands of people across the Brazos Valley were still without power on Monday after Sunday’s record setting snowfall. Power crews were still working to restore electricity.

“It was pitch dark in our house. No lights and I woke up, my dog sleeps with me and my bed was shaking and I quickly realized it was because he was freezing cold,” said Alison Record, a Brazos County resident, who watched as linemen worked to get power back on in her neighborhood.

The blackouts were due primarily to downed power lines and downed trees.

“That was a very wet, heavy snow that we saw that can really weigh power lines and trees down and eventually they give way and break,” said Mike Connor, Bryan Texas Utilities Senior Energy Accounts Manager.

”Pretty much ripped the whole service down. We’re going to test it to make sure there is power or if there isn’t any power and then we can start working. If not we’re just, we’ll be hanging out waiting for BTU to respond,” said Abimael Sanabria, with Casiano Electric.

BTU didn’t have a timeline for when all the power would be restored.

Skiing the Streets of Madrid: Army Drafted in to Help after Historic Snowfall, Spain's Record-Cold Persists - Electroverse

SKIING THE STREETS OF MADRID: ARMY DRAFTED IN TO HELP AFTER HISTORIC SNOWFALL, SPAIN’S RECORD-COLD PERSISTS
JANUARY 13, 2021 CAP ALLON

Following the most powerful snowstorm in five decades and the coldest temperatures ever recorded, parts of Spain have come to a standstill: businesses and schools have closed, the power is out, and at least 4 people have died.

The weekend’s historic snowfall led to structural damage and broken heating pipes across the nation’s capital, and the army is still on the scene assisting with the clean-up.

Storm Filomena paralyzed Madrid, forcing the closure of Barajas Airport, suspending train services, and leaving as many as 2,500 people trapped in their cars:

NASA satellites snapped images of Spain blanketed in thick snow.

On Monday afternoon, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA’s Aqua satellite photographed Spain, revealing the vast expanse of snow:

Satellite image of a snow-covered Spain, as captured by NASA’s Aqua satellite on Jan. 11, 2021 [MODIS-Aqua/NASA Earth Observatory]

“Some suburban and rural areas in central, northern, and eastern Spain were coated with up to 50 cm (20 inches) of snow,” NASA Earth Observatory noted.

A collision between a low-pressure weather system and a cold air mass triggered the deadly blizzard, NASA Earth Observatory said.

Talking to Good Morning Europe, climate scientists Dr. Markus Donat said that Filomena was a truly exceptional weather event: “On one hand, we had this low-pressure system that moved from the Atlantic over the Iberian Peninsula. And this low-pressure system hit a stream of very cold air from the Polar Arctic region, combined with large precipitation provided by the same low-pressure system created the perfect conditions for this storm and this record amount of snowfall.”

Madrid logged 30.5 cm (12 inches) of snow as Filomena hit. Meteorologists noted that the capital’s accumulation was its largest since 1971, perhaps longer, with the Spanish weather agency AEMET describing it as “exceptional and most likely historic.”

Over the weekend, Spain’s transport minister, José Luis Ábalos, said that Storm Filomena “exceeded the most pessimistic forecasts we had.”

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said the situation on the capital’s roads was improving but was still “extraordinary” and many remained closed.

Ministers declined to say if the capital city would be declared a disaster zone, saying they first needed to evaluate the damages.

Record cold accompanied the snow.

Last week, Spain set a new all-time low temperature record of -34.1C (-29.4F), before then breaking it again a day later with a reading of -35.7C (-32.3F).

The unprecedented chill has persisted into this week, too.

On Tuesday, half of Spain was still struggling to deal with the cold snap, reported elpais.com, cold that is now turning the accumulated snow into ice, making clean-up efforts much more difficult, and treacherous.

Temperatures early Monday morning were the coldest since 1982 in many regions, according to AEMET. So low was the mercury in Madrid that the city offered emergency shelter to 4,000 slum dwellers, the telegraph.co.uk reported.

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with the great conjunction, historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among other forcings).

Near electricity blackout over Europe was triggered in France due to "Polar Cold Wave"

P Gosselin
No Tricks Zone
Tue, 12 Jan 2021 20:59 UTC

A further analysis of last Friday's European near power blackout shows that the problem had begun already one day earlier in France, due to cold weather, says a German expert.

At wind energy protest group Vernunftkraft Bayern, Jörn Künzle provides background on what was behind Europe's near blackout last Friday, January 8, 2021.

Candlelight
© No Tricks Zone

We recently reported on this here.

Disturbance began in France

Quoting energy expert Dr. Michael Schneeberger, "The disturbance in the European grid was triggered in France. Already on January 7, France's RTE (Le Réseau de Transport de l'Électricité) was forced to take essential parts of the electricity-intensive industry off the power grid. The RED alert level was ordered for the entire network of France."

Polar wave

The following reasons were decisive, according to Michael Schneeberger's research:

1) The polar cold wave occurred earlier than meteorologically expected, with low temperatures for France.

2) Due to delays for new rules by the corona management, 13 nuclear power plants are currently not on the grid.

3) Despite fierce EDF warnings, the Macron government (German influence, Merkel/Greens) shut down the 2 Fessenheim units (both fully operational, i.e. almost 2 GW thus additionally missing).

4) CONSEQUENCE: Therefore, beginning Thursday, power had to be imported massively at very high prices,
a) with continental high pressure situation, there is no wind (and this in whole Europe),
b) with an installed capacity of 57 GW wind energy, the available capacity was less than 1000 MW (as is well known, there is little sun even in January / ignored by politics).

5) So on January 8, the RTE called on the French population to switch off electrical devices, heaters and charging units, but that, however, was not continuously adhered to.

6) Therefore the only remaining possibility was to intervene using area-wide shutdowns or by lowering the mains voltage by approx. 5% (there has been no comparable situation in France in 60 years).

7) Germany was unable to offer any assistance, that was the trigger for a separation of the European grids by ENTSO for stability reasons.

8) It then took a good hour to stabilize the frequency again.

9) Southern Germany. Bavaria and Austria could be kept stable, thanks to the Czech Republic grid (the Temelin and Dukovany nuclear power plants were in full operation).

Note:

1) February 2021 is still to come, with even lower temperatures.

2) Also interesting is that Poland has requested Germany to restart the nuclear power plants immediately , otherwise electricity power supply would be massively at risk.

A similar incident occurred in November, 2006 when ten million households in Western Europe had to be disconnected from the power grid.

======================================

NTZ Note:

On Saturday we posted on how wind and solar energies have been mostly AWOL over the past weeks in Germany. For the period from January 6 to 9, we see that Germany's massive 110 GW of installed wind and solar capacity were delivering near nothing, thus straining the grid in these times of cold weather.

Hong Kong records coldest temperature in 33 years, large scale crop damage reported

Frost on plants

Temperature plunged below the freezing point in some parts of New Territories this morning, with farmers reporting large scale damages to their crops.

The mercury in Ta Kwu Ling touched 0.9 degrees - the lowest in 33 years since its record began.

The observatory pointed to a phenomenon called "radiative cooling" for the plunge, while predicting temperatures to get warmer in the next few days before a reverse at the beginning of next week.

Radiation cooling is a maximum cooling of the ground which occurs under clear skies, light winds and dry conditions. In winter, a large temperature difference sometimes exists between the urban area and the New Territories.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, the winter monsoon will moderate slightly in the next couple of days, bringing warmer weather ranging from 12 to 20 degrees from Thursday to Saturday, but still cold in the morning over inland areas.

While another surge of the winter monsoon will affect Hong Kong early next week, with the weather becoming cold again, along with some rain in the middle and latter parts of next week.

Ice Age Farmer has put up two very short podcasts this evening. He says he has started doing this because he can't Tweet any more. These aren't necessarily about the GSM except when he relates shortages of food to failed crops, but the first two, which I just listened to are informative and some of you may want to keep up with them at the "videos" section of iceagefarmer.com.

I also checked "oilseed crops .org" this evening. This is the Adapt 2030 guy and it looks like he's changed this site since I last visited there. He seems to be putting up interviews he's done with various people about food shortages, weather problems, ancient records of catastrophic weather events, etc. This is good as I can do knitting, mending and many other little chores while listening and not have to keep my eyes on a video screen.

Major winter storm - 14 states on alert - Ice Age Now

Major winter storm – 14 states on alert
January 14, 2021 by Robert

Blizzard warning for Central U.S. (South Dakota, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska). Additionally, 15 states are on alert for damaging winds and heavy snow.

In blizzard areas, travel could be very difficult if not impossible at times.

The heaviest of the snow will begin late tonight into Friday morning from Minnesota into Iowa, Wisconsin and parts of northern Illinois and Missouri.

Snowfall totals will range from 6 inches to as much as a foot of snow possible for Minnesota and parts of northern Iowa.

Part of that same storm will move into the Northeast by Friday night, where more than 6 inches of heavy snow is exected in upstate New York and northern New England.

Relatively colder air behind the storm will produce additional snow in parts of western New York and Pennsylvania this weekend.

For an example, here’s what the National Weather Service has to say about North Central Iowa:

Extremely stout winds coupled with moderate to heavy snow will lead to blizzard conditions tonight and throughout much of the day Friday over the central to western sections of Iowa. The heaviest snowfall is likely to fall over north central portions of the state, but even further south and west blizzard conditions are anticipated. Significant travel impacts are expected, especially along Interstates 80 and 35.

…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY UNTIL 6 PM CST THIS EVENING…
…BLIZZARD WARNING FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 PM CST FRIDAY…

* WHAT…For the Blizzard Warning, blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.

* IMPACTS…For today, some travel impacts are possible. For tonight through Friday, travel could be very difficult if not impossible at times with blowing snow significantly reducing
visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the Thursday evening, Friday morning, and Friday evening commutes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.

Slow down and use caution while traveling.

The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

Greenhouse tomatoes in Níjar
Greenhouse tomatoes in Níjar

The very low product supply translates into a rise in prices

Agricultural producers and companies in the fruit and vegetable sector in the Spanish provinces of Almería and Granada are not having a moment of truce. Due to storm Filomena, record minimum temperatures are being recorded across Spain; also in the south. Rain and snow have been falling incessantly throughout the week and in these conditions, the crops won't reach the expected yields.

Production has dropped considerably and is taking a toll on many crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant and peppers
. Prices are high due to the acute product shortage. In the current situation, there is no capacity to meet all the demand, not even that from contracts previously signed by the marketing companies.

In the field, producers do not have enough kilos to harvest, and handling warehouses are not receiving enough to supply all orders. The result is that despite the "good" prices paid at the moment, the volume is not big enough to make the activity profitable.

According to the analysis carried out by Juan Carlos Pérez Mesa, professor of the department of economics and business at the University of Almería, "the products with the greatest price increases are eggplant, zucchini and cucumbers. These products have practically seen their prices double in a week. The price of tomatoes has increased by almost 60%. Peppers are the product with the lowest increase (+17%)."

frost

The weekly monitoring data for tomatoes and cucumbers available to COEXPHAL show that the rise in prices is due to a very significant drop in the production. Pérez Mesa says that in the case of tomatoes, "there has been a decrease of 27% during the first week of the year." Cucumbers show a similar behavior, with the volume down by 30% in week 2 of this year. In the case of zucchini and eggplant, a similar behavior is expected in the next few days.

Pérez Mesa says that "although price increases are always good news, it is not so much when they exceed the threshold at which the customer decides to stop buying."

Everything points to this very difficult situation being extended, since bad weather is expected to continue, and once it's over, the crops will need a reasonable amount of time to regulate their productions.

Turkey - Hundreds of Villages Cut Off by Masses of Snow - Ice Age Now

Turkey – Hundreds of Villages Cut Off by Masses of Snow
January 16, 2021 by Robert

Turkey-15Jan21.jpg

15 Jan 2021 – In the Kurdish province of Hakkari, life has come to a standstill due to heavy snowfall.

Hundreds of settlements are cut off from the outside world due to the masses of snow.

Some 289 settlement areas are currently cut off from the outside world due to heavy snowfall. In addition to the Hakkari city center, the districts of Şemdinli and Gever (Yüksekova) are also affected.

The snowfall started during the Friday night. Nearly all roads and streets are covered in snow and in some places are icy; neither residential areas can be reached nor can villages be left. Public life has effectively come to a standstill.

In Gever alone, 57 villages and 77 hamlets are buried under snow. In Şemdinli, the number of snow-covered villages is 18, and the number of smaller settlements is 69.

Teams from the provincial administration’s winter service are in action in many places with snow-clearing vehicles to clear the roads of snow and ice. However, relief is not yet in sight, on the contrary.

Snow is expected to continue to fall over the next few days.

Passengers stranded on train in Sweden
January 15, 2021 by Robert

More than two feet (70cm) of snow leaves railway track impassable.

_____

12 Jan 2021 – Stranded train passengers received sandwiches. With video

Train passengers stuck since early Tuesday morning – got food from Långselehandlare. The train company was forced to evacuate the passengers in the afternoon.

In Långsele, the local trader Otto Lampinen has made sure that the stranded passengers on a train that is standing still now have something in their stomach.

He delivered sandwiches to the about 60 passengers who have been stuck on the train since 3 o’clock last night after a train derailed in Skorped.

According to SVT’s team on site in Långsele, the passengers were evacuated from the train later in the afternoon because the railway track was not passable.

There is a lot of snow in Långsele – the estimate was that it has reached 70 centimeters (more than 2 feet) so far.
