Yep. It's been tried a number of times and failed between an employer and an employee as "wages."
It can't work mostly because of government mandated safety nets and insurances. And if the government catches on.
Even if its just family. A associate of mine trained his son in the electrical trades. His son was doing really good and learned alot. In exchange for his sons labor he gave him a rent house to live in rent free, plus paid the majority of bills, water, electricity, insurance, taxes etc...and only paid a few hundred in cash a week when busy.
The plan was to get the business built up with sons help and in a few years, put the boy on minimum wage, just so he cold qualify to get the 4 years experience needed to be a contractor.
So after 3 short years they was ready to start a payroll and the boy was living up to the expectations. But it got slow for just one month (happens in construction) and the kid got pissed off because the cash got thin. So he sold some wire and started doing drugs.
Next thing my electrician had was huge fines for working his son under the table. The son filed for unemployment.
Similar things can easily happen with paying someone in real coin, times get slow and bam! Piper needs to be paid.
Bunch of BS!
My electrician had to sell his rent house to pay the fines.
