PREP Gokey Boots and Shoes.

Does anyone put their prep money into Gokey boots and shoes? They are expensive but will evidently last for about ever. I saw a pair years ago in a Salvation Army. They had been worn hard; but still looked impressive. Bought my first pair recently. I like them.

Always wanted a pair or two, but never jumped. As you say…very pricey. I’ll have to go check on prices now.

When I was a kid, the Botte Suavage was the Rolls Royce of boots. They were a real outfitter. When I got discharged they had a bunch of camping gear ready for me. When they started selling ducks on tiles as coasters, I walked away.

The soles of my shoes and boots wear out. I have tried many different brands and price points. I walk/hike a lot.
I admit I have never even heard of Gokey.

I'd never heard of them either. I looked at them on amazon and very pricey. I'll pay a decent price for footwear, but their prices are way way beyond me. DH does not appreciate good foot wear but at least I keep him in something other than walmart crap.

Don't know how many stores they had. There was one in St Paul where I went often - the owner was buds with my family in some connection. Very disappointed when they turned into a source for interior decoration accessories with an outdoors motif. For us, before REI, there was Gokey.

No.

$400 to $800 for a pair of boots? I'd wear out the lower uppers ( like jumbo shrimp?) in a few years, because I hike through terrain with lots if loose sharp chunks of granite, along with dead branches all about, and lots of mud, too.

Besides, they look as uncomfortable as hel...

Give me 10 pairs of actually comfortable shoes/boots, with different upper materials for different seasons, different outer soles for different terrain, costing about the same as one pair of those boots, and I will happy having a supply that will last several times longer than the overpriced single pair.

And, don't get me started on ridiculous custom knives, with crappy uncomfortable handles, going for hundreds of dollars apiece.

I have changed my thoughts on pricey footwear. If China does not keep sending shoes over (without troops in them) shoes and boots could get prohibitively expensive. These could well outlast me. (I am 76). I don’t want to go barefoot. We have hook worms in the South. Shoes could get to the point of being unobtainable. I use to buy cheap belts. They would tear up in 8-9 months. I graduated to co-op belts and they have been good; but I am thinking of buying a Hank’s belt made out of Buffalo skin. About $140. Has a 100 year warranty. If Hank’s is off by 80 years I should still be ok.

I have a supply of decent footwear. I'm also 76 and I have enough to last me a long time and I've gotten extra for DH. I'm not hard on shoes but DH is. He likes (gag) shoes with velcro fastening and he gets them at walmart. I've begged him not to wear those cheap shoes, but that's mostly all he's ever worn.

I bought a solid cowhide belt at a flea market for 8 dollars that had been run through a shape mill. It lasted for 14 years of daily use until my wife threw it out. I miss that belt.

Always looking for details I may have missed.
JeanCat: thank you for pointing me to a boot manufacturer I’ve never encountered before! I’m always on the lookout for US-based boots and clothing and am very willing to pay extra for them. That assumes they aren’t socialist and Gokey looks pretty solid to me. I’ll give them a try in the next couple of months and see how their boots work.

For waterproof outdoor boots (we're on a country place with livestock), we go with Bogs, Muck, and if we can get them, LaCrosse hunting boots. For 'regular' heavy duty boots, Timberline. All are pricey as all get out - unless you can find them at Goodwill.

Shopgoodwill.com has them somewhat frequently. Even with shipping & handling charges, they're usually at least half price and often new or like new. It's saved us a bundle of money for quality boots that will last a good while.
