"
Cicadas have been associated with war in the past, including during the American Civil War. Union soldiers held at the Confederate military prison in Andersonville, Georgia relied on cicada choruses. In 2021, the Washington Post reported that cicadas arrived on the National Mall to protest the war, and then the "17-Year Locusts Emerge From Their Burrows" headline appeared on page 10. "

I was always told to check their wings to see if there would be war or peace for that cycle...n they do show a W or a P on their wings...as for the accuracy of the W or P... don't remember what they showed before ... unfortunately...

well someone has awakened the cicadas here
I live across the road from a very large swamp (thousand of acres) and the cicadas in the swamp are getting pretty loud

I remember the last time they came out --it had to be a record eruption ==the noise was terrible and a couple of people that live out this way called 911 and reported that here was a UFO down in the swamp

I’d been trying to figure out what that constant noise has been the past few days. Then someone on FB mentioned the cicadas and the lightbulb went off. They’re out strong here.

Just FYI, there are cicada broods every year; it's just that some broods are bigger and therefore more noteworthy.

Sounds like the swamp cicada, the only eastern cicada that lives in/around such habitat.

Box turtles love them too I recall.
Our favorite turtles. Often catch them and put a couple in my garden. They also eat the lower hanging tomatoes and alike. Love them for eating the bigger bugs as well. We have tons of scorpions around, hope they eat them too.
