Food Freezing corn. Blanch or not?

I am freezing corn off the cob. I always blanch it before cutting it off the cob. But I know lots of people who freeze it on the cob without blanching. Am I just wasting my time blanching my corn or does it really make a better product?

Here's what I was taught to do. Cut it off the cob and for every 20 cups of corn add 5 cups of ice. Mix it all up, bag it, and freeze it. It makes it perfect and you'd never know you didn't blanch it.
I was putting up corn one year and the older ladies at church asked me why I was still doing it the hard way. All of them used this method. I've been doing it like that for 20 years now and never had a bag not taste good.
I doubted it when they told me but you know church potlucks never lie and there was always good corn at ours even in the middle of winter!

Many years ago, #wife2 and I froze dozens and dozens of ears every year. We tried many methods. The best and the one we adopted was to shuck/wash the ears, put them in baggies and into the freezer. Great for corn-on-the-cob, or simply allow to thaw, then cut off the cob if desired. Never blanched since.

My wife and I have a system. We cut it off the cobs with the electric knives, stuff it in the jars and pressure can it. Haven't failed us.
