Wow obo;

Seems a bit pricey for 6 weeks of food for 2, some N95 masks and a water barrel at over $1700...(with shipping)

The current offer from JC is 12 Weeks of food for 2 @$649, go to Lowes and get the N95 masks for 10 for $20, and a 55gallon drum for about $40 at Lowes (free if you know where to shop).

Yeah I know I thought it was a bit high myself as I could buy alot of food at Kroger and Walley world for that much money but some folks want Freeze dried to store away and forget it I suspose.

Main reason I posted is because some folks saying other companies were on back order. If they feel they must get it now this is an option I guess if you've got the bucks and want to spend them.

Good point ObO:

Mountain house is back ordered till maybe June.

If you want the Freeze dried NOW you will need to pay a premium. But as you point out if you are gonna need the preps in the next year, the local stores have plenty of stuff that will last a year, and you can wait for the "long term insurance" of Freeze dried to arrive later.

It all depends on the time frame you figure things will get ugly.

When do you think things will get ugly? I'm a littly hazy on the timeframe of the possibility of people getting sick from the bird flu here. Anyone have an idea or a hunch?

Thanks.

Might be worth going to www.campmor.com and buying select dried foods to supplement your canned goods. They carry Mountain House pouches as well as Campfood and Backpacker's Pantry, and Alpine Aire. Range of prices/options. Discount on 20 items of 10% and 15% on 40 items.

I was just calculating what I would get to add to my stash if I went in to the grocery store tomorrow....

Reader;

I have no clue as to when we hit the toilet.

I was looking at the timeline for the Bird flu and it has been spreading since 2003.

We have a lot of Canadian geese here that fly through, they may catch it when they are up north, but if they do, I figure they will die before they get back here. The current H5N1 kills the birds pretty fast. If they catch it up north, I doubt they will make it this far south (in a given year).

The only way I see it getting to CA or CONUS is on a airplane as bird do do on someones shoe. The birds that catch it up north will not have the strength to make it back here.

That said....

So many other worries, the CA leaves, the earthquakes, and terrorism...

I plan to live here a long time, we have a pantry, we have long term storage, and we have TEOTWAWKI preps... so I try to enjoy life till I need to worry.

Emergency Essentials Store
The worst-case delays are not till June, folks.

It is mid-May at the longest before Mountain House runs thru their entire production cycle. Orders are continuing to be shipped in stages as foods are made available.

They're handling this surge in demand very well this time around. No need to pay scalpers prices ... at least till April 1 when my stranglehold on them expires. :p

The June date was a one-day estimate that I posted until Mountain House regrouped the following day and decided to pull out all the stops and make a full commitment to stocking the emergency food. (By then, I was not able to go back and edit that thread title and a couple of folks kept pushing that thread to the top for some reason.) MH is doing mega-production runs, 4-foods a week till they are fully replenished and backorders are fulfilled in May.

I ordered from campmor . . . Not a lot, but several 1's and 2's to try out on the family. Their prices aren't bad . . .

I wish I could find the website I ordered from in 1999. They had fantastic prices on long term storage food. The quantity and selection was limited but changed often.

I order from the Country Store (http://www.healthyharvest.com/). They have good prices and stuff is in stock. Their prices on freeze dried meats is unbeatable.

The current offer from JC is 12 Weeks of food for 2 @$649...

But is it really 12 weeks of food? When I calculated the calories, it worked out to be about 666 calories per DAY if spread over 12 weeks. That's about enough for one meal instead of one day. When calculated at 2000 calories a day, it is actually 4 weeks of food for $649.

I stand ready to be corrected if this calculation is wrong.

I don't think the back log is that bad (ordered a few weeks back, shipment delayed 2 weeks or so.)

my order from them is currently delayed on some dried fruit.

Want a huge store of dehydrated food Ready Reserve has a 1 year for 4 people kit. It is heavy 1100 lbs, and expensive, between $3000-3300 shipped and consists of 48 cases of #10 cans. I had bought mine from Dragonslayer2001 last year.

Be sure the 'bulk' of your storage is not in grains when buying a food pack -- it is not calorie / cost effective.

Buy the grains elsewhere -- www.honeyvillegrain.com or www.waltonfeed.com , just to name a couple. Walton sells grain vacumm packed in 5 gallon buckets, you can easily do that yourself. see my website www.ofuzzy1.com. But first do a search here: "5 gallon bucket spin lid"

Some wallymarts have Mountian House single meal packs in the camping section. This is a nice way to try them. Call ahead - good luck on getting the phone answered

Some hints on the maountain house foods, when we go camping we use them, very tastey.

For using the pouches.
-- Use a bit less WATER than called for, about 2 tablespoons less.
-- Use boiling hot water, stir, zip then wrap in a towel to rehydrate for about double the time they tell you. Mix again at the halfway point.

One pouch is enough for two people when served with some bread.

I sure hate to "rain on some one's parade"..........

But N-95 WILL NOT NOT DO IT!!!!!!!

It will take a N-100 mask or Better! To protect from
H5N1 (avian flu)................
