Free Green Beans By The Truck Load...

A friend of ours planted 200 of his acres in green beans. When it was time to pick and send to the cannery the cannery couldn't take them because at that time they had too many beans to process and he was told he had to bring them in at a different time. Well the green beans would be to large for the cannery so he had to take a loss on the field. He started to plow them all under.:shk:

His wife said to leave some of the field and she would call around to see if perhaps someone would want to come and pick them. She called the food bank, prison, many other places and surprise......all of them either said no or perhaps at a later date. So she called around town and a few came out to pick them. We went and she told us to pick a truck load....so we did. I am now canning, and canning, and canning.

My husband went to a few of the neighbors and asked if they would like some ....99% said no. They either don't like them, only wanted frozen ones from the store and didn't like fresh ones, some said they had a few cans already so they didn't need them. Only 1 person said, sure I want as many as I can have. Smart person. (We have given some to our family members) I really don't know what the heck is the matter with people other then maybe they are really lazy....not sure.

I consider it a blessing from God, and I am very greatful.

So sorry for the farmer, terrific that his wife thought to call around!

Isn't it amazing that so many said "No thanks" Just amazing. I can't believe your neighbors turned down fresh ones!!!!

I'm glad for your good fortune. I bet you are already thinking about how to do something nice for them in return.

Good for you! Nothing like fresh green beans. :D I would be doing the very same thing, and have all my canners going at full speed.

And all those people who were not interested in free food..... what a shame... :shk:

Sorry to hear of the farmers loss there, but glad it worked out for the good for you. It is amazing when you try to give people free, fresh from the garden food that they will always seem to turn it down. Not me...someone offered me a bushel of granny smith apples yesterday...free for the picking...you can bet your behind i was down there within the hour picking apples...

Fried pies, apple pie ala mode....the list is endless what you can use them for and all free. Too bad you aren't near me, I would come pick a truckload of green beans too.

You be sure to tell those folks how awful we all think it is also. Dang people. I can't imagine what that would be like. teadrinker you ought to find out what that was worth and let us know. Maybe we can take up a donation to help offset the costs. Obviously with Dennis' permission.

DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH TWO HUNDRED ACRES WILL YIELD IN BEANS?

My family farmed and no, no one helped them when something like this happened, but if we can save one family farm from going under then I'm all for it. I hope like hell they had crop insurance.

What a shame that nobody wanted any. I planted green beans but something ate them all. It was the first time I've tried growing them, so I don't know the tricks of the trade I guess. I'd love to have somebody offer me free ones. That would never happen around here...I think most people would throw their stuff away (or let it rot, etc) before they (gasp) GAVE it away.

Those will be the same people that cry because they don't have anything to eat if TSHTF!! It's amazing how people are any more. We have a man by our camp that has tons of blueberry bushes. He has some one picking them, probably to sell to the stores in town. But there are more berries than you can imagine that don't get picked and go to waste. He has real high electric fences to keep the deer and people out, so we can't even sneak in and pick them. He's never out there when we go out, so we can't even offer to pick and buy some from him. I have found zucchini and other vegetables on his garbage pile by the road different times and grabbed them!

For those who wondered where we live ....we live in Wisconsin.....many farms near by who grow a lot, and I mean a lot of vegetables for the canners. Peas, green beans, beets, carrots, onions and sweet corn by the tons, and also potatoes.

This farmer has 2800 acres and he had to take a loss on all the green beans. It made me sick to see all those green beans laying on the ground after he plowed them under. I never seen so many wasted green beans in my whole life.

My husband and DGS went back to the farm and got another load....went to a mobile home park in town and started to go from door to door asking people if they wanted some.....one really sweet old lady said "oh my gosh yes!" she said that her green beans got ate by the deer and she didn't have any. Poor thing. So my husband loaded her up with some....she made sure he left with a jar of her homemade Elderberry jelly...but she reminded him to bring her jar back.

Happy to say that most of those people in the mobile home park did want them. During potatoe picking time here we usually go and glean the fields after they get through picking potatoes. So if any folks need potatoes and live in Wisc. let me know and we will try to help you out.....

And I am almost certain that the farmer had crop insurance...not positive but he does have a very large farm and his father has another huge farm across the road, and it's all irrigated <--- spl.

it is a pity they could of been at least used for animal feed - my goats would love them - plants and all - but I am sure the crop insurance would feel that since some use was gotten out of them then they would not cover it - a shame - well the soil will enjoy the organic matter but what a loss - good of you to try and help others

A blessing, indeed. How could anyone turn away free food? If they only knew what might be coming down the road. I can taste it now, fresh green beans with baby potatoes and ham. Good eating !!!!!!!

Sorry for the farmer - but WHAT a blessing for you and the people in the trailer park. How wonderful that y'all tried to share!

Sure wish all that food was close to us! ;)

The thought of all that good food being wasted makes me sad. And the fact that people actually turned down food makes me MAD!

Teadrinker, you are an inspiration with your kindness and thoughtfulness to take those beans and offer to share with others. Bravo!

I would love some fresh beans right now....I'd cook them like my southern mama did, with a piece of salt pork......mmmm mmmm

Wow, I would have taken a bushel of them! We didn't get our garden in this year and it doesn't look like I will be canning much....I have dozens of empty jars that could be filled if I had the veggies to do them.

Couple years ago I canned up 78 jars of green beans from our little garden, 95 jars of tomatos, and at least that many of other items we grew......all of it was eaten by us......

Sigh, no one up here would think to do that......

Stupid people turning down fresh beans! I am sick when I think about that.......altho it doesn't surprise me....

I'm sorry for the farmer, but what a bounty for those with enough sense to take advantage of it!!

I agree with Dinghy, those will be the folks crying & carrying on when TSHTF, and they'll be looking for a free handout to keep their bellies full!! Reminds me of the old story about the grasshopper & the ant ...

I'd dearly LOVE a load of fresh green beans, but there won't be any coming MY way for that price! :shk:

God bless you teadrinker, & the farmin' family willing to share their bean harvest!

Teadrinker!!!

I run 2 food pantries and would LOVE to take some beans if they haven't been plowed under by now.

Approximately where are you? I am right on the lake near the peninsula.
