A Maroon is a mixed-race African American. It was a term of derision in the slave days of the 19th century.

Well, yes, and is also a color (dark brownish red). But Dennis is right... it's usually used here as a tongue in cheek Bugs Bunny quote, as a mispronunciation of moron.

While we are starting to go far afield I thought the term was Mulatto.
The English term and spelling mulatto is derived from the Spanish and Portuguese mulato. The origin of mulato is left out by Daniel Webster in the 1947 printing of his dictionary, but it is a common term from the Southeastern United States during the era of slavery. It likens the mating of white people and black people to be the same as mating a horse and a donkey, the result being mules. Hince "mul atto" to specify mixed race people

However they did use it to describe run away slaves, not a mixed race.
You're right... I read too fast. "Maroons" were escaped slaves on various islands "Hispaniola had a large maroon population in the hills). A mulatto is a cross between white and black.
