Back in the day on ALL the western TV's and Movie's the most common phrase was: We'll give you a fair trial and then hang you. While the TV and Movies were fictional, that phrase was a fair idea on how people felt.
In an episode of Gunsmoke they tried a man and found him guilty. The Judge contrary to common practice of sending the man to Hays City for his hanging, made the judgment of having him hung in Dodge City. Matt wanted to know why? The judge said: The people of Dodge are removed from the result of their vote. A hanging is a terrible thing and they need to see it.
The state killing someone is a terrible thing, people need to know what it is like. And do it. Not to soften the blow to the unseeing, but to harden the blow to those who it will happen to.
Like @Doc1 said public hanging ought to come back in vogue. Even with all the fanfare and carnival atmosphere, as depicted in old photographs. The drop, is bad.

We should bring back public Flogging and Canning for some crimes. Pain is Natures way of saying DON'T DO THAT. Something like ten lashes for first offenders. No jail time, that's a waste of taxpayers money and a school for criminals. Repeat offenders get the original ten lashes and then another ten lashes for the second offense and not learning from the first time. So twenty lashes. Three strikes and you're out. 30 lashes total and a swift hanging because they are too stupid to be allowed to live amongst civilized people.

I've always found it interesting that activities people do voluntarily (camping, sleeping under the stars, house and yard work, or that they do for a living, is somehow considered cruel and unusual if a convict is asked to do it as part of their punishment.

Question I have always had is why don’t we just use pure pharmaceutical grade phentonol ? It is supposed to get you stoned like nothing else so no pain and an amount the size of a pin head will kill you. I can’t believe that some police department couldn’t supply enough out of their evidence room that nobody would notice. And the problem would have been taken care of.

It is not possible "to sink to their level" unless you are murdering an innocent human being just like them. That ain't what's happening.

To be humane, yes.
A bullet to the head is quite humane.
It's easy enough to build a machine that can do it without a human pulling the trigger too.
