That's true enough, but long before it became a status symbol, it was a survival tool and tactic. Allowing trees and brush to grow almost up to the castle or villa walls allowed cover and concealment from enemies...including dangerous wild predators, brigands and invaders.

Early on, they mostly used sheep to keep the grass short. The "status symbol" part came about when the super wealthy had the hired help keep large open expanses of grass manicured, solely for show.

All true, but I think that the idea of that cleared land being used to grow food was simply practical survival…the peasants usually gardened where they could in small homesteads or property close to the castle or keep.

But the grounds at places like Versailles were certainly a vulgar display of wealth that had to enrage the often starving people.
