This is Hialeah!’ Taco Bell employee refuses to help client who doesn’t speak Spanish

September 14, 2018

"A video of an argument with a Taco Bell employee in Hialeah has unleashed a wave of indignation on social media.

The incident happened on Wednesday night, when Alexandria Montgomery was trying to place an order — in English — at a Taco Bell drive thru window at 785 East Ninth St. The employee refused to take her order because she wasn’t speaking Spanish.

In the video, which was posted Thursday night, Montgomery asked the annoyed woman, “Do you have a manager here?”

“She is in her house sleeping,” the employee replied in Spanish in a dismissive tone. There was no one else to take the order, the employee claimed.

“Honey, I have a car behind you,” the employee says in Spanish and closes the window.

“Can you move please? I have an order behind you. There is no one who speaks English,” the woman tells Montgomery in the video and threatens to call the police.

“This is Hialeah, I’m sorry,” she said in Spanish.

Two other Taco Bell workers approached the drive thru window when they heard the altercation, but apparently they did not try to help the client.

“No more, papi,” the clerk said in Spanish to a man who was in the car with Montgomery and was trying to argue that they were in the United States.

Finally, they had to leave without making an order.

“This incident happened Wednesday night around 10:30 p.m. I contacted the manager and after explaining to her what happened all she did was apologize and say thank you and the call was disconnected,” Montgomery told el Nuevo Herald.

Taco Bell Corp. told el Nuevo Herald that “this does not meet our customer service expectations.”

“We have worked quickly to resolve with the customer to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” a spokesperson said.

In an update Montgomery made hours later, she added that “Luisa,” as the Taco Bell employee identified herself, had been fired and that it was not even her real name.

In a later statement, Taco Bell confirmed: “This individual no longer works for the brand.”

Comments on Facebook were mostly supportive of Montgomery, who described the incident as “racist.”

“Hialeah is still part of Florida and, as far as I remember, correct me if I’m wrong, Florida is part of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, it’s a country where English is the language we speak. This is a shame for the Hispanic / Latino community,“ commented a Facebook user.

“Wow, if Latinos do not speak English we try to understand each other. Money is money. I have attended deaf people, Chinese, Mexicans, Americans, the important thing is to be treated with respect,” wrote another user — in Spanish.

Hialeah is considered the city with the largest Hispanic population in the United States.

About 89 percent of its residents speak Spanish as their first or second language and more than 94 percent consider themselves Hispanic or Latino, according to the 2010 census."

Spanish words far as I know - and all I need to get fed at any Mexican restaurant.

The woman in the car was being a twit. I can't stand people who are twits at the drive-thru window.
If you want to be a twit, get OUT of the drive-thru and go inside.

Really? I thought she was being pretty patient myself. I don't think I would have been so nice. This IS still the USA I believe. Speak English! When I lived in Mexico I learned Spanish, I certainly didn't demand they speak English!

Plus, the woman understood her she she asked her her name just fine. She was just being a bitch. This should be played over and over again to black people. They need to know illegal aliens are not good for them or us. They need to realize what the Democrats really want.

Pull the franchise if the owner doesn’t have the moxie to keep the employees on a tight leash.

Taco Bell is not really a Mexican restaurant. Ask a Mexican and he'll laugh at you
It's like french fries aren't really French.

You live in Minnesota so your attitude is understandable. All you have to worry about is Somalis and the rest of the residents who speak with a cute little Scandinavian accent.

It's not that way in Florida. First of all, just because it's Taco Bell, being it's in Hialeah
the person in the restaurant was probably Cuban. I know you probably think all Hispanic people speak only one version of Spanish, but they don't.
Even Hispanic people have trouble sometimes understanding people from a different Hispanic culture. I won't even go into each Hispanic cultures dislike, really almost hate of other Hispanic cultures. Call a Puerto Rican or a Cuban a Mexican and see what they tell you.

Finally. the twit was the woman behind the drive through window. That's why the hell she's not working there any more.
You think that your country rube reply of taco, burrito and frijoles would have been good enough to get your order from the waitress who just wanted to screw with a gringa??
You just don't get it. The employee was going to screw with this gringa no matter what. After she or you would have read off the drive through menu, she would have asked you in rapid fire Cuban exactly how you wanted the taco and burrito and I guarantee you would have not understood her.
I've been to Hialeah and areas in Miami to buy stuff for my wifes dollar store.
We have encountered places where when the rare gringo comes in they take the opportunity to screw with them.
Fortunately my wife is a native speaker of Spanish, French, Arabic, Hebrew and 40 years of highly developed broken English. :) and it only takes a few minutes of her speaking to them in Castilian Spanish (that's the high class Spanish that educated Hispanics speak when they want to talk down to uneducated Hispanics) before they change their ways.

You need to realize that just because you may have been born here, there are parts of this country, areas and neighborhoods, where you are and will be the foreigner.
Fortunately for most of us, these ethnic neighborhood stores and restaurants will usually go out of their way to be friendly to the average American who doesn't speak their particular language. Every once in a while you will encounter an asshole.
The lady in the article happened to encounter an asshole. Someone who spoke good enough English to get hired by an international company, but chose to, for what ever reason, to screw around with a gringa that probably did only want an XXL burrito and a pepsi. That's life, and she handled the situation the proper way. She informed management that one of their employees was screwing with the customers if they didn't speak Spanish and harming the companies reputation and losing them money.

It's disgusting dysentery causing garbage anyway, I never eat there. Certainly won't now if that's the norm for them.

Given the altercation (and the line in the sand drawn by the employee - speak Spanish or not get served) would you eat any food they give you?

I hope that's your way of trying to be funny.

Okay....I'm just a woodsy rube from N. Minnesota - but not exactly untraveled. A lot of the places I've traveled, there was a huge language barrier.
I guarantee ya, I wouldn't have had a problem getting my order and not have held up the line.

What goes around comes around - all over the planet. This video starts when there is already some tension in the air. Wondering what occurred before the record button got pushed..

Haven't eaten there in years -- it's dog food. Maybe not even fit for dogs!

Actually, I no longer dine at any fast food restaurants whatsoever.

Well this is a simple solution, turn Taco Bell into the Red Rooster Restaurant and watch them go down. I always thought Taco Bell was a good place to catch the Chipolte crud, Hepatitis A, noro virus, and Montezuma's Revenge. How does one know that the employees don't spit in your food? Yes, I do think that way, that's why I don't go into those places.

Oh yea. I know a Cuban Doctor, a good guy, a gun guy, and he's married to a Dominican. Interesting conversations.

Actually that particular employee, on that day, would have screwed with you and found a reason not to take your order no matter what. It wasn't a language barrier.
Hell she probably speaks English as well as you. It was a employee being an ass. She understood perfectly, but she was not going to serve the gringa at the drive through no matter what, and she rightly got fired for it
The wife and I have seen this behavior down around Miami area a couple of times, however it is not the norm and most of the people are pretty nice.

Hell the wife and I go to the local Hispanic supermarket BRAVO.
The first language among all the employees and most of the customers is Spanish.
They have a little cafe/restaurant in the store where they serve hot meals. It's all homestyle hispanic food and is where most of the Mexicans and PuertoRican laborers come for a hot meal on their lunch break. These are people like roofers and landscape people so they aren't fancy.
I'm one of the few gringos that come in there. The woman behind the counter doesn't speak English (hell she's probably illegal) but she sure can cook. Red beans and gravy or black beans over Spanish rice, short ribs, pulled pork or fajitas, your choice of a half dozen kinds of spanish salads or plantains cooked 2 or 3 ways, and some flan or maybe spanish pastries .
All for 5 dollars and some change. She is super friendly and gives me huge portions. I usually point or try my rusty Spanish and she goes out of her way to warn me if she thinks my American redneck palate may not like something.
My 40 year old rusty Spanish, from being stationed in Spain, is slowly coming back.
My wife is enjoying the spectacle of my inappropriate Spanish.
My point is that this Hispanic supermarket was designed to cater to hispanics and the kind of groceries they like and even provide hot meals to hundreds of hispanics working the dirty and hard jobs in the Orlando area. Yet they go out of their way to cater to non Spanish speaking people and make them feel welcome.
I have found that to be typical whether it's in stores in Little Vietnam settled by boat people in the 70s ,or in the Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican or Argentinean or Brazilian stores and restaurants here in Central Florida.
Almost all of them speak perfectly fine English, and even those who just got here and whose English may be very bad or almost non existent will go out of their way to help you. The rare person who doesn't, or who acts like the Taco Bell employee is just being an ass.
They almost certainly speak English as well and you or I.
This same kind of behavior has been reported at McDonalds and a few other places in that area. It isn't because they don't speak English, it's because they are mad at everyone except their own culture. It the same attitude as a lot of black employees being asses and not serving cops.
I agree with other posters that after that kind of behavior from an employee, I wouldn't eat their food if they paid me.

Terry...I've been effed with by the finest in the world - French train conductors...

Yep they can be impatient as hell and Lord help you if you get on the wrong car, but we actually we found the bullet train from Paris to Lyon and then on to Geneva Switzerland to be very nice. Our stop in Lyon where they split the train and local vendors came on and sold the most delicious ham cheese and butter on a fresh baguette sandwiches that I ever tasted.
It's the Paris taxis that can be asses, until they find out that your wife speaks French and has actually lived in Paris for a short time a long time ago, and still remembers her way around the city. Even over a decade ago, it was the moslems that have ruined the city. Even the Champs Elysees has become low class and in some places looks like an arab souk instead of the high class and expensive place it used to be, with stores one after the other filled with designer clothes, furs, expensive jewelry and perfume. No more! McDonalds is a prominent huge multistory restaurant, the jewelry is costume or gold plated, and some stores actually look and smell like a hole in the wall store in a Karachi Pakistan souk. The only thing missing was the child slaves working pounding brass inlays into custom made to order lacquered wood jewelry boxes, and they're probably hidden in the back room.
I'm serious some of those places actually reminded of being back in Pakistan. They also sold the tiny perfume oils bottles which my wife likes because they're concentrated and the scent lasts a long time and she says they smell exactly like Shalimar and Chanel and Christian Dior even though they were brought in from Bahrain.
Oh and if you're stuck waiting in line outside the Louvre in hot weather be careful buying a bottle of water from the local kids. They frequently collect old plastic bottles from the trash cans and wash and refill them from the tap.

So yes, the famous snooty French looking down their nose at you attitude still exists all over, but now it's just as likely to be a moslem giving you that attitude. Hey they probably learned it from the French.

Oh and the French speakers in Montreal can really be asses to Americans too. The wife wants to go there in the spring but who in their right mind puts cheese and gravy on fries and calls it fine cuisine?? Oh well, who knows, I might like it.

Freedom Isn't Free
My first week in Germany, I decided to go downtown to a sidewalk cafe and get a cup of coffee. The waiter understood coffee but proceeded, in German, to ask me if I wanted a cup or a pot. Since I had no idea what he was saying, I ended up ordering eine bier, bitte. LOL We went to Paris on vacation and went to the Paris flea market. Went to a outside cafe and the only word on the menu I recognized was for chicken. What I got was a plain boiled chicken quarter. Blah.
