PREP Every time the power goes out...

I take it that Magic Jack doesnt work when the internet is down, thus isn't a real "landline" alternative to a cellphone.
Look, if you just wanna complain, fine. Get your ass a satellite phone. Maybe two or three. Wrap your house in copper mesh. Disengage from the internet. And go talk to Jesus..

It depends on the time of day and what the weather is doing.

If an outage occurs when it's stormy and mid-late evening, I shut off any lights that were on, make my way to my bedroom, turn on my battery-powered lamp (kept on the bottom shelf of the nightstand), pull out my book and read until bedtime.

If it's not stormy but later in the evening, I'll look out the window to see if the street lights are on. If so, I'll go look at my breaker box. If the lights are out, I'll go read or go to bed.

There's very little I can or want to do at that hour, so checking whether the world is still spinning is useless for me. Unless there are tanks rolling down the main street, I'm going to bed and get some sleep.

If power goes off in the middle of the day and it's stormy (and I'm home), I'll go read or work on a puzzle. No worries.

If the power goes off in the middle of the day for no good reason (and I'm home), then I'll be a lot more concerned, turn on radios, and start checking the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, my internet can go down at home or work without warning. That shouldn't happen, but it does. It used to greatly concern me. However, these days I find a work-around or something else to do for about an hour. If it's not back on in an hour, then I'll look into why it's down, unless I'm home and it's almost bed time. Then it can wait.

On TB every waking moment
My daughter texted me during the storm and said "Do you have a power outage like we do? Are you ok?" I told her I was watching Netflix with my solar generators running a light, the computer and the router. She did not answer.

Today, I told my son about it and he said..."but didn't she grow up in the mountains in your house like me?"

I did add a few small items to my purchase list for the next SS check. A warm vest, a single LED light bulb on a usb port plug, some more flash lights and some more of those light bulbs that store energy and give light when the power goes out.

When the ligths go out here it's because somebody
mistakenly turned on two appliances at the same time.

Remodeling our previous house, I plugged the toaster into the same circuit as the microwave, tripping it. 125 amp service. Wife demanded I upgrade our service. I ignored her, and moved the toaster to another circuit.

Day by day
Nope, we frequently get power outages here in the boonies. We'll call our service provider for an estimate on return of the power, and just keep on keepin' on.

I do fear it could be something more dire when our internet is out, but not for power outages….”usually” I do not, I should say.

It really just depends on what’s going on around me, such as a storm etc.

And of course, my reaction depends on whatever “doom of the day” is being discussed lol!

No. Just wait till it comes back. figure some idiot hit a pole knocking the power out. Course we have under ground wires to the subdivision. Some where up the road there are still power poles.

I don't even bother to call. I know they are on it, and have bigger fish to fry than answering the damned phone.

Always a great opportunity to test your off grid system - whatever that may be. Flip on the radio, light the lamps and the fire, bake some brownies, read a book, and chill in the peace and quiet.

You dont bake brownies with the power off.
Even normal gas stoves dont let you use the oven without electricity. Unless you have one of those expensive "off grid" models. Wood stoves with an oven? Old fashionend wood cookstoves are thousands of bucks.

I bake brownies, bake bread, make coffee, roast a chicken, heat water - what ever I like - just like everyday. Have a ~20 year old bare bones (IOW "cheap") propane kitchen range with pilot flames on the burners and the oven. They are still pretty common up here in lake country (MN). Need zero electricity. People not only use them in their homes for everyday, but cabins, deer shacks, etc. I wouldn't give up my stove for all the tea in China.

Also have Mom's beautiful old baby blue enameled, nickel encrusted wood cookstove in the kitchen for backup. They too are pretty common up here for off grid use. The good ones stay in the family.

They really are something.

Was going to mention about the off-grid propane stoves/ovens. I don't think you can buy the pilot flame models anymore, but the new ones use a simple battery powered spark ignitor. Not sure how well they work myself, but are available in a lot of places....I think even Home Depot. My good friend in California just had a really nice one put in her kitchen in California - says it works like a champ, and their power can be out for literally months when PG&E decides to take a dump.

Can you imagine a CME, super flare, or micronova frying all cell phones? No cell phones and no Starbucks. These young folks would completely freak out, but without a clue as to how bad it would soon be.

I finally took off early Friday and installed my Starlink, very happy with it.
Took industrial power strip and have tv, roku and router plugged in.
Solar Gen right beside the cabinet and all I have to do now if power goes off is move one plug from wall socket to Gen socket.

We’ve been extremely happy with Flint Energies. Last night our power went off for maybe 10 seconds. Now our internet …
Must be that it's crappy in our area then. Our power is surging all the time--with no bad weather in the area--and I'm always afraid our appliances are going to get destroyed.

No. I’m fortunate enough to be running a lot of my load off of solar and batteries. When my power goes out the ceiling fan stops and the tv goes off if it is turned on but the lights stay on so I might not notice.
I have a SOL-ARK 15k 2P. 8600 watts of panels and 30KW of batteries. Runs the whole house and well house. Also grid tied and my average electric bill is $11.00 a month. On our side of the mountain there is a single ended wire feeding around 30 houses and power outages are way too common.

Our gas stove has an igniter that requires power before the oven will light and the oven controls need a running chip. Adding the fridge and the stove are next on my list to move to my solar/battery gear.

I want starlink, but I suspect I have significant tree issues with adequate visibility of the sky. There appears to be no real way to determine if it will actually work short of buying the gear and trying it. I'd love to find someone with starlink mobile to visit me and see if it will actually work here. I have everything else involved grid independent already.
