El-Sayed wins critical Michigan Senate primary: Live results, updates

Progressive Abdul El-Sayed defeated moderate Rep. Haley Stevens for the Democratic nomination for Senate in Michigan, NBC News and Decision Desk HQhave projected, a major victory for the Democratic Party's left wing in one of the most pivotal races of the 2026 election season.

El-Sayed will now be charged with holding the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters in the pivotal swing state − the biggest electability test for the party's progressive wing in 2026.

The political newcomer El-Sayed's win comes nearly two years after President Donald Trump won Michigan in 2024. Stevens, a former Obama administration official embraced by the party establishment, had argued that El-Sayed, a Detroit-based public health officer, risks losing the seat to Republican Mike Rogers, who is unopposed for his party's nomination.

El-Sayed's side contends outsider candidates generate more enthusiasm.

Senate squeaker: How El-Sayed's primary victory spotlights Dems' divide
The race between Stevens and El-Sayed has been heated since state Sen. Mallory McMorrow exited on July 5, making the divisions clearer between the centrist congresswoman and progressive insurgent.

The day after the primary, El-Sayed appeared on "CBS Mornings" and said his top goal is to unify Democratic voters alongside Stevens to collectively defeat Rogers.

“We’ve got to bring the party together, and I know both she and I are committed to doing that,” El-Sayed said. “We’ve got only 13 weeks to beat a guy who has no business being in the U.S. Senate, so I looking forward to that conversation. Grateful for the hard-fought race that we had and the things that unify us are so much bigger than any of the things that divided us.”

Candidates traded blows in contentious primary race

The Democratic opponents have traded barbs over spending from pro-Israel groups, including after a contentious July 27 debate.

El-Sayed slammed Stevens to Fox 2 Detroit for her support from pro-Israel groups, who want to prevent the former public health director from prevailing in the race. Stevens has criticized El-Sayed over his financial disclosures.

"I think this is all a distraction from the question of who are all the 501C4s that have funded Center Forward (PAC), who are all the funders behind the Center for Democratic Priorities?" El-Sayed said. "Now, to say that somehow my tax return is more important to the voters in the state than the $60 million that have been spent in this race on ads, most of them attacking me at this point, I think is missing the vote – so, I'm happy to release everything."

On Election Day, at her polling place in Birmingham, Michigan, Stevens portrayed herself as the most authentic candidate, telling reporters – including Fox – that El-Sayed's support from figures like controversial leftist political commentator Hasan Piker has caused discomfort.

"Some of this stuff makes people uncomfortable, frankly it makes me uncomfortable," Stevens said. "We don't need these demagogues or people citing allegiance to Mao coming in."

Trump thinks his preferred Senate candidate will fare better than El-Sayed

For weeks, the two candidates have clawed at each other for the party's nomination in the battleground state that could determine control of the Senate in President Donald Trump's last two years in office.

Trump said in a Fox News interview on Aug. 4 before the Democratic primary results were called that Michigan Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers would fare better in a general election contest against El-Sayed than one against Stevens.

"I'm not a big believer in polls, but I believe in them somewhat. Based on the polls, he'll (Rogers) do much better against Abdul than he's gonna do against the congresswoman," Trump said

Electability has been a key argument in Stevens' campaign.

While El-Sayed was ahead in many polls over Stevens, including a recent survey conducted by Emerson College, the Democratic novice is trailing in some polling against Rogers, which the GOP nominee sees as advantageous.

"If he wins, I think we’re in good shape,” Rogers told CNN last month in response to a question about his campaign’s strategy for El-Sayed. "I mean, I think he’s so radical. I think he’s going to lose big parts of the west part of the state. We think we can do well in part of the southeast part of the state. I think we’ll do well if he in fact is the nominee."

Meet the candidates running for Michigan governor in 2026 election

Clara Hendrickson
In a competitive race for governor, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, is set to face off against Republican U.S. Rep. John James to lead the state after eight years with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at the helm.

The two fended off primary challenges. Benson defeated Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson while James beat Oakland County businessman Perry Johnson.

Benson, 44, of Detroit, has served as secretary of state since 2019. Her campaign promises "to make Michigan the best place to be a kid, raise a kid, and call home." James, 45, of Shelby Township, currently represents Michigan's 10th Congressional District, which encompasses part of Macomb and Oakland counties. His campaign pledges to "Make Michigan Great Again."

While James touts President Donald Trump's endorsement in the race and has falsely claimed that Trump won the 2020 election in Michigan, Benson boasts her record standing up to Trump's election disinformation. James has supported Trump's policy priorities, including voting for the president's tax and spending plan that cut federal funding for Medicaid and food assistance and rejecting a resolution to end the Iran War. Benson has argued that James' support for Trump's agenda has created cost-of-living challenges in Michigan.

More: Reports: Jocelyn Benson wins Democratic primary for Michigan governorMore: John James wins Michigan's GOP primary for governor, per reports
The two have put forward different visions for Michigan's future.

James wants to eliminate Michigan's income tax, the largest source of state revenue. He wants to allow parents to opt their children out of "controversial" subjects taught in schools. He has also proposed refunding individuals and businesses fined for COVID-related violations.

Benson wants to expand free pre-K to three-year-olds. She also wants to allow local governments to establish higher minimum wages than the one set by the state. She proposes overhauling the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to help residents access services such as Medicaid and food assistance.

Republican Governors Association Chair Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte celebrated James' victory. "James is a combat veteran, job creator, and a leader who can deliver results, clean up corruption, lower costs, and bring transparency to healthcare," he said in a Tuesday, Aug. 4 statement that called Benson "not fit to lead."

Democratic Governors Association Executive Director Meghan Meehan-Draper, in turn, blasted James in a statement that didn't mention Benson. "John James is a two-time statewide loser who is out for himself, and we’re going to make him a three-time statewide loser in November," she said.

Trump is pretty good at reading the "feelz." And to have Trump connected with your electoral name IS a game enhancer.

Whether it is enough to overcome the election fraud is the question.

Dobbin

And Benson ( sec of state) … Democrat nominee for November gubernatorial against James has already been involved with voter fraud … more than once. I think it’s still under investigation from recent news.

How does that happen! The fact she is in the running is beyond me.

Great news for the Republican Party. El-Sayed, a Communist loser who hates Jews and Israel, is the projected winner in his race with the Socialist. As usual, the Polls were way off on this one. She was not expected to do nearly as well as she did. Now, the Dumocrats crazy policies will only get worse!

Benson Campaign Reserves $10 Million in Ad Time for General Election

Today, Jocelyn Benson’s campaign for governor announced it has reserved $10 million in air time starting in September – an eight-figure statewide investment that will carry Benson’s message of lowering costs, raising wages, and fighting corruption through the fall. The reservation underscores Benson’s commanding position ahead of tomorrow’s primary and solidifies her strong position in the general.

The news comes on the heels of the campaign’s record-breaking fundraising haul of $5 million since January that gives Benson the biggest general election war chest. Meanwhile, the Republican candidates spent months burning through millions of dollars to prove their loyalty to Donald Trump.

“Our $10 million ad buy is the latest sign of a campaign that is outworking the competition,” said Benson deputy campaign manager Alyssa Bradley.“Michigan voters are ready for a governor focused on lowering costs, raising wages, and fighting corruption, and we’re making sure they hear that message every step of the way.”

Michigan Dem Gov Candidate Jocelyn Benson Tied to SPLC and Soros

Michigan Dem Gov Candidate Jocelyn Benson Tied to SPLC and Soros

Liberty News Nation is a media partner of Michigan News Source. Joe Schaeffer is the author of this article.

The heavy favorite to capture the Democrat nomination for governor of Michigan has been stung by revelations that she sat on the board of the Southern Poverty Law Center when the disgraced “anti-extremism” activist group paid members of SPLC-designated “hate groups” millions of dollars while raising a mountain of cash fighting such bogeymen. It’s not the only time that Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has engaged in efforts funded by George Soros and the dark-money progressive establishment.

“Guess who’s on the board of the Southern Poverty Law Center? Dean Jocelyn Benson,” civil rights attorney Dean Robb gushed on a 2015 Detroit PBS television program. “Yes, I’m very proud,” Benson, then dean of Wayne State University Law School, replied, The Midwesterner reported.

Benson served on the SPLC Board from 2014 to 2019. A grand jury on April 21 indicted the organization on charges of perpetrating a massive fraud. “From 2014 to 2023 … the SPLC funneled more than $3 million from donors to the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, National Socialist Party of America, and other racist extremist groups, according to” the Justice Department, the news site noted.

Benson — Local Leaders Must ‘Learn From Foreign Cities’

As she was starting out her career on the political Left, Benson worked as a 19-year-old operative for SPLC, “infiltrating hate groups on the nonprofit’s behalf,” The Midwesterner added. “There I was,” Benson wrote in her 2025 book The Purposeful Warrior, “just shy of 20 years old, posing as a freelance journalist, meeting with leaders and members of hate groups to gather information on their activities and plans. I attended rallies and meetings, collecting and writing stories for the SPLC’s Intelligence Report.”

The title of Benson’s tome was undoubtedly meant as a snappy slogan to propel her up the next step on the Democrat ladder. But it now serves as a warning to her committed radical nature. More red lights are flaring in her background.

In 2022, while serving as Michigan’s secretary of state, Benson chaired a George Soros-funded task force to help US cities conduct their own foreign policy. The Truman Center for National Policy is a Washington, DC-based NGO think tank dedicated to promoting a core leftist agenda “from climate change to immigration to democratic resilience” at the national security level. In February 2022, the Truman Center announced the creation of “a new Task Force on City and State Diplomacy. Supported by the Open Society Foundations, this effort will address states, cities and other subnational actors as essential participants in foreign policy.”

Open Society Foundations is the flagship “philanthropic” organization run by progressive globalist billionaire Soros. OSF also funded the Southern Poverty Law Center during Benson’s time on the board and as the payments to “hate” actors are said to have occurred.

The Truman task force Benson chaired was dedicated to an agenda long championed by Soros and other prominent powerful globalist organizations such as the World Economic Forum. Truman declared the task force would “deepen domestic engagement on transnational issues, including: climate change, migration, and trade.” Along with Benson, other big-name Democrats co-chairing included Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA).

“Local leaders and their communities seek increasing global engagement: to learn from and partner with foreign cities; advocate for shared values and international commitments; and bring home tangible benefits,” a letter by Benson and her fellow co-chairs included in the task force’s final report asserted.

‘Members of International Peer Networks’

The final report declared the United States must be more connected on the internationalist stage, and cities play an integral role in making that happen: “Such connections are not exclusive to the federal government – they exist between cities, states, and their international counterparts as well.”

It’s important to note here the unabashed references to open alignment – not just diplomacy – with foreign entities.

“Many city and state governments are also members of international peer networks, sharing ideas and advocacy on transnational issues like climate change and gender equity,” Erin Bromaghim, Truman’s visiting senior fellow for city and state diplomacy, wrote in August 2022 in an article for Klaus Schwab’s World Economic Forum published two months after Benson’s task force issued its final report.

Bromaghim and the Benson task force both stressed increased city and state coordination with the US State Department in this push, and with good reason. The Biden administration was running the department in 2022, and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was a committed devotee of the urbanite globalist cause.

‘Shaped in Windowless Conference Rooms Around the World’

“Public health, climate, supply chains, the future of technology, economic security – these are the issues that our diplomats, your diplomats, are working on day in and day out,” Blinken told the US Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting in a highly unusual January 2023 address. “It’s what we mean when we talk about a foreign policy for the middle class. It’s what we mean when we say that the line between foreign and domestic policy is more blurred than it’s ever been.”

Blurred lines and an open admission that US cities have their own “diplomats” abroad setting policy, in line with internationalist ruling bodies such as the United Nations.

“We’re forging new partnerships to bring our closest economic partners and fellow democracies together to try to shape, uphold, and promote common rules of the road to [address the global technology revolution],” Blinken said to the mayors. “A lot of these rules get shaped in windowless conference rooms around the world, sometimes in the United Nations system. That’s where it’s actually happening. That’s where decisions are made that actually affect the way that everyone gets to use this technology.”

This is the worldview that the leading Democrat candidate to be Michigan’s next governor not only espouses but diligently works to bring to fruition. When Jocelyn Benson calls herself a purposeful warrior, it is crucial to realize precisely what her purpose is.

Crowd Roars As El-Sayed Drops An ‘Inshallah’ In Election Night Speech

Crowd Roars As El-Sayed Drops An ‘Inshallah’ In Election Night Speech

Michigan's growing Muslim population was fully displayed during the Democrat's speech.
Amanda Prestigiacomo•Aug 5, 2026

Far-Left Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed received loud cheers during his election night speech in Michigan on Tuesday when he used the Arabic phrase “inshallah,” meaning “God willing,” a phrase commonly used by Muslims.

“I want you to remind them, that if we come through this, when we come through this, inshallah —” El-Sayed said before the crowd erupted. The Democrat U.S. Senate hopeful was referring to people skeptical that he can beat Republican Mike Rogers in a general election.

El-Sayed, a former public health official, is projected to defeat Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), who was viewed as a leading contender by many establishment Democrats, in the closely watched race. The race was finally called by Decision Desk HQ on Wednesday morning, with El-Sayed at 48.9% to Stevens’ 47.5%.

The nominee’s “inshallah” remark, and the crowd’s reaction, highlights the rapid growth of Michigan’s Muslim population over the past several decades, particularly in the Detroit metropolitan area, which is home to one of the largest Arab and Muslim communities in the United States. Immigration from places like Somalia, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and other Muslim-majority nations has transformed the state’s demographics, and subsequently, its politics.

Moreover, if elected to the Senate, El-Sayed would become America’s first Muslim senator, The Daily Wire noted on Wednesday. His parents are both Egyptian immigrants, and his father was a part-time imam. On his wife’s side, his father-in-law is a founding committee member of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), which has close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, according to the federal government.

El-Sayed’s primary victory also shows the Democratic Party’s accelerating shift toward socialism. The Senate candidate ran on far-Left positions, including Medicare for all, abolishing ICE, defunding the police, restructuring the U.S. Supreme Court, and raising taxes on billionaires.

He also aligned himself with radical streamer Hasan Piker. The pair were seen together at social gatherings and events. Piker has praised communist Mao Zedong, who was responsible for millions of deaths and human rights abuses. “Mao Zedong is one of the great leaders of this world,” he once said, adding that he would “never” criticize Mao. Piker has also faced backlash over comments related to Israel and Jews. For example, he frequently uses the phrase, “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” a slogan many view as a call for the elimination of Israel.

Understand … Sayed has no political record to pick at. Roger’s does. He will methodically pick it apart. Rogers is going to have to adjust … real dang quick to address what’s coming his way by the communists.

This is exactly how the commie muzzie prick in NYC got elected. No real political baggage.

Abdul El-Sayed says he's running to help fulfill Bernie Sanders' socialist agenda: “Thank you to my first endorsers. Bernie Sanders, the OG…I just hope that I can help to carry some of that load in the fight for working people and Medicare for all…”

Democrat voters are the dumbest people on earth. They are voting for their own demise.

Abdul El-Sayed — who has famously campaigned with pro-terrorist Hasan Piker — tries to bat away accusations of antisemitism after officially becoming the Democrat candidate for senate in Michigan:

"To my Jewish American sisters and brothers [...] I want you to know that my commitment to your safety, my commitment to Jewish safety, is the same commitment I have to the safety of my own daughters."

REDWAVE PRESS NOTE: El-Sayed FAMOUSLY said about the killing of Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: “I also want to remind you guys that there are a lot of people in Dearborn who are sad today. So, like, I just don’t want to comment on Khamenei at all. Like, I don’t think it’s worth even touching that.”

He is a flaming anti-semite. Taqiyya.

The horde has reached the gates of our Senate. I am shocked at my fellow patriots - have you given your control to the white, liberal woman? They will destroy everything.

All the imported Muslims came and voted for him

Now come the lies.

Horseshit. The death cult he follows, teaches him to lie to further its cause. That is exactly what he is doing. He wants all Jews dead, just like the terrorist organizations he refuses to denounce.

LIES! They will tell you ANYTHING to win your votes! Once they are in power, Jews and non Muslim will be demanded to either convert, pay jizya, or be killed. It is on their Quran!

Don't believe ANYTHING a Muslim says. It's in their religion, and part of their core mission of global dominance to lie and deceit.

He's just trying to appeal to Jewish women. In a predatory way.

His own daughters, whom he’d support being mortally punished if they dishonored his family and were found guilty in a sharia court.

This is Bull. His religion doesn't allow him to love Jews.

Lying through his teeth. You can tell none of that is sincere

That’s what Khamenei said about the non-Muslims and non-shias before he took over. A few years after, he executed thousands in prison.

This Muslim Sayed is practicing taqiyya. Don’t believe him. When Muslims come to power, they take off the mask and turn into Islamists.

Jews have to wear Burkas now?

Which is zero because "women aren't people."

They stone their own daughters to death for showing their hair btw.

More proof that Democrats are stupid.

Considering the fact that it’s okay in his religion to sell off your daughters, I will treat his statement with the contempt it deserves.

Have to ask him about his position on Honor Killings

You know he'll lie about that too.

A wolf in sheep’s clothing he will lie obfuscate and placate anyone to get in the door and then reveal his true intentions and allegiances he will do anything to assume power then you’ll notice all his promises will be forgotten and he will implement his new agenda his true agenda against Christians and Jews alike

Who We Are – Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

Daisy Soros is a prominent philanthropist involved in numerous cultural and educational institutions, while Paul Soros, an engineer who survived communist and Nazi Europe, was deeply committed to democracy and active citizenship. Their shared vision and generosity continue to inspire and empower new generations of American leaders.

The Fellowships, in many ways, reflect Paul and Daisy’s story. Their experience showed them that their unique perspective and that of other immigrants is an asset; through the pursuit of higher education, immigrants and children of immigrants have the potential to impact tremendous change and innovation across society, culture and academia.

So from all shown here … Soros has heavily been involved with getting these two to where we‘re in America’s history. What we saw in NYC … is a snowball rolling downhill with the commies having the momentum.

They aren’t ( except Benson) running on their political records. They will be running on ours.

Get ready...

We're all hopeful that whatever plan Trump had will prevent the cheating. Because there was really only so much we could do from here.

Just listen to El Sayed speak. He's deliberately imitating Obama's speech patterns, delivery, diction, even using the same folksy verbiage. He's been very well groomed for this, indeed. The same voters that bought into Obama will come out in droves for El Sayed. He'll be running for president soon enough.
