El Paso, TX (KTSM — The CEO of Del Sol Hospital in East El Paso confirms that a patient is currently in isolation at the hospital after they presented with 'ebola-like' symptoms. As Newschannel 9 was the first to report, preliminary tests have been performed and the hospital is awaiting the results. At this time, there is no confirmation that the patient has the deadly virus. Test results are expected back soon, as early as tomorrow.

Jacob Cintron, CEO released the following statement to NewsChannel 9 Friday evening “As is probably every hospital in the U.S., we are operating at the strictest possible protocol level so that any patient who presents to our hospital with specific symptoms and has recently traveled to West Africa, or has been in contact with someone who has, is being immediately isolated and receiving additional testing. We do not have any confirmations at this time, but we will let you know if that changes.”

While Del Sol confirms a patient is in isolation and is currently being tested, a spokesperson with the El Paso Department of Health could not corroborate the statements from Del Sol and tells us they had not been notified by the hospital that anyone was being tested for ebola. The hospital also has not released any information about the patient, including whether he or she had recently traveled to West Africa.

Carlos Briano, spokesperson for El Paso Fire and Medical says that the patient was not transported to Del Sol from a EPFD ambulance. He was unable to tell us if Del Sol was still accepting new patients into their emergency room via ambulance Friday night.

At the hospital, it seemed like business as usual Friday night. Visitors and employees are still walking in and out of the hospital freely, we could not spot any employees with protective gear in or around the front entrance. We spoke with one family who had just left the hospital after visiting the patient.

"Nothing unusual. It was pretty quiet, " said Sam Jones. "But today was the first day they asked us if we had been in Africa or if we had been around anybody who had been to Africa or had known anybody. I answered no," he said.
We were unable to confirm whether or not Del Sol was equipped with enough protective gear for their medical staff at this time.

The CDC reminds the public that Ebola is not spread through casual contact. The risk of an outbreak in the U.S. is very low. However, there are also ways you can protect yourself from the spread of the virus.

  • Wash hands frequently or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid contact with blood and body fluids of any person, particularly someone who is sick.
  • Do not handle items that may have come in contact with an infected person’s blood or body fluids.
  • Do not touch the body of someone who has died from Ebola.
  • Do not touch bats and nonhuman primates or their blood and fluids and do not touch or eat raw meat prepared from these animals.
  • Avoid hospitals in West Africa where Ebola patients are being treated. The U.S. Embassy or consulate is often able to provide advice on medical facilities.
  • Seek medical care immediately if you develop fever (temperature of 100.4°F/ 38.0°C or higher) and any of the other following symptoms: headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, or unexplained bruising or bleeding.
  • Limit your contact with other people until and when you go to the doctor. Do not travel anywhere else besides a healthcare facility.
Symptoms of the ebola virus are similar to those produced by other hemorrhagic fever viruses and include fever, malaise, reddened eyes, weakness, joint pain, muscle pain, headache, nauseah, vomiting, and diarrhea. Additional ebola symptoms include a loss of appetite and often stomach pains.

We will continue to follow this developing story and will update the public as soon as Del Sol releases additional information.
