La Palma prepares the evacuation protocols: the operation is prepared for a hypothetical eruption

Institutions analyze action plans to avoid risks to the populatio

15 Sep 2021 - 12:00 Updated 11:53
The mayor of El Paso, Sergio Rodríguez, has confirmed in COPE that the island and regional institutions are working to coordinate and update the protocol that would have to be activated in the event of a volcanic eruption on La Palma.

"The meeting that took place yesterday was to be prepared in all areas, since we have to locate and be clear about the evacuation routes we need to be able to get our neighbors out . In addition, we must know the means we have. No there is no operation underway, but we must have at hand the main questions regarding equipment, generators and machinery. The current situation requires it and, although it is unlikely, we must have everything ready, "he explained.

In this same sense, he has pointed out that the population of his municipality is highly sensitized, especially in the neighborhoods where most of the tremors of the seismic swarm that began last Saturday are being registered.

"In Jedey and Las Manchas they are very aware and worried because we have just come out of the August fire, therefore, it is essential that the regional government and the Cabildo have local administrations to offer citizens clear and concise information , always avoiding the alarmism. And, if the moment comes, all the safety indications for the evacuation would be transferred, "he concluded.

THE SEISMIC SWARM CONTINUES
A new earthquake of magnitude 3.2 has been located at 10.25 am this Wednesday at a depth of 7 kilometers in the municipality of El Paso, reported the National Geographic Institute (IGN).

Dear LORD,

If it's Your will that she blows and a mega-tsunami is to hit the US, can you please make sure it COMPLETELY wipes out DC and NYC?

Thanks,

Careful what you pray for. That's a lot of innocent blood on your hands if He grants your prayer. I'd be pretty scared at this point in End Times to actually pray for the death of others, considering you will need to come face to face with him when your time comes to account for it. Unless of course, you don't really believe in God. Then what will you do if it turns out you were wrong?

This^^^ And if this volcano rips loose in the worse case scenario the carnage will be unbelievable here in the states... and would present an excellent opportunity for the UN to step in and try to take control. Ummm yeah, pray it doesn't erupt and it's just having a serious case of gas.

Here is a more scientific approach from Diamond. And yes, potentially an earthquake leading to 500 million TONS of rock sliding into the Atlantic Ocean would be a disaster.

There is an example in an Alaskan Bay where something like that happened and they can still see the rings on 200 plus feet around the bay, like a bathtub with a ring around the bathtub.

Run time is 15 minutes

^^ Man, that's some doom right there. Of course, I don't know about that guy's credentials, but that was sobering. However, I don't see how he can compare this to the Japan Tsunami in 2011 since I don't recall them getting hit with a 100 ft wave.

Does anyone know if this is supposed to wrap around Florida and hit the AL/LA/TX coasts?

You get to pray for the death of evil people like Sodom and Gommarah, los angeles, san francisco DC and NYC. I have no issue with that.

The people on la palma know the score so it is on them. 2 weeks nearly of earth quake swarms and they haven't left? Again, that's on them too.
The USA is a truly vile place now, TOTALLY EVIL AT THIS POINT, or at least one half is . God HATES evil, so why wouldn't disaster be rolling over CONUS.
Lust = Sin and Sin = Death.

There were a few “good“ people on Sodom, but not enough to save the city. Lot couldn’t scrape together even just ten. Fortunately for him, Abraham pleaded for the Lord to spare the city, so the angels snatched Lot and his family from certain destruction. Might be a lesson for us to pray for God to have mercy on our own cities...

Is this the same volcano scenario that would have the tsunami hit the upper east coast, go into the Great Lakes, and make the Mississippi expand outward? or something like that.

Not sure to be honest, I know more 5han a dozen different scenarios have been gamed. I think since the Indonesian and Fukushima quakes they now have more data to work from as far as creating additional scenarios.

Thank you MtSilverback. I AM in that lot. Both husband and I are out of work/underemployed and coming precariously close to exhausting our emergency fund. He can't find much above minimum wage The last three years, we lost 75% of our total household income. We can't really afford to vacate right now. Thank God for Dave Ramsey, because we were already debt-free including the house, and had that emergency fund. If we have time, we run for the hills and deal with it afterwards, if there is time.

If it goes off and it comes, then it comes. If I die, I die, I know where I am going.

At least a small eruption is looking more and more likely, that doesn't mean it will cause a giant tsunami. It could but it has erupted before and not done so. Still this is something to watch for the next few weeks.

Volcano alert on the Canary Islands' La Palma after almost a THOUSAND earthquakes are detected in five days around La Cumbre Vieja after it last erupted 50 years ago
  • A surge of seismic activity and magma displacements has been registered
  • The strongest tremor of the current earthquake swarm has had a 3.4 magnitude

Fears are growing that a volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands could erupt after 1,000 earthquakes were registered on the island in the past five days.

Experts have noticed an upsurge in seismic activity and magma displacements under the volcanic ridge of La Cumbre Vieja on the popular tourist hotspot, which has a population of 85.000.

Spain's National Geographic Institute has detected 4,222 tremors in a so-called "earthquake swarm" in the Cumbre Vieja national park, around the Teneguia volcano in the far south of the island.

There have been more than a thousand earthquakes on the island since Saturday and the Canary Island's regional government on Tuesday put the island on a yellow alert for an eruption, the second of a four-level alert system.

The Spanish government's office in the Atlantic archipelago said the situation 'could change quickly in the short term' but stressed there was 'no clear evidence that suggested an eruption was imminent'.

The strongest tremor of the latest earthquake swarm has had a magnitude of 3.4, the Involcan vulcanology institute said.
More than 11 million cubic metres (388 million cubic feet)of magma have seeped into Cumbre Vieja in recent days, swelling the peak by around 6 centimetres, the Volcanic Institute of the Canaries said.

Rising sharply out of the Atlantic around 100 kilometres to the west of southern Morocco, the Canary Islands are home to Spain's most active and best known volcanoes, including Teide in Tenerife and Timanfaya in Lanzarote.

Teneguia last erupted in 1971 - the last surface eruption to occur in Spain - while a volcano off the tiny island of El Hierro erupted underwater in 2011.

An earthquake swarm is a sequence of seismic events occurring in one place within a relatively short period of time.
'An intensification of the type of seismic activity in the coming days cannot be ruled out,' the institute said.

The ridge of the volcano covers the southern two-thirds of the small island and the yellow alert warning affects four municipalities including Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso and El Mazo.

Cumbre Vieja is an active although dormant volcanic ridge in the south of La Palma that has erupted twice in the 20th century, first in 1949 then in 1971 when it spat lava for three weeks.

A 2001 research article claimed a change in the eruptive activity of Cumbre Vieja volcano and a fracture on the volcano that formed during the 1949 eruption may be the prelude to a giant ridge collapse.

Authors Steven N Ward and Simon Day estimated such a collapse could cause tsunamis across the entire North Atlantic and severely impact countries as far away as North America.

The authorities had on Tuesday raised the alert level from green to yellow, the second of four levels, in certain areas around the volcano.

It means civil protection officials must inform the public 'to take precautions ahead of a possible volcanic eruption', the Pevolca emergency plan says.

Involcan said all of the quakes had been shallow, and a 'significant ground deformation' as a result of 'a small volume' of new magma flowing into the reservoir underneath the volcano, which amounted to 11 million cubic metres, swelling the peak by around 6 centimetres.

'Undoubtedly the current seismic swarm represents a significant change in the activity of the Cumbre Vieja volcano and is related to a process of magmatic intrusion beneath the island of La Palma,' it said.

In 2018, a seismic swarm of 270 mini-earthquakes was recorded in the Canary Islands over a 10-day period, leading to concerns Tenerife's Mount Teide was due to erupt.

The largest of these reached a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale around 22 miles from Puerto La Luz, Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

But no eruption occurred and scientists quelled fears, saying the tremors were part of the islands' normal seismic activity.
Professor Mike Burton, chair in volcanology at the University of Manchester, told MailOnline at the time: 'There's plenty of tectonic seismicity in the Canary Islands due to plate motion which doesn't directly produce volcanic activity, and there are some earthquake locations to the southeast of Tenerife which are consistent with this.

'Before an eruption on Tenerife or any of the other Canary Islands there would be clear precursory signals in seismicity, gas and ground deformation. These are not such signals.'

Earthquake swarm triggers volcano alert on Spain's La Palma
2 hrs ago

MADRID (Reuters) - Authorities on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma have warned that a sudden increase in seismic activity could herald a volcanic eruption in the coming days or weeks.
Spain's National Geographic Institute has detected 4,222 tremors in a so-called "earthquake swarm" in the Cumbre Vieja national park, around the Teneguia volcano in the far south of the island.
As the quakes intensified and moved closer to the surface, the Canary Island's regional government on Tuesday put the island on a yellow alert for an eruption, the second of a four-level alert system.
It said on Thursday there was no clear evidence for an immediate eruption, though warned the situation could evolve rapidly.

"More intense earthquakes are expected in the coming days," it said in a statement.
More than 11 million cubic metres (388 million cubic feet)of magma have seeped into Cumbre Vieja in recent days, swelling the peak by around 6 centimetres, the Volcanic Institute of the Canaries said on Thursday.
Rising sharply out of the Atlantic around 100 kilometres to the west of southern Morocco, the Canary Islands are home to Spain's most active and best known volcanoes, including Teide in Tenerife and Timanfaya in Lanzarote.

What to do if an eruption occurs on La Palma?
The seismic swarm has slowed down in recent hours

La Palma's seismic swarm has slowed down significantly since last midnight, with a drastic reduction in the number of tremors located by the National Geographic Institute.
The Pevolca scientific committee plans to meet this morning to continue analyzing the evolution of the phenomenon and the change in behavior that the indicators are showing this Thursday.
The director of the Geographical Institute in the Canary Islands, María José Blanco, explained to Efe in the last hours that it must be taken into account that not all injections of magmatic material have to end in an eruption on the surface, and in fact most do not reach it .
However, María José Blanco has indicated that the increase in the deformation of the ground of 1.5 centimeters, which has been detected since Monday, suggests that it is a process with very fast dynamics, which is quite energetic.
WHAT TO DO IF AN EARTHQUAKE OCCURS
The National Geographic Institute advises the population to follow basic safety recommendations in the event of an earthquake of great intensity to avoid risks.
Thus, inside a building, it is convenient to stand under a table and cover your head with your hands. Also, keep away from windows, furniture or other objects that can fall or break causing damage.
Outdoors, it is advisable to stay away from utility poles and cables, walls or buildings that can collapse and fall.
Inside a vehicle, stop in a safe place, turn on the hazard lights, and remain still until the shaking ends.
WHAT TO DO IF AN EVACUATION OCCURS
Experts recall the importance of having a kit that includes basic medications such as disinfectants, gauze, antiseptics, and scissors. Flashlights, a radio, spare batteries, and a whistle should also be handy.
In addition, it is recommended to carry essential documents, bottled water and non-perishable food.
Before leaving home, we would have to close the stopcocks, the gas keys and check the plugs in our home.
