CRIME Dread Head Cowboy's horse may need to be euthanized after Dan Ryan protest

They should put a saddle on this ****** and whip him as he runs barefoot for 7 miles down a freeway. If he slows beat him harder. Beat him till he lays there in a puddle of blood and dies. Then beat him some more.

CHICAGO - Chicago’s “Dread Head Cowboy” rode his horse to exhaustion — and narrowly close to death — while protesting gun violence against children on the Dan Ryan Expressway earlier this week, Cook County prosecutors said.

The horse will never ride again and may need to be euthanized, Assistant State’s Attorney Kevin Deboni said Wednesday, adding that one veterinarian compared Adam Hollingsworth’s actions to “forcing an 80-year-old woman to run a full marathon.”

Authorities found the horse collapsed on the pavement near 95th Street Monday, overheated, dehydrated, bleeding from the hooves, and with eyes so dilated they resembled “cartoon eyes,” Deboni said. The horse, coerced to run seven miles without horseshoes, also had sores beneath its saddle, which wasn’t properly padded, the prosecutor said.Authorities found the horse collapsed on the pavement near 95th Street Monday, overheated, dehydrated, bleeding from the hooves, and with eyes so dilated they resembled “cartoon eyes,” Deboni said. The horse, coerced to run seven miles without horseshoes, also had sores beneath its saddle, which wasn’t properly padded, the prosecutor said.

After differentiating the well-intentioned protest to the horse’s alleged poor treatment, Judge David Navarro ordered Hollingsworth, 33, held on $25,000 bail for animal cruelty.

“The horse doesn’t know it was part of a protest,” the judge said. “The horse only knows how it was treated. And … it appears that treatment was criminal.”

Hollingsworth’s protest began about 4:30 p.m. Monday as he galloped into the southbound lanes at 35th Street. Holding back traffic as police cars and motorcycles tailed him, he eventually exited at 95th Street.

The horse trotted at times, but was galloping for most of the ride, Deboni said. When the horse slowed down, most likely from exhaustion, Hollingsworth allegedly kicked and whipped it.

Hollingsworth, known for his civic activism, broadcast his protest on Facebook Live, saying “I shut down the Dan Ryan! Kids lives matter!”

But Deboni claimed that, in another video posted June 11, Hollingsworth said he would “ride his horse until it dies.”

The horse, in critical condition, continues to collapse during treatment, and is never expected to stabilize, Deboni said.

Chicago Animal Care and Control officials also said the horse was so battered, it would’ve died if it hadn’t been treated immediately.

“Euthanasia may be utilized for humane reasons due to the suffering the animal will likely endure for the rest of its life,” Deboni said.

Hollingsworth’s lawyer said his client’s protest was planned and that motorcycles were used to protect the horse from cars. Saddle sores are common for horses and not all riders believe horses need horseshoes on the pavement, the defense attorney argued.

Hollingsworth met with police earlier this month about the Dan Ryan protest, but his request was denied since authorities said it was dangerous and illegal, Illinois State Police said.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s office called Monday’s incident a “stunt” that endangered the horse and others. “There is a right way and a wrong way to call attention to issues of great importance and this stunt was decidedly the very wrong way,” the mayor’s office said.

Earlier this year, Lightfoot teamed up with Hollingsworth and his horse to promote the U.S. Census in South and West Side wards.

In addition to animal cruelty, a felony, Hollingsworth has also been charged with several misdemeanors: reckless conduct, disobeying a police officer, obstructing traffic and criminal trespass to state supported property.

On Tuesday, Father Michael Pfleger and activist Ja’Mal Green called for authorities to drop charges against Hollingsworth. However, Pfleger did say, “I trusted that he knew what was best for the horse. If the horse was injured in any way, obviously, I don’t want that. I’m sorry about that.”

Hollingsworth is expected back in court Sept. 30.

How did I know that this was a black guy?

How could anyone beat and whip such a beautiful, regal creature? It makes me very angry.

I am so tired of seeing the constant upset BLM and their ilk are inflicting.

You know, it SEEMS like (and I hate to even type this) that white European stock is the only race that doesn't cause more trouble than its worth. A brief review:

Blacks - death and destruction wherever they go
Hispanics - breed like rabbits and overrun decent countries and turn them into shit-holes
Chinese - Cause world pandemics by eating disgusting things
Indians - Take far too many high-paying jobs via incompetent people

This just off the top of my head and out of much frustration.

Saddle sores are a sign of an abused horse and/or an ignorant owner.

A road acts like sandpaper on a horse's hooves. Imagine cutting your fingernails to the quick and then continuing to file them down. That's what the horse had to endure.

The pounding of trotting and galloping on road without any shoes is criminal. Not to mention the added weight pounding on his back and beating him. I imagine that the bones were damaged as well as the hooves. Look up ringbone in horses. No cure, lots of pain and all preventable. Much as I hate the idea, euthanasia may be the most merciful call for the horse.

IMHO the criminal should face legal ramifications for this horse's cruel and inhumane treatment.

Chicago’s Dreadhead Cowboy, a mainstay of Black Lives Matter protests, rides again — this time to support full participation in the US Census

Chicago’s Dreadhead Cowboy has taken on a new cause.

Already a horseback-riding sensation at Chicago-area Black Lives Matters protests, where he’s braved tear gas and befriended police, and a favorite in majority Black neighborhoods, where he rides to promote his dream of a stable in the central city, the cowboy recently got a pitch from the office of Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

“They basically said, ‘We’re on the same team, so why not help each other?‘” he said.

So starting this week, the Dreadhead Cowboy, otherwise known as Adam Hollingsworth, is riding with a green and black Census 2020 flag, a Census 2020 mask and a message for Chicagoans: If you want better funding for your schools and your community, if you want to have your voice heard, take a few minutes and fill out your census survey.

Hollingsworth, 33, a former boxer and exotic dancer, said he filled out the census survey for the first time this year, and it only took him a few minutes.

“It felt like I had a purpose when I filled it out,” he said.

During a visit to Garfield Park on Tuesday, he said that many people already know of his new mission.

“They’re basically telling me as soon as they see me: ‘We did our census. You ain’t gotta worry about it,‘” he said with a chuckle.

People take photos of him and his horse, he said, and as usual, he pauses to give kids a chance to ride. Hollingsworth keeps his horses in the south suburbs and trucks them into Chicago for rides through city streets. Fans have compared him to Batman and lauded him for a June peacekeeping trip into the Latino Little Village neighborhood to defuse tensions over fears of looting by Black protesters. The cowboy got a very warm reception from Little Village.

The mayor’s office confirmed the arrangement with Hollingsworth, with a spokesperson saying via email that Hollingsworth will be visiting neighborhoods where he is a trusted voice, including East and West Garfield Park, Washington Park, Woodlawn, Englewood, West Englewood, Greater Grand Crossing, North and South Lawndale, and Back of the Yards.

Chicago Portrait: The Dreadhead Cowboy

There’s a cowboy riding through Chicago’s South and West Side neighborhoods, introducing residents young and old to what is likely an unfamiliar animal — at least on their residential streets: horses.
Chicagoan Adam Hollingsworth, better known as the Dreadhead Cowboy, owns five horses in Will County that he brings into the city for horseback-riding lessons and casual introductions throughout Chicago communities.
“If I’m going to call myself a cowboy,” said Hollingsworth, 33. “I gotta put the hood in it, so I put the ‘Dreadhead Cowboy.’ So basically, I’m from the hood and I’m a cowboy.”
Hollingsworth’s own introduction to horses came four years ago, thanks to his uncle Eddie Thomas, who owns several in Crete, about 40 miles south of Chicago.
Hollingsworth purchased his first horse two years ago and has been riding regularly since.
“I done fell in love with horses so much, I done bought more horses than my uncle,” Hollingsworth said. “So I keep my horses out there with him; I love them.”
Prior to Illinois’ COVID-19 shutdown, Hollingsworth, a father of four, had worked as an exotic dancer since 2010.
But after discovering a love of horses and the attention brought by his saddled travels through the city, Hollingsworth said he plans to retire from dancing and focus full-time on horseback riding and demonstrations through Chicago’s underserved communities and, eventually, beyond.

“My goal is to give back to the community and then after I do that in the inner city and I accomplish my goal here, I’m gonna branch off and start a tour through the Midwest,” Hollingsworth said. “I’m gonna hit seven states in the Midwest and hit the inner city in every state.”
To realize his intercity horseback tour, Hollingsworth started a GoFundMe page for supplies, upkeep and gas money.

WTTW News followed Hollingsworth – and his 13-year-old horse Prince – through his neighborhood of Woodlawn on Chicago’s South Side.

I have no idea who this guy is, but it doesn't look like he can ride for shit and probably knows less about taking care of a horse. If those vids taken of the horse riderless and breathing heavy were post-ride, well at least the horse was standing which is a good sign. There MAY be a bit of media drama involved here....they probably know even less about horses than Cowboy Dave or whatever the hell he calls himself. Pavement can be a bitch on horses, but shoeless is less slippery unless special shoes or studs are used. I don't doubt the horse was sore afterward if he cantered him 7 miles. Get out the bute and the IV saline. (BTW...ya ought to see what the Amish expect THEIR horses to do for mileage on pavement at a real good clip...granted, they aren't carrying a rider - just pulling an Amish ugly-wagon).

Stupid stunt and the guy ought to be slapped.

No shoes - on pavement?

Shoes were INVENTED for pavement.

I hope he spends some time behind bars - and finds out what it is like to be "ridden."

The convict population is NOT favorable to Pedophilia and Child Abuse. Those two expect a challenging existence behind bars. One imagines Animal Abuse is kind of in that same mindset?

One hopes anyway. This one particularly.

Agree he's a moron, but honestly... "forcing an 80 year old woman to run a full marathon?"... how old IS this horse, anyway? It doesn't appear to be old, and looks to be in decent condition... good muscle tone, nice shine to it's coat. 7 miles at a canter (not a dead run) is *not* overdoing it for an animal which has been conditioned for it.

Also... where are the signs of "severe bleeding"? He's got pure white front legs... I see no blood, no bandage, and he's standing square on both front legs.

My biggest concern in terms of potential long term injury is the potential for laminitis... founder. "Road founder" can absolutely be caused by the concussion of the hooves on the pavement, especially in an animal which hasn't been conditioned to the work.

But while I find his stunt to be stupid, and suspect he doesn't know enough about horses (riding without a saddle pad is idiotic, especially at the speed and distance he was), from the little I can see of the animal at the end of the video, I think there is some real hyperbole being employed by the SPCA people. I'm wondering if they are some of the extreme animal rights type who believe that any sort of use (riding or driving horses, using dogs for hunting, etc) is "abuse"?

I've seen horses who really WERE in "critical condition" due to overwork in extreme heat, or the one who broke loose from an Amish buggy after being chased by dogs, and who galloped at top speed (shedding buggy parts as she ran) for 8 miles until I was able to pull my car in front of her and eventually get her stopped... the horse in the vid looks very good in comparison.

The video I saw was of a horse at a dead run on the highway. No way is it ok if he ran him that way for 7 miles. If he trotted or walked most of the way sure no problem but not what I saw. perhaps the article is alarmest. I hope so.

∆∆∆∆∆

Strangely enough the video on the link now is different than what I originally posted. Weird!

This video shows the horse trotting also and looking ok at the end. I'm glad.

Cantering a horse for 7 miles without risking damage requires a level of conditioning that most would not be capable of. Conditioning is a science, and knowledge of anatomy and physiology, nutrition and how to execute the process is pretty advanced for the average horse owner. Yes, a horse could accidentally be well conditioned to do so, as in no knowledge or plan, but enough hours out there working that the condition is built organically, but I doubt this guy was doing the type of riding that would build it. I am positive he does not have the know how to do it on purpose. Even if the horse ends up ok, it was abuse.

The lack of shoes is tricky. Some horses can't walk in sand without shoes, others can do anything without them. Each horse is an individual, with hooves that vary genetically and from a maintenance standpoint. Even the best feet will wear down with long distances on the wrong ground. Again, hooves and legs can be conditioned to any type of ground, but I doubt this horses were. Perhaps he was fine barefoot in his regular routine, but the wear of the pavement for that distance can do tremendous damage. The concern of wearing the hoof wall or the sole through the insensitive tissue and into the sensitive tissue, namely the laminae, is a real concern.

Additionally, as Summerthyme said, laminitis, and perhaps ultimately founder, can be caused by concussion of this type. That is a serious concern, and potentially life threatening. Conditions like ringbone are degenerative, arthritic conditions, unlikely to develop from one event, but it could certainly start the cycle. I would be most worried about non-articular ringbone, which is less serious than articular, but easier to develop. Stress fractures, bone bruising or tearing / swelling of the periosteum, all possible with this type of exertion, can certainly start that calcification process. These are just issues with the pavement. There is also the risk of tendon and ligament damage that would be due to exertion for which they are unconditioned, regardless of the ground. An then there is cardio vascular fitness and muscular strength and fitness, or lack thereof.

At the end of the day, this guy is no horseman and clearly has neither understanding of, nor compassion and empathy for, the needs of an animal and how to care for them properly and fairly. Sadly, far too many horse owners don't. This guy has clearly abused this horse. Yes, it looks in good weight, and previous pictures showed him looking reasonably well cared for, but what he asked of this horse tells the true story.

One photo I saw showed a bloody foot that looked like the horse had just interfered (stepped on his own foot). Not life-threatening. But yes, few horses could run that far without conditioning, without sustaining serious health issues.

I predict George Soros will pay the $25K, the "Cowboy" will be released to his own recognizance, the horse will be euthanized if for no other reason than the State does not have the means or the interest to get tangled in an Ownership lawsuit prompted by Soros Lawyers, and the "Cowboy" will be back on the street in a "donated" Democratic elite horse within a week.

And probably be given $100K in "GoFundme" money for his trouble.

I give no quarter to people that mis-treat animals --especially dogs and horses
I could inflict much pain upon him and feel no remorse

ETA --after reading the OP again I would submit that the lawyer needs his ass whipped too
But first, he needs to be run full tilt and barefoot along the same path as he took the horse until he drops from exhaustion. Then he should be horsewhipped and euthanized for abusing that beautiful horse.

saddle sores are only common with ill fitted, poorly fitted tack. Shoes are not always needed, but on pavement, a special shoe is, and then you NEVER canter or gallop a horse on pavement. Stupid idiot rider.
