Dog Skunked

I'm sure this isn't the first time this has come up but I couldn't find a post. Too bad we can't do a search

My dog came home skunked last night. Poor thing couldn't figure out why he had to sleep outside.
Before I go buy every known product to mankind I figured you all would have the best advice. Thanks in advance.

I've only had one time I had to deskunk a dog. My Big Ben put his nose where it ought not to go and Ms Skunk got him in the mouth. :sht:
I fed him ripe cherry tomatoes one after the other. He wasn't sure about the first one but I think it must of helped with the horrid taste as he just kept eating them. He had no smell left to him after he ate a pound or two and by morning was fine.
So, I have to recommend tomato juice. I was so glad on that camping trip I'd packed a big big bag of tomatoes. ;)

Thanks for letting me know the search engine was working again, I hadn't even tried it. There were great ideas there. We tried the tomato juice and his regular shampoo. He still smelled but we let him stay in his kennel instead of outside.

dog skunked

My vet a few years ago said to mix 1 quart peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 tablespoon liquid soap. Shampoo well and rinse really, really well. I really don't know how effective this shampoo mix is, as my dog hasn't tangled with any skunks (yet). This was one of my what if questions I'm alway asking.

Actually, I think you just sponge on that solution, and let it air dry. We have used it and it kills the skunk aroma right away. Be careful around eyes and ears. You could probably get by with less dish soap, as I think its purpose is to make the solution penetrate the animal's coat.

enjoy!

The peroxide-baking soda-dish detergent works very well. Use it like you would use any shampoo. The best dish detergent to use is Dawn because it is so good at degreasing. Do not leave this on the dog.

I have used this mixture on many dogs and have always been thrilled with the results.
