CHAT Do you suppose it is the new existence of the Net that is taking our society down?

People who think about such stuff are of the opinion that it took nearly 400 years for the human mind to fully utilize that great tech leap: printing. Already after 200 years it had a tremendous impact on civil society: the Protestant Reformation and the subsequent religious wars. Without printing it is quite likely Martin Luther would have had little effect.

It took near 400 years for it to impact into the economic Industrial Revolution. And we have been living with that until recently.

When the Net first surfaced, I told my kids it might have a fatal flaw for society. It will allow the crazies to find and reinforce each other. And I think we are seeing that as society is slowly being rent apart by numerous factions that did not particularly exist in power until recently. Consequently the Weak have been strengthened while the Strong have been weakened into impotence.

The short term result IMO will be anarchy. I am not sure there will be a long term result. We don't have 400 years to adjust to the new tech.

We are doomed.

Not really the net, as those problems were always with us. The net just makes it so you don't get punched in the nose.

It's a double-edged sword. Without the net, we'd have to rely on network news. With it, we can disseminate the truth. Nurses taking videos of being fired, funeral home directors getting the word out about deaths, etc.

The same net that destroys civilization could strengthen it, IF it were driven that way. The net is just a tool. It has no agency. Only the PEOPLE who use it do.
In the 1950s, the role of the FCC was expanded to include TELEVISION. Nobody at that time had any conception of what TV would become in "solidifying" the social strata.

Archie Bunker (1970s) made fun of the social strata. But everyone took it in stride because by then because of television all had all been exposed to a wider more diverse view of strata - and they still had choices of what strata to watch, or make fun of.

But with the formation of the Internet in the mid 90s, the role of the FCC in Broadcast TV seemed to dwindle. And the Internet was doing pretty well without any real government supervision.

And it went along pretty well until about 2010. About then the Internet had itself "solidified" with major players/owners of Internet turf becoming established. Also thanks to the Internet the invention "Social Media." Another informational turf for the major players/owners to own and control.

But suddenly the major players/owners not only wanted to play and own, they wanted to own more - specifically YOU. They have now reached the point of absolute power (corrupts absolutely.)

Still the FCC has not interceded. Section 230 laws were passed specifically to keep the Fed out of the Social Media picture and keep the major players/owner IN. The laws are the way they are because the major players/owners want them this way.

So instead of an unbiased government regulator keeping Broadcast Media of all kinds in line, you have a biased private regulator in cahoots with government keeping Internet Media in line and keeping YOU in line too since you too can be Internet Media.

So far the private major regulators have not kept me in line and corralled me in. I'm sure there are humans who tune in to see what the "Horse Influencer" has to say on any particular day. So I too am Internet Media - so far still being given run of my Internet Paddock.

Be careful where you place your feet!

It is that evil has reached an apex. It has come into its own.

The internet is merely a tool and can be used by good or evil only evil does not play by the rules.

It has incredible possibilities for good. The combined knowledge of mankind going back for centuries is now at anyone's fingertips.

But, as with all things, man found a way to muck it up for evil almost immediately. Porn, Dark web, social media... All driver's of evil and with mankind's proclivity towards evil I would have to say, "Yes, the internet *IS* the driving force behind western societies collapse and ultimate destruction."

People can't be bothered with learning something new and bettering themselves when they are more worried about dopamine hits generated by "likes" for their asinine dances and challenges.

It's pathetic and we will get exactly what we deserve.

I am, actually, glad to see the Greatest Generation pass into the next world.

What can they be thinking about the state of the world?

People probably said the same thing about the automobile--it would allow the crazies to find each other and reinforce each other--when they got done saying it about the printing press.

When the hot wet fart arrives from the sun, the shit will cover the world in darkness once again.

For a time man will hunt man and chaos and carnage will be the norm.

The few survivors will start over, slowly at first and then in 8 to 12,000 years they will be right back ...here.

If......there are any survivors.

With all of the chemical, nuclear, pesticides...all of this man made hell being released upon the world in the cataclysm...nothing may survive..

The new moon or mars.

The net in general? No... The algorithms being used by social media causing echo chambers? That....yeah...i think so. Knowledge is always a good thing but with things like tiktok, facebook, and twitter algorithmically showing you what it thinks you want to see...you're never seeing OTHER information. Creates echo chambers that just get more and more extreme...thus...society fractures
