TECH Disposable Phones

I'm hunting for a disposable phone just for phone calls.
I may use it a week of 5 months, I'm not sure.

Whats on the market and cheap?
I may buy minutes if I keep it for a few months.
Expected monthly use is 15 minutes max.
Vid capture would be a plus but not needed.

My suggestion would be to get a phone that works on the Verizon network.
These can be had cheap on craigslist, ebay, etc. Or even free if you know someone that may have one laying around.

Then activate it on Page Plus using Kitty Wireless:
http://www.kittywireless.com/pageplus/activation.html

Activation is FREE

I prefer to buy minutes from Calling Mart:
http://www.callingmart.com/

Choose the "Page Plus refill - Load to phone"

You can buy 100 minutes for $10 and pay with Credit Card or PayPal. (No taxes, no other fees)

The only thing you have to do to keep the phone active is buy minutes every 120 days.

This gives you a phone that will cost $30 a year to keep active.

Since your monthly usage is so low, this will be your cheapest option.
A comparable Tracfone plan will cost you $30 for 120 minutes, and expires in 90 days instead of 120.

Tracfone - 120 minutes/ 3 Months = $120/year
Page Plus - 100 minutes/ 4 Months = $30/year

Go to the Tracfone website and punch in your zip code and you'll get a list of telephones and features. Should have several phones to choose from right around $20 with 10 minutes of airtime and then just buy whatever size airtime card you want and your ready to roll.

I've had a TracFone flip phone as my back up cell phone for years. So far it has been very reliable.

Tracfone. Very reliable and super cheap (Dollar General sometimes has them for as little as $5---you read that right---that and some minutes and you are good to go.

Temporary while you're between phones or . . . ? If you're looking for something in the category of burner phones

  • buy the cheapest phone you can find with cash
  • don't have your other phone with you when you're using it. Correlation between devices/users due to repeated proximity of device (don't forget the phone in your friend's pocket) or any common usage -- same numbers called from both phones -- is possible, is done, and is stored)
  • make your call and throw it out
  • repeat

Of course, using burner phones in support of illegal activity is wrong, you are bad, and it is completely not what I am commenting on. Rather, my bullet list above is in support of privacy advocates.

As a retired telecommunications tech, I still prefer my cheap tracfone. They have them with bells and whistles now very cheap if you want more. Mine does vids, pics, text, calls and that's all I want (though I could sign up for data, call forward, vmail, etc). Cost $19.00 to buy it, but there are much cheaper ones.

What I really like is no monthly bills. I buy 'time' every 2 years when I run out of minutes. So, about $50.00 per year total for everything - no limit to text (cheaper than voice), pictures, long distance. etc.

I've had this one about 3 years, the battery still holds a good charge (recharge about every 10 days or so).

Got a bottom of the line tracfone that makes calls and takes pics on sale for $4.99 at City Market/Kroger. Probably that cheap at WalMart too.

Tracphone. I had one few years ago when I was having trouble with one of Verizon's fancy phones. I liked the idea that I could buy it at the Dollar Store, buy a minutes card also, activate from the phone itself.. all for cash. My name was never associated with the number.I dont know if it still works that way, but I have considered another, JIC

I was at Walmart today and there was a guy there walking around trying to
sign up people for a free phone. You're eligible if you are on Medicare or Medicaid
Also if you have a SNAP card. You get 500 minutes a month and free phone and
more minutes monthly. Some folks call these Obama phones but
Hey it's free. A relative signed up and will get it I. The mail in about
A week.

I've had a Tracphone for years, works just fine for me. I'm not into texting, though you can with a Tracphone. Since you can't find payphones anymore this is probably just the next step up. I think I paid $120 for the service for 1 year and buy 800 minutes about $40 which carryover if you don't use them during you service year. Phone itself was only about $30.
