…… Disability Question

I was asked this question a few minutes ago by my bishop, who is trying to help a family whose primary breadwinner was severely injured a few months back:

When applying for food stamps in Tennessee, are monthly disability payments from a PRIVATE insurance company (not in any way connected to Social Security or .gov) considered "income" to count against you in qualifying?

What about when trying to get a sliding scale fee reduction at a community health clinic that gets substantial federal funding to keep fees low for the working poor?

The disability payments will be considered in the eligibility determination process for Food Stamps. The size of the household and certain household expenses will also be considered. At least that's how it used to be...

In both cases, FS and the clinic, the family should request and complete the applications and submit them for consideration.

Yeah they will. They will prolly have to give banks statements but if they don't use direct deposit the $$ won't reflect on the astaewment then it is up to them to decide what they say or do not say in order to get assistance.

As in revenue, NO it is not income, disability insurance is compensation for injury, illness or disease. At least here in Louisiana this is all based on correct terminology so be very careful and look up the definitions. Income and insurance benefits are not the same thing.

Yes Barry, here in TN it is counted as income when applying for FS or any other .gov assistance when it is from a private source such as an insurance company. Not sure about the clinic though as my doc chose to work out a payment scale for me instead of giving me up as a patient.
