DHS imposes new restrictions on travelers from Ebola-stricken countries

The Obama administration announced Tuesday that all U.S.-bound travelers from three Ebola-stricken African countries will be required to fly into one of five airports that are conducting additional screening.

The change comes as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle call for a travel ban from those countries -- Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. While administration officials continue to resist that step, the Department of Homeland Security said the new restrictions will go into effect starting Wednesday.

The change means all travelers from those three countries will have to arrive at one of the five designated airports: New York's JFK, Newark, Dulles, Atlanta and Chicago.

DHS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention already have implemented "enhanced screening measures" at those five airports.

I'd think this sufficient, but, you know, TSA. If they were required to be transported by El Al, we might be talking.

Well that may catch people that already have a fever, but what about the people that have been exposed and are not yet showing any symptoms......that really stops nothing.....those people just don't need to come here at all, or they need to be quarantined for 21 days before they travel. That is 21 days if that is the real time frame I have heard as many as 42 days.

Oh, I feel SO much better now - NOT! (Especially considering how many times a year I fly in and out of Chicago).

I'm sure the screening goes something like..

"Have you been to Africa recently"?

"Have you rolled around in the bodily secretions of a person infected with Ebola?"

No?

Alrighty then! Have a nice day and enjoy your infectious tour..errr..visit...here in the US of A!

This is all window dressing.

We must keep up the fight for NO flights from Ebola-infected countries. ZERO.

In my humble opinion that is not good enough, they are still LETTING them get to our shores. Sorry, but until their outbreaks are contained, nobody in from those countries and if they are found in here because they snuck in somehow, they get isolated for at least 21 days and then sent back, with the bill sent to their countries.

Well whoop-de-doo.

As far as I know, the only "advanced" screening they're doing here in Atlanta is taking their temperature and asking where they've been---just like before.

The bad news continues to be that if they are found to be someone who is suspect, I believe they are taken to an appropriate medical facility in the States, likely at the TAXPAYERS cost. I guess this is all part of levelling the playing field by making the "wealthier" nations pick up the tab. Sounds right in line with the playbook of sharing the wealth.

I don't buy it. I can lower a fever with Ibuprofen. What invasive procedure could they do? Sounds political.

Absolutely. That is why all travelers from that area must be kept from arriving at our airports. Big Deal if they actually catch them with symptoms at the airport. They would go straight to one of our hospitals, potentially infecting more people until they could be isolated in one of the special hospitals with bio-containment units. We only have 11 beds for the entire country! We can not afford to import more cases. Plus it is very expensive to get treatment at those special facilities. (I think I read somewhere that Duncan's hospital bill in Dallas was around $500K?) I think it would also bankrupt our hospitals if we keep importing new cases. How about our military over there? I read that if they get sick, they are going to bring them back to the USA for treatment. I would rather one of those 11 beds go to one of our service men/women than a non-citizen who has no business being over here.

I think a point that we're all missing is that its not only what we do, but how the rest of the world reacts to the region. Lets say some contaminated nationals or business visitors from the outbreak countries travel abroad to points in Europe or wherever, unknowingly begin to contaminate their friends and family, who then in turn then travel back to the U.S. You now have layers of people, not looking like they're African Nationals, acting as carriers of the virus. Now, you can't tell who might have it....
