Chapter Eighteen – Suzy’s Lineage
Jim sat in the waiting room watching through the hole Kathy made in the wall. Back in the Motel Albert and Rebecca were up late watching TV. The Demon box had completely taken them over. In the next room Suzy and Kathy were making plans to go shopping.
Jim couldn’t stop thinking about the man that did this thing to Mable. Who was he? Why did he do it? What should they do with him? Jim thought about the things he could do to him. With the man shackled and cuffed. He could blink him on to the tracks in front of a speeding train. Then stop time at the last moment, and blink him out. Jim thought about blinking hem up a thousand feet in the air, and letting him fall. Then he could stop time when he was about ten feet from the ground. Then he could touch him and jerk his hand away, so he only fell a few inches at a time. Then blink him out at the last moment.
Jim thought about what he could do if he had Kathy make him invisible. Then he could push him down every time he tried to get up. Then slap his face. Then he saw Nurses rushing to Mable’s room. Jim blinked to the door as he heard one nurse say “How could you let this happen?”
Mable was jerking around pulling off the wires, and trying to pull out the tube in her throat. Jim freaked and called out, “By the power of Njal I command time to stop.”
Then he blinked to the Motel. Suzy was in one bed, and Kathy was in the other. As soon as Jim appeared Suzy sat up in bed questioning, “What’s wrong?”
Taking a deep breath Jim informed, “I’ve stopped time. We have a problem and I need you.”
Suzy threw the covers off and explained, “I was just lying thinking anyway. What’s going on?”
Jim replied, “Mable woke up and is trying to rip everything out.”
Suzy advised, “Just let me put my dress on and we’ll go.
Suzy slipped her dress over her head and Jim blinked her out in her bare feet. Appearing in Intensive care Suzy touched a Nurse.
The woman turned her head and demanded, “How did you get in here?”
Suzy asked, “What’s happening?”
The woman insisted, “You need to leave now!”
Suzy insisted, “Look at your patient and coworkers.”
She turned her head as Jim took Suzy’s arm, and blinked them out. They appeared on the center span of the Hawthorne Bridge. Overlooking the river Suzy pushed Love into her. Then Jim urged, “Relax and enjoy the view. Take it all in, because this will never happen again. No sound, nothing moving, even the lights aren’t flickering. Look at the light reflection on the water. Not one ripple is moving. The world has come to a stop just for you.”
Suzy pushed another ball of love into her and whispered; “Now you know this isn’t possible so tell me what happened. In a moment all hell is going to break loose again.”
The woman took a deep breath and mumbled, “Ronda missed the 1:00 injection, and the sedative wore off, and she woke up.”
Jim put his hand on her shoulder and whispered, “Are you ready to go back, or do you need a moment?”
The woman asked, “Can’t we just stay here?”
Jim replied, “I’ve wished that myself, but life must go on.”
Then Jim blinked them back to the Intensive care unit outside the door. Jim and Suzy moved away and she froze. Jim explained, “I’ll have to move her back to the room.”
Suzy questioned, “You think you should get Kathy to make us invisible? I’ll have to push Love in her at least three times, and with the two Nurses touching her. They will come to life each time I do it, and they will see me standing there doing it.”
Jim replied, “I don’t think it matters. They will only see you for a flash each time. When I start time I think none of them would admit to seeing you.”
Then Jim touched the Nurse and blinked her back to her place in the room, and pulled his hand away. Then he came back out to Suzy and insisted, “Your turn, I’ll wait out here until you’re done.”
Suzy went in the room and stood by the Nurse on the far side of the bed. Then she made a ball of bright flashing colored light, and pushed it into Mable. She jerked a little. Then Suzy did it again, and again. Then she went out with Jim taking his arm, as Jim called out, “By the power of Njal I command time to start.”
They stood there watching, as the Nurse holding the arm with the IV barked, “Get over here with that sedative Kim.”
The Nurse they took to the Bridge rushed to her side and injected the sedative in the IV tube. The other Nurse insisted, “Help me hook the leads back up.”
Jim blinked Suzy back to the waiting room, and they watched through the hole Kathy made. Soon one by one the Nurses left the room. Then everything went back to normal. Then Suzy gave Jim a hug and pushed love into his back, and whispered, “Thank you my Time Lord. I Love you more than you will ever know. How lucky we are to be able to help people for a job.”
Jim mumbled, “It comes at a price though.”
Suzy whispered, “What’s that?”
Jim mumbled. “Demons dear, we have to fight evil.”
Suzy squeezed Jim tight, “That’s why we have a Hangman my Love. I’ll just stay here with you until you go get Albert in the morning.”
Suzy sat next to Jim and leaned her head on his arm, and drifted off to sleep. The rest of the night was quiet. Jim read his book until time to go get Albert. Then he kissed Suzy on the head and whispered, “It’s time. You need to wake.”
Slowly Suzy came to life, and Jim insisted, “I’ll be right back. I’m getting Albert.”
After leaving Rebecca and Albert at the Hospital, Jim went to breakfast with Suzy and Kathy. Then they went shopping and to the water front. Kathy leaned against the waterfront wall rail and revealed, “This is so different than when I came here with Hawkins. Nothing is the same as it was then. It doesn’t even look like the same river.”
Suzy wiped a tear from Kathy’s cheek as little stars sparkled and the tear turned into a rainbow and faded away. Jim put one arm around Suzy and the other around Kathy, as they looked at the river.
Looking out at the river Jim confessed, “You know we don’t even know anything about Mable.”
Kathy revealed, “I know how she got the Dress Shop. She came to Dention in 1867 when she was 19. She would sit in front of the General Store offering to sew patches on people’s clothes. Hanks wife Johan took a liking to her and paid Victoria to put her up in the Boardinghouse. Johan would tell her customers things like it will take weeks to get that from San Francisco, or it will take months to get that from New York. Mable can make it in a few weeks. Then they would buy the fabric, thread, and what it took to make it.
Then when Mable would come to sit in front of the store Johan would bring her in the store and show what they wanted. It was a win for the store making money on the goods, and Mable making money making the garments. Johan loved Mable as the daughter she never had, and talked Hank into building the Dress Shop. You see the Dress Shop is Hanks, but he charges Mable nothing. To him it keeps the love of Johan alive. That’s all I know about her. How she got here, and where she came from she never told me.”
Suzy disclosed, “Wow, she never told me any of that stuff.”
Kathy replied, “I would have thought Victoria would have told you. I traded Mable my Cry Baby story for that one when I first got here.”
Jim spoke up, “We need to take Albert and Rebecca lunch. They said hamburgers and fries were fine. I think we’ll go to Burger King this time. I think we’ll just get everyone a Whopper, Fries, and chocolate milkshake. What do you think about that?”
Suzy and Kathy agreed and they were off to Burger King. They got their food and went to the bathroom and huddled together. Suzy made a ball of bright flashing colored light, and Kathy shot it with a little spark. The ball exploded into a million little flashing stars, and they all turned invisible. Then Jim blinked them to Albert and Rebecca at the Hospital.
When it was clear Kathy made them all visible, and they passed out the food and ate. As they ate there food and talked. Suzy told about what Kathy told them about Mable.
That’s when Rebecca revealed, “It was the year before Albert’s wife died that Mable came to Dention. Albert’s wife Adeline would bring her things to eat, as she was barely making enough to feed herself. Everyone in town knew she was living in the shed behind the Feed and Seed. That lasted about two weeks. Then Johan moved her to the Boardinghouse. When Adeline passed away I moved to Dention to keep my promise to her. Albert couldn’t go back into their house, because everything reminded him of Adeline. That’s when we both got rooms at the boarding house.
That’s when I found that Mable had been married to Lucas Quinn. He never worked and drank every day. He would beat Mable every chance he got. He ran up a large bill at the local pub, and traded Mable’s services for the bill. When she refused he beat her until she couldn’t walk. A few days later her friend Isabella found Mable on the floor in her blood stained dress unresponsive. She went and got her husband Martin. Together they took her home and got a doctor.
It took a week for her to get well enough to walk. Then Martin took her to the stage line, and gave her twenty five dollars. Then told her to go as far as the money would take her, and he told her to change her name. She married him at 15, and it took her four years to escape him. I’m sure you know about her life when she came to the Boardinghouse.
Suzy replied, “We do now.”
Kathy was watching through the hole she made in the wall and announced, “The doctor just went into Mable’s room.”
Jim jumped up and insisted, “Shoot me Kathy I’m going in.”
With that Kathy shot Jim with a little spark, and he blinked out. Standing at the doorway Jim listened to the doctor. “It looks like the swelling is staying down nicely. The bruising doesn’t look like an accident to me. I’d swear it’s a large hand print, but everything is looking good. I say we take the airway out tomorrow, and see how she dose. If it goes good we can wake her up, and she should be in a room the day after tomorrow.”
Jim blinked out and had Kathy make him visible again. Then he let everyone know the worst was almost over.
Kathy Jim and Suzy went back to the Motel and Jim questioned, “Suzy, you want to see your birth mother? I can take you there with the book.”
Suzy looked stunned and stared at Jim. Then she queried, “We can do that?”
Jim replied, “Sure, I’ll just have to tell the book to take me to your birth.”
Suzy stepped next to Jim shaking as she took his hand and said, “Take me.”
Jim looked to Kathy and insisted, “Make us invisible.”
Kathy replied, “Only if I get to go.”
Suzy held out her hand. Then Kathy shot them and took her hand. Jim put his hand on the book and called out, “Take me to the birth of Suzan Ann White.”
In an instant they were standing in a Hospital room in 1990. There was a teenage girl giving birth, with her mother holding her hand saying, “Push Molly!”
The baby came out crying and the doctor announced, “It’s a girl at 9:15 March 16, 1990. Do you have a name?
Molly cried, “Suzan Eda Williams.”
Then they took the baby away, and Molly cried uncontrollably as the mother assured, “We talked about this Molly. The baby is going to a good home. You’re just too young to raise a child.”
Suzy tugged Jim’s arm and ordered, “Get me out of here.”
Jim blinked them back to the Motel as a tear slipped down Suzy’s cheek. Kathy hugged her tight as the room filled with little flickering stars. The stars surrounded Kathy and Suzy as they exploded in the air with little flashes. Jim felt bad that he took Suzy and put her through that.
Jim whispered, “Your mother loved you Suzan, and didn’t give you up. You were taken from her.”
Suzy sniffled, “I know, but it was so sad. That should be a happy time. I got to go back and find out who she is.”
Jim replied, “If you want I’ll go. I’ll get a pad and write it all down.”
Suzy argued, “No not yet. I spent years trying to find her, and I need time to accept what I saw.”
Things seamed normal. Then the next day came and it was time to take out the breathing tube. Two Nurses and the Doctor stood over Mable, as the doctor removed the tube. Invisibly Jim, Kathy, and Suzy watched from the door way, as Mable took her first breath on her own, and the Doctor informed, “She seems to be doing well. Keep a close eye on her, and if she does well. We’ll wake her up and move her to a room tomorrow.”
Jim blinked them to the waiting room with Albert and Rebeca. Then they shared what they heard, and talked about taking Mable home.
Jim insisted, “We need to leave her in Lambert for a few days. Have the doctor there watch her. One of us will have to stay there to stop time if things go south, and call me. Albert has to decide what we’re going to do with the sicko. That leaves Suzy or Kathy to do it.”
Rebecca interrupted, “I’ve been thinking about this guy, and why he picked Mable. You think it could be her Husband? It just took Lucas Quinn eight years to find her.”
Albert stomped his foot and growled, “We can’t believe that! If it’s true we can’t do a thing to him by the law. Jim and I can’t know that. We took an oath, so don’t tell us if you find that out.”
Jim smiled, “I’ve been thinking about that. There is nothing in the law about scaring someone to death. We know he is Demon possessed. That gives us the right to fight the demon inside of him. I’m sure Suzan can try to chase out the Demon with little lightning bolts. She doesn’t have to use Love to do it.”
Kathy added, “Suzan could hand me a little ball of bright flashing colored light, and I could hold it over his head. Then Suzan could shoot it, and little stars would rain down on him.”
Albert questioned, “What good would that do?”
Suzy replied, “If I give a ball of bright flashing colored light to Kathy. Then I shoot it the stars shoot out little lightning bolts. I would guess it is like getting electrocuted. He would get an electric shock treatment.”
Kathy went on, “I could put a Cloud over his head and we could take turns pushing him down. When we’re done having fun with him. I say we take him to that place Jim told us about.”
Suzy revealed, “In our time they have a thing called. “Don’t ask. Don’t tell.” It is a way around the law. If you don’t ask and don’t tell it never happened. I say we use that. Then it will be whatever Mable tells people. I’ll pump her so full of Love she won’t know what’s real and what’s her imagination.”
The next day was the big day. Suzy spent the entire morning pumping love into Mable. Kathy had made everyone invisible. They all stayed in the waiting room watching through the hole Kathy made, except for Suzy who stayed in the room with Mable.”
Then the time came and the doctor came into the room. The Nurse across from him at the bed informed, “It should be any time Doctor.”
Then Mable’s eyes slowly opened, and she looked around. With her eyes fixed on the doctor he smiles, “Welcome back. Do you know where you’re at?”
Mable softly mumbled, “No.”
The Doctor went on, “Hurts to talk?”
Mable nodded as the Doctor continued, “It will get better. I promise. Think you can try some Jell-O?”
Mable just looked at the strange things all around the room as a tingling rushed through her. Everything seemed like a dream, as the Nurse raised the bed. Then she handed Mable the Jell-O, as the doctor insisted, “I need to see how well you can swallow. Go ahead and try some for me.”
Mable took the spoon and put a bite in her mouth. She had never seen anything like this before and let it melt in her mouth and slip down her throat. The lime flavor was something she didn’t know, but enjoyed the sweetness of it. Mable swallowed, it was a little painful, but she bared it.”
The doctor questioned, “Dose it hurt to swallow?”
Mable knotted and the Doctor insisted, “Try and see if you can finish it. Would you rather have the Nurse bring you some cherry flavored Jell-O?”
Mable just stared at the doctor and he ordered, “Bring her cherry Jell-O, and if she keeps it down we’ll move her.”
The doctor left and the Nurse staid with Mable well she finished the Jell-O. Then she went and got the cherry Jell-O. Well she was gone Suzy talked to Mable, “It’s alright sweetie I’m right here with you. Jim, Kathy, Albert, and Rebecca are here waiting for you too.”
Then Suzy pushed more love into Mable, and the Nurse returned with the Jell-O saying, “One more and we’ll get you to a room. Then you’ll be heading home in no time.”
Suzy never left Mable’s side and talked to her every time they were alone. It was midafternoon when they moved her to a room. As soon as Mable was in her room the nurse came with food. Setting the tray in front of her the Nurse revealed, “This is Cream of Wheat, Jell-O, broth, and some Apple Juice. If you want some Coffee or Tea or anything just push this button.”
In a broken voice Mable replied, “Tea please.”
Jim sat in the waiting room watching through the hole Kathy made in the wall. Back in the Motel Albert and Rebecca were up late watching TV. The Demon box had completely taken them over. In the next room Suzy and Kathy were making plans to go shopping.
