so yesterday I watched the cat watching something

shortly thereafter out wanders a coon from my work area

chased him off and thot no more about it

today I goes out to the work area and a big pail of cat food was scattered

now this pail is actually a 20gal drum with lid and metal 'cincher' to keep the lid on

I have a hard time snapping the cincher when its time to lock it up

apparently the coon has figgered it out???

the day b4 I had a bear wander thru

no harm.. no foul

but coons.....

they have never gotten the chickens but they sure do mess with feed

they will run between the cats legs to get a peanut I have tossed

cpl weeks back he brot one in the house

not harmed.. just terrified

I pict it up and chekt it out

no damage other than scared shytless

I carried it outside and it scampered away

we have foxes and coyotes here

and they have got a number of my cats over the yrs

HATE 'em! Killed one a few weeks ago. 2am, the dogs wanted out, barking like crazy. I head out with the flashlight, and they are jumping and snarling trying to get into the 300 gal Rubbermaid fish tank. A little bandito head pops up, and I grab a length of 2X6. Wack a coon! Took several hits. Then had to haul that lifeless, disgusting, and heavy thing out of the tank. Fish and dogs were ok.

I've live trapped about 9 raccoons. It is amazing the personality difference they each have and their ability to get out of live traps. They will also have compatriots bring them food while in the traps.

If they had just a little evolutionary push they could have been competition for us. Or, I'm surprised we never domesticated them for our own needs. They are amazing creatures and an exceptional pain in the ass.

I have lots here, but they never get into trash or the cats food. I did send the kid out back in the spring to shot one that was acting weird, and I killed on by the pond acting weird. Was out walking and had 3 babies and momma shimmy up a tree not 10 yards from me.

my neighbour

whom I bot the property from

hated them

he was a farmer with a passion to kill every one

he about puked when I had one in the live trap

and let it go

it reminded me of 'pigpen' from peanuts fame

this critter left the trap, with a cloud of skeeters above him

I have grown to loathe them

they knocked over 6 btls of shine in my shop

nobody touches my shine

at one time the wife worked at a deli

she brot home a large container of the chicken seasoning

that grocery stores use for bbq chicken

darn coons nibbled thru the edge and spread the whole workx over my shop

Just don’t give them voting rights. We’d be fooked then.

Son just shoots them - then they go down our newly installed storm drains! hehehehe - they live there anyway, so I wonder how long it will take to clog it up and have the city come clean it out!

Don't really care! We used to put them in the trash cans, but during the summer they do start stinking a bit. Too bad we don't still have the dumpster across the street - not my monkey not my circus on that one.

Yeah DP or Dog Proof traps, they work great. Helpful tip... sit a golf ball on top. It keeps mice from eating the bait, but a coon will just move it and reach in. Also keeps bait dry if it rains.

I'll try the golf ball thing, thanks. How does a Merchant Marine Captain know so much about trapping coons? I think it's good to be multi-talented.

In my younger days when I dreamed of being Davy Crockett, I ran a trap line.
Caught a lot of coons.

Later, when they killed 36 chickens in 2 nights I declared war but couldn't use my leg hold traps.
I didn't want kittie Bootsie to become Bootless.

So I bought a live trap.

Caught quite a few in it but want to get one of those for the real big ones

I grew up in Iowa hunting, fishing, and trapping. Lived in Florida and Louisiana for 20 some years until I got enough seniority and a big enough license to be able to "commute" to work. Now the Admiral and I are back home in Iowa ( no place on earth I'd rather live) hunting, fishing, trapping, and gardening and teaching our kids to do the same.

This. We used to live trap and switched to a paw trap like in the photo because we kept catching things like possums and skunks more than raccoons. Possums we can manage, skunks are another matter. The paw traps are designed so that only raccoons get caught. Fish flavored cat treats from the dollar store make perfect bait. We've only had one raccoon chew off its leg to get free.

The only good raccoon is a dead raccoon.

I’ve often thought that if I could domesticate them, and they having thumbs, I could teach them to pull weeds and help rake with a tiny customized rake.

They would be rewarded greatly. V

Finally not a lurker!
Had one of the little bastards in the attic. A healthy dose of cayenne pepper and a follow up of bleach and ammonia dissuade the filthy thing. The time before it cost me $800.

Mercy! I had absolutely no experience with them until I house-sat for a family in El Do Canyon, Co. Oh. My. Word. I'm glad - so glad - they had a locking pet door. Yow that guy was aggressive. We do not have coons up here, for which I am now very thankful. I'll take black bears and moose, thank you very much!!

At my last place I kept finding large strips of my lawn (1 acre yard) peeled back every night. Couldn't figure out what was doing it. Big strips four or five feet wide and about twice as long. Set up a critter cam and low and behold it was a whole family of coons just pulling back the sod and eating the grubs and worms. Got a Have-A-Heart trap, some canned cat food and within a week had them all relocated about fifteen or twenty miles away across several streams and the Sacramento River in a wild life sanctuary. Also ended up catching a Opossum, a fox and two cats, one feral and one domestic. The Opossum and fox ended up in the same sanctuary as the coons. Just glad I never saw any of them again. That big boar coon was a huge, nasty and a seriously strong F'er. Creepy how they work with their hands. I could see them being able to open just about anything given enough time.

We tried that already- please reference the Minneapolis Riot thread.

Racoons are actually the biological bridge between Canine and Feline. The aggressiveness of Canine with the natural inborn curiosity of the Feline. They are scary smart. They have no saliva glands, that is why they wash their food. I have heard this debunked, but it makes sense.

I caught one in a live trap two winters ago and it literally shredded the cat food can I put in there. Before I went to DP traps, I had live traps torn up. Those teeth are dangerous and that devious little mind is no joke. Wait till you find a rabid one. That will ruin your afternoon, although Distemper is more common around these parts.

We have had large laying hens literally pulled through the wire and eaten before we got the Alcatraz Coop up. Horrible.
