Pandemic COVID is hitting China hard again

I have two very good Chinese friends in China. One in Shanghai and one in Shangqui (Henan province.) Many parts of Shanghai are in lockdown. The kids have begun online schooling again. A woman in her building tested positive and taken to the hospital, so now everyone in her apartment building has to get tested daily. As of two weeks ago, my friend in Shangqui (Henan province) also told me COVID was hitting her city badly, but they hadn’t become as strict yet. Elementary aged kids can go to school but have to come straight home. No after school activities (I have no idea how that prevents spread). High school students have to live at school (you should see the size of the high school. It’s like a college with dorms.) The city hadnt started quarantining. I’m going to message her tonight and see if things have changed.

Is there a high death rate? Or is this just for show of force from the gov over there being butt holes?
I have distanced myself from the news and any TV or live radio I really didn’t know Covid was even a thing now much except for still having to wear a mask when I fly.

Umm guys.. this is getting serious in at least Shanghai. I’m on Wechat with a friend right now who is in Shanghai…. She just said this. You sure don’t see this in the news!!!

There something we don't know here? A new breed of Covid? Sure a tremendous reaction for the ordinary variety.
I’m very concerned which variant this is about.
I honestly don’t think I could take another round of what hit us in December and January.

I’m keeping my eyes on this thread even though it might make my ptsd worse.

That was the Omicron (BA1) variant, which is [officially] what is spreading in China.
Currently Omicron BA2 is just starting to spread in the US, and is expected to be similar to BA1.
Then there is the BA2.2 and XE variant that may come here as well, both of which are considered MORE transmissible than BA1 & BA2.

The real question is if the natural/vaccine immunity will reduce the effects of these since they are very similar to Omicron BA1.

Well, I watched the COVID debacle unfold in China daily as I taught English to kids in China via the internet(as did 100,000+ native English speaking teachers did.China started shutting that industry down last year. We all basically lost our jobs but that’s not in the news.) Anyway, by late February 2020, I warned friends and family that this was a big deal and not something to dismiss, but no one believed it would actually come to the US. I saw how it played out in China during the early parts of the outbreak and was like…. There’s no way it’s NOT coming here. I watched my students in total fear and in tears because they were afraid they would die. The government wouldn’t let anyone leave their apartments except one designated person who could get groceries 3 times a week. The stores were open. The online stores were delivering. What is unfolding over there now is definitely NOT how it went down in 2020. Not allowing anyone to go get groceries in Shanghai IS a big deal. The stores are closed. The government handling the food supply IS a big deal. (And I worry that this isn’t Covid… I worry that it’s actually a supply chain thing that the government is trying to control and saying it’s Covid to get compliance and not mass panic over food supply.) My friend was not freaked out in 2020 like she is over this current government move. They’ve had isolated outbreaks in Shanghai since they reopened everything. The way the government was handling it was by isolating the area where maybe just one person got Covid. That would become a hot zone. If you lived in a hot zone, you couldn’t leave. They have an app that tracks their movement. If you accidentally meandered into a hot zone and didn’t leave immediately, you’d be alerted that you were to quarantine yourself immediately for 10 days. I asked her how long it would take before she got “marked” and she said everyone thought it was 5 minutes but no one seemed to know for sure. Now….. this time around…. No hot zones. It’s complete shut down of large districts. It is my understanding that it is not the entirety of Shanghai. However, whatever is happening has her very upset which surprised me. She was concerned about Covid in 2020 but loved working from home. I should have called her this weekend but Im dealing with a couple other things in my family this weekend and I don’t have the mental energy to deal with much else. I always end up on a video call with her for 2 hours, lol. In regards to variants, she did not mention a variant (nor did my friend in Shangqui… both heave referred to variants many times in the past.) I will ask them both. I have lost significant contact with both because I am too busy with my new job and our time difference during the winter is 14 hours (now 13 due to DST.) Honestly, I think this might be a way to stave off mass food shortages in China. If I am correct, China has to allow the “spread” of Covid to work its way through China so that it looks real. They can’t just shut China down and expect everyone not to suddenly panic. I think it’s possible this is the Chinese government’s way of staving off mass chaos. Time will tell.

Well, there you have it. Maybe this really is Covid and not a food shortage. The thing is, they’ve had the variants before and it was handled differently (read above.) This time, it’s extremely different.

I know omicron was was going around in December, but Delta was as well. And Delta was brutal for some of us. I hope we have immunity to this next mess.

I hope that you do not think that I was contradicting your report. I was mentioning the general official lines about the variants, and what is spreading where. I personally think that China's reaction to what is going on does not make a lot of sense if it is actually Omicron, but have not gathered enough information yet to know what to believe it is at this time.

Please, Please, Please, keep giving us as much information that you are willing to report about what is going on from those that you are in contact with, and thank you very much for all the information you have provided thus far. I am grateful for your reports!

Amen.
DH went to the Indian pharmacy to refill his meds for Covid prevention last week.
He told the pharmacist his story about what happened. The pharmacist said pneumonia was from the Delta strain in his opinion and from what he saw with all of the sick people being tested there … it was not Omicron.

Oh no! I don’t think you were contradicting me at all! I was poking fun at myself because I went straight to the worst case scenario (government controlling food on purpose.) However, what you’re saying is most likely. I just spoke to my Philippian SIL who worked in Shanghai as a nanny. The family there is telling her the exact same thing. It’s a variant. She said the government is delivering food boxes to their door steps every other day. This is not good no matter how you look at it. Good grief. War, anticipated famine, pandemics, oil m/gas prices… just everything happening at once. I don’t know what to think.
