Show of {well washed) hands, please - how many here now harbor serious doubts about the accurate reportage of US case numbers?

1. Multiple states refusing to reveal numbers
2. Obvious lack of reliability of test kits
3. Defective test kits already sent out at least once
4. Ridiculous and changing criteria for who gets tested

Yeah I'd say there's some reason for concern.

Conus case #17
Traveler of unknown age and sex
returning from China
Sacramento County, CA
In the United States, officials have confirmed 35 cases of novel coronavirus, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That includes 21 cases among repatriated individuals, as well as 14 other US cases.

The 21 repatriated include 18 former passengers of the Diamond Princess, plus three who had been previously evacuated from China.

The CDC said it will now track confirmed cases in two separate groups: people who have been repatriated, and those identified by the US public health network.

Sacramento County reported its first case of novel coronavirus in a traveler who had gone to China, bringing the number of cases in the United States to 17. Rural Humboldt County reported on Thursday that it also had a case.

The Sacramento County traveler returned to the United States from China on Feb. 2, Sacramento County officials said, and after experiencing mild symptoms, the person consulted their physician and coordinated a test through Sacramento County Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Public health officials said the individual, who is now asymptomatic, took precautionary measures during travel and has self-quarantined since returning. The county health department continues to monitor the individual.

“Cases in the U.S., including this first case in Sacramento County, have primarily been travel-related,” said Dr. Peter Beilenson, Sacramento County Department of Health Services Director. “The risk of COVID-19 to the U.S. public continues to be low. Sacramento County health providers are continuing to be vigilant, monitoring for acute respiratory illness, and gathering recent travel information to detect any new COVID-19 cases.”

Another individual diagnosed in Humboldt County is doing well, said the health officer there, Dr. Teresa Frankovich, and has self-isolated at home along with a close contact who also had traveled to China. The second individual is being tested for the respiratory illness that has killed more than 2200 people in China. More than 76,700 cases of the illness have been confirmed worldwide, only 634 of which have been outside China.

What we know about the coronavirus cases in the US
By Scottie Andrew, CNN

Updated 6:01 PM ET, Fri January 31, 2020

(CNN)There are seven confirmed cases of the Wuhan coronavirus in the US. Among them is the first case of person-to-person transmission of the virus in the US.
The World Health Organization and the United States have declared the outbreak a public health emergency.
The risk to Americans, as of now, is low, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said

The novel coronavirus, which has sickened thousands and killed more than 250 people in China, belongs to a large family of viruses that mostly sicken animals. But this coronavirus, like SARS and MERS, "jumped the species barrier" to infect people on a large scale, the CDC said.
Six of the US patients had all recently returned from Wuhan, the CDC said. Another patient did not leave the US but became ill after his wife visited Wuhan.
Once the health emergency declaration goes into effect at 5 p.m. ET Sunday, US citizens returning to the United States who have been in China's Hubei province in the two weeks before their return will be subject to up to 14 days of mandatory quarantine, officials said Friday.
In a research paper published Thursday, scientists described a case in which a patient might've transmitted the virus before she showed developed symptoms. The authors wrote the findings "warrant a reassessment of transmission dynamics" in the current outbreak.

Washington state
The first confirmed coronavirus patient in the US, a man in his 30s, sought treatment at an urgent care center in the state after returning from Wuhan. The urgent care center sent his samples to the CDC, which confirmed he had the coronavirus.
He entered isolated care at a hospital in Everett, about 30 miles north of Seattle, on January 23. He's receiving treatment in an isolated gurney designed for patients with highly contagious diseases, and a robot takes his vitals.
He's in stable condition, said Dr. George Diaz, the man's physician and an infectious disease expert. He'll undergo additional testing until he's no longer contagious.

Illinois
A woman in her 60s in Chicago was diagnosed a few days after she returned from Wuhan on January 13. She's in stable condition and "doing quite well," her doctors said.
She'll stay in the hospital to control the infection.
On Thursday, the CDC confirmed that the woman transmitted the illness to her husband, who had not traveled to China. He was in close contact with his wife during a long period of time when she was symptomatic, the Illinois Department of Public Health said.

California
There are three confirmed cases in California: One in Los Angeles County, one in Santa Clara County and another in Orange County.
Health officials in Santa Clara County on Friday said a man became infected in China. Upon returning to Northern California on January 24, the man self-isolated and did not leave home, except to seek medical care. He was not sick enough to be hospitalized.
Dr. Sara Cody, health officer with the county, said officials are reaching out to everyone with whom the man may have had contact.
Details are sparse about the Los Angeles county patient. They're currently being treated at a local hospital, though the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health didn't disclose how long they sought treatment after exposure to the virus.
The risk to Los Angeles County is low, the department said.

An Orange County man in his 50s flew into Los Angeles International Airport in Wuhan earlier this month. The county found out January 23, and the CDC confirmed his results on Saturday. He's in a local hospital.

Arizona
The state health department confirmed the patient is an "adult member" of the Arizona State University community, though it didn't release the patient's age or gender.
The patient called their healthcare provider when they began to experience mild respiratory symptoms. The CDC confirmed the coronavirus on Sunday.
The patient isn't hospitalized, but is self-isolated at home, the department said.
Students at the university petitioned the administration to cancel classes, saying they felt unsafe with a case of the virus on campus.

CDC is monitoring at least 165 people in 36 states for coronavirus. About 68 of them were found not to have it.
Though health officials have confirmed person-to-person contact, they maintain that the immediate risk to the public is low.
There are more than 140 confirmed cases of Wuhan coronavirus -- but no deaths so far -- in more than 20 countries outside mainland China.
What's being done
On Thursday, the US State Department raised its China travel advisory to "Do Not Travel" and warned that it could put travel restrictions into effect with "little to no advance notice." Earlier this week, the CDC recommended US citizens to avoid nonessential travel to the country.
"If you are a traveler who has recently returned from the impacted area, we want you to be vigilant with the symptoms and signs of this coronavirus," said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
Multiple airlines have temporarily suspended all flights to China. The CDC was screening passengers from China at 20 American airports earlier this week.

ocal health officials are cracking down on misinformation related to the virus, including fake reports of confirmed cases and conspiracy theories about its spread. The most accurate information comes from county, state and federal health departments and is updated regularly as officials learn more.
Otherwise, the CDC encourages people to follow flu season protocol: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid ill people and stay home and avoid public situations if they're ill. A coronavirus vaccine would take at least a year to reach the public.
The CDC does not recommend Americans wear surgical masks in public. Surgical masks are effective against respiratory infections but not airborne infections.
CNN's Jacqueline Howard, Elizabeth Cohen, John Bonifield, Ben Tinker, Jamie Gumbrecht, Nadia Kounang, Jen Christensen, Amanda Sealy, Konstantin Toropin and Amir Vera contributed to this report.

The article is missing the confirmed case in Eureka, Humboldt county, California.

Conus case #16
Humboldt County, CA
Connie Beck, Director Social Services | Public Health | Mental Healthnews release Feb. 20, 2020 First case of COVID-19 confirmed in Humboldt County

The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services Public Health Branch has received confirmation from the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of one case of COVID-19 in a Humboldt County resident. A close contact who has symptoms is being tested as well. This marks the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in Humboldt County. Presently, the ill individuals are doing well and self-isolating at home, while being monitored for symptoms by the Public Health Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control Unit. Close contacts of theseindividualswill also be quarantined at home and monitored for symptoms by Public Health staff. With the amount of foreign travel by county residents, including travel to China, it is not surprising that a case has emerged locally. Additional cases may occur either in returning travelers or their close contacts. “It’s important to remember that the risk to the general public remains low at this time,” said Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich. “Despite the fact that Humboldt County now has a confirmed case of COVID-19, there is no evidence to suggest that novel coronavirus is circulating in the community at large.”Frankovich added that transmission in the U.S. to date has been among close contacts and not among the general public.

Public Health suggests the following precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and all infectious diseases, including common illnesses like colds and flu:•Stay home when you are sick•If you have a fever, stay home or go home if you are already at work or school, and stay home for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (without the use of fever-reducing medicine).

•Wash your hands frequently and particularly before eating or drinking.•Promote good hand hygiene in your home by educating household members and making sure soap, hand sanitizers, and tissues are available.•Avoid touching your face, particularly your eyes, nose and mouth.•Encourage proper cough etiquette. Cough or sneeze into a tissue, sleeve or arm. Do not use your hands.•Perform routine surface cleaning, particularly for items which are frequently touched such as doorknobs, handles, remotes, keyboards and other commonly shared surfaces. The county’s Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control Unit will continue to provide updated information about COVID-19 to health care providers, hospitals and schools, as well as the general public. For updated information about COVID-19, please continue to check the https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/.If you are ill and in need of medical care and have been in China within the previous two weeks or have been in contact with an individual who has COVID-19, please contact your health care provider or emergency department before presenting for care. Arrangements will be made to have you evaluated in the safest manner possible for health care staff and other patients.-###-Follow us on Twitter: @HumCoDHHSandFacebook: www.facebook.com/humcodhhs

yes, it seems the article may predate that case's confirmation, or at least, it making it into the official records.

I show the Humboldt county confirmation on 2/20, and the article date as January, with an update also in January....
as to the frustration re: not knowing where the person has been, I understand that completely. I've already lost track of how many suspected and quarantined are in my AO----- I've assumed that it is global and could be on my door step, literally, from the first week. I think we must all adopt that mind set.

HHS has declared Coronavirus a Public Health Emergency in the US
As of Jan. 31, the Wuhan coronavirus is officially a public health emergency in the United States, Alex Azar, secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), announced at a White House press briefing.
  • alert.png
On Jan. 31, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a federal quarantine for 14 days affecting the 195 American evacuees from Wuhan, China. Starting Sunday, Feb. 2, U.S. citizens, permanent residents and immediate family who have visited China's Hubei province will undergo a mandatory 14 days quarantine and, if they have visited other parts of China, they will be screened at airports and asked to self-quarantine for 14 days. The last time the CDC issued a quarantine was over 50 years ago in the 1960s, for smallpox.
  • alert.png
President Donald Trump signed an order on Jan. 31 for the U.S. to deny entry to foreign nationals who have traveled to China within the past two weeks, aside from the immediate family of U.S. citizens.
  • On Jan. 30, the CDC had confirmed the first case of person to person transmission in the U.S.: [12] the husband of the Chicago, Illinois case who had returned from Wuhan, China on Jan. 13 and who tested positive for the virus on Jan. 24).
  • CDC stated on Jan. 30 that "It is likely there will be more cases of 2019-nCoV reported in the U.S. in the coming days and weeks, including more person-to-person spread."[12]
  • The virus has been confirmed in 5 states.
  • Despite rumors circulating on Jan. 31, no coronavirus case has been reported in New York City, and city health officials vehemently denied the rumor.[13]. On Feb. 1, however, the city's health commissioner did report that there is a person in NYC who will undergo testing: a person under 40 who returned from China and developed matching symptoms and tested negative to the seasonal flu.
  • Most US patients had recently visited Wuhan.
  • All of the first five U.S. cases have been described as mild.
  • A study on the first US case of novel coronavirus details mild symptoms followed by pneumonia
U.S. Airlines suspending ALL flights between the U.S. and China
On Friday, January 31, Delta, American and United announced they will temporarily suspend all of their mainland China flights in response to the coronavirus outbreak.[14]

Unless you and yours are part of the 30,600, chances of your doctor or hospital killing you are greater

The docs are already busy with ..."flu." Your doc killing you will soon be the last thing you have to worry about.

Things fall apart, get used up, and need replacing. We can't function if China doesn't function. Whether the virus is *real* or not, fact is, the wheels look like they've broken off the cart, over there.

So, don't discount the overall up-and-coming Misery Index. We'll be dodging zombies when the psych meds run out. The Authorities will be hauling off people for "quarantine," and looting private property for "the greater good". Psychopathic hungry neighbors, general Road Rage, Sky Screamer Hysterics, and the overflow of Ghetto Spawn will be exuberantly partaking of the free-for-all.

Amerika isn't all that civilized on a good day.
Hope I'm wrong.

I don’t know why these additional confirmed cases haven’t been added to the total.

Three more cruise ship passengers at Lackland test positive for coronavirus

Three more cruise ship passengers at Lackland test positive for coronavirus
February 24, 2020

Three more passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship who are quarantined at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland have tested positive for the coronavirus, raising the confirmed diagnoses in that group to five.

Two of the new cases were identified through voluntary testing for the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, that is being offered to the 144 cruise ship evacuees who were quarantined last week at Lackland. The other person exhibited symptoms and was diagnosed after being taken to a local hospital, Kate Grusich, a spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Monday.

All of the sick evacuees are being treated in isolation nearby, at a designated medical facility, she said.
The first two diagnoses from the Diamond Princess evacuees at Lackland were announced Friday. The CDC has said they expect to see more confirmed cases of coronavirus in the hundreds of American evacuees. They are at a high risk of contracting the infection, officials say, because of the conditions on the ship, where hundreds of passengers and crew fell ill during a failed self-quarantine at a Japanese port.

Six people who were under federal quarantine at Lackland have now tested positive for coronavirus, including one person who was evacuated to the base from Wuhan, China, earlier this month. The 90 other people in that group were declared healthy and released Thursday by CDC officials after completing a two-week quarantine.

The infected Wuhan evacuee improved last week but is still hospitalized in San Antonio. That person was initially treated at Methodist Hospital | Texsan before being transferred elsewhere.

While federal officials have declined to identify where the Lackland coronavirus patients are receiving medical care, state health officials have confirmed that an unspecified number of coronavirus patients are being treated at the Texas Center for Infectious Disease.
The state-run tuberculosis hospital, located on San Antonio’s South Side, has reserved a separate 22-bed wing for the isolation of infected patients with mild symptoms, as well as those suspected of having the virus.

Basically when dealing with Gubbermint statistics I use a multiplier to double or quadruple the stated "OFFICIAL" numbers and figure that I'll be somewhere in the ballpark of reality. With this thing I might go with a multiplier as high as 10.

To keep the panic down I totally expect officials to lie like a rug and use every trick in the book to keep the numbers as low as possible. Also....don't forget we're also dealing with both an Influenza A and B double play advancing across the country. We could be looking at a triple play of virus' with the Wuhan outbreak leading the pack!

When all your attention is being drawn in one direction.....don't forget to constantly be checking your "6"!

2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Patient Transferred to Sonoma County
The patient was not infected in the County and was sent from Travis Air Force Base

Santa Rosa, CA – February 25, 2020 – En español
The Sonoma County Department of Health Services (DHS) today confirmed one case of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) patient being treated at a hospital in the County.
The patient was transported to a Sonoma County hospital last night from Travis Air Force Base in Solano County, where some international travelers have been recently quarantined because of possible exposure to COVID-19. The patient tested positive for COVID-19, however they do not show any symptoms of the virus, such as fever and difficulty breathing.
The patient is among one of the recent US evacuees from the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan, and is in the County receiving care to lessen the burden on the local health care system in the communities near the base. Sonoma County is not the only jurisdiction in the Bay Area to receive such COVID-19 patients from Travis Air Force Base.
The hospital and public health officials are working closely with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to ensure the patients receive excellent care and that all procedures are followed to protect the community from COVID-19.
“The transfer of this case into a County hospital should not be a cause for alarm and I can assure you that proper protocols and safety measures are being taken in the care of this patient,” said Sonoma County Health Officer Dr. Celeste Philip. “The County’s health system is prepared to respond to COVID-19 cases and we have been working with local health care providers, CDPH and CDC to minimize the impact to our County.”
The patient was not infected in Sonoma County. DHS will not release further details about the patient or facility to protect their privacy.
County residents should contact their healthcare providers if they have symptoms such as fever and cough and had close contact with someone with symptoms who returned in the last 14 days from China.
All travelers to the U.S. from China since Feb. 2 have been asked to self-monitor for symptoms under the guidance of their local public health department for 14 days after return.
Important Information
As a reminder, DHS encourages everyone to practice good hygiene to reduce your risk of becoming infected with a respiratory virus, such as influenza or COVID-19, which includes:
  • washing hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds,
  • avoid touching your eyes and face,
  • coughing or sneezing into your sleeved elbow,
  • and staying home when ill.
If you have not received your flu shot yet, it’s not too late; annual flu shots are the best protection from flu, which still sickens and kills thousands of people in the US every year.

Solano County, CA
MEDIA ADVISORY / PRESS CONFERENCE: County Public Health confirms case of COVID-19 through possible community transmission

February 27, 2020
SOLANO COUNTY – Solano County Public Health officials received confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that a Solano County resident has tested positive for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and has possibly acquired the disease through community transmission. The patient had not been exposed to the virus through travel or through any contact with any infected individual and the patient's exposure is unknown at this time.

"We are taking this situation seriously and are taking steps necessary to protect the health and safety of Solano County residents," said Dr. Bela Matyas, Solano County Health Officer. “It is important to recognize that we have moved from containment to mitigation. We are investigating potential exposures and ensuring that proper evaluation and care are provided if they become sick.”

While this is considered a serious public health threat, the risk to the public in Solano County remains low. However, as the outbreak continues to spread globally, it is likely there will be more reported cases in the future.

Solano County has declared a proclamation of local emergency as of February 27, 2020, and Public Health has activated its Department Operations Center (DOC) to bolster its response efforts in identifying, screening and following up with individuals potentially exposed to the virus; collaborating with local, state and federal agencies to implement containment efforts; and providing notifications to the public and community agencies as the situation evolves.

“We understand the concern from our community because of the unknowns regarding this new virus. We are working with our local, state and federal partners to prepare for situations that may arise,” added Dr. Matyas. “We want to remind individuals that this virus does not discriminate, and people should not be excluded from activities based on their race or country of origin.”

Symptoms of COVID-19
Symptoms of COVID-19 are like the flu, which include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Symptoms may appear in as few as 2 days or up to 14 days after exposure.

If you are presenting symptoms of COVID-19 and may have had contact with a person with COVID-19 or had recent travel to countries with apparent community spread, contact your health care provider. Before seeking medical care, consult with your provider first to prevent possible transmission in the health care setting.

Recommendations for the Public
Take these precautions to stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like COVID-19:
- Wash hands with liquid soap and water and rub for at least 20 seconds;
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing;
- Stay home if you are sick; and
- Get a flu shot to protect yourself and others from flu, which has similar symptoms to COVID-19.

This is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation, and the information contained in this press release may change quickly. CDC will provide updated information as it becomes available. For the latest updates, go to the CDC 2019 Novel Coronavirus website at: https://www.cdc.gov/COVID19.

After CDC confirms the first US coronavirus case of 'unknown' origin, it sends out new testing guidelines

(CNN)After a US patient contracted novel coronavirus and left medical authorities no clues as to where it came from, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has begun sending out new testing guidance to health care workers, the top CDC official said Thursday.
A patient in California who has cornonavirus didn't travel anywhere known to have the virus, the CDC announced Wednesday night. And the patient wasn't exposed to anyone known to be infected.
The patient is in serious condition, Rep. John Garamendi, who represents the district in California where the patient is from, told CNN's "OutFront with Erin Burnett.
"Whether this person can actually talk or not is of question. She's been intubated, and so may not be in a position to discuss it," he said.
Earlier in the outbreak, CDC guidance to doctors in the United States was that a patient had to have a travel history to China or be a close contact of someone who had been there before being tested, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said.

The new patient who prompted the guidance change was transferred from another Northern California hospital last week.
According to a letter from UC Davis Health, the patient "did not fit the existing CDC criteria for Covid-19, a test was not immediately administered." After doctors persisted in their request for the test, on Sunday, CDC went ahead with testing.
That patient became the first US case of unknown origin, according to the CDC. It could be the first US case of "community spread" of the virus, when the source of the infection is unknown.
"As soon as that case was recognized, we met and we revised our case definition for persons under investigation," Redfield said. "Today, that has been posted (to the CDC website) along with a new health advisory that the recommendation should be when a clinician or individual suspects coronavirus, then we should be able to get a test for coronavirus."

The mysterious nature of this case is significant, said Dr. Dean Blumberg, an infectious disease specialist at UC Davis Medical Center.
"That suggests that the virus is out there in the community, and that means pretty much that everybody's at risk," he told CNN affiliate KCRA. "We don't know who might be carrying it. We don't know who we can get it from."
As for whoever passed the virus to the UC Davis patient, "that other person probably exposed other people," Blumberg said.
"And you have to realize that this virus is so new, that none of us have any immunity to it. So, anybody who's exposed is at high risk of getting infected with this."

Health officials are now trying to trace those who may have been in contact with the UC Davis patient.
"We currently have people in the field working in the community from the local, from the state and also from the CDC," said Dr. Sonia Angell, director of the California Department of Public Health.
"They're contacting any individuals who might have been exposed, and they're isolating them."
But Angell emphasized "the risk to the general public remains low."
The United States has 60 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said.
  • 42 are former passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, the site of a recent outbreak and quarantine.
  • 3 are Americans recently repatriated from Wuhan, China, the center of the outbreak.
  • 1 patient at UC Davis Medical Center contracted the illness through unknown means.
  • Most of the other 14 patients either had recently been to China or are a spouse of someone who recently returned from China.
How life might change if coronavirus spreads
'Simply inadequate' number of test kits so far
There's been a strain on testing capabilities since novel coronavirus was first detected in the United States last month.
In the early weeks of the virus, the CDC was the only facility in the United States that could test for the virus.
Some coronavirus test kits aren't working properly, CDC says

Some coronavirus test kits aren't working properly, CDC says

Since then, coronavirus test kits have been shipped to labs across the country, but some produced inconclusive results. The CDC said it would remake parts of the test kits.
The UC Davis patient was transferred from another California hospital February 19 with a suspected viral infection, the university hospital's letter said.
UC Davis said it requested CDC testing for Covid-19, the formal name of the virus, because neither Sacramento County nor the California Department of Public Health were conducting testing.
"Since the patient did not fit the existing CDC criteria for Covid-19, a test was not immediately administered," the letter says. "UC Davis Health does not control the testing process."
The patient is from Solano County, which declared a local emergency Thursday, allowing it to use funds for response efforts.
Multiple health care personnel were exposed to the patient, Solano County Health and Social Services public health officer Dr. Bela Matyas said.
Since the patient didn't meet the criteria for testing, the patient was not in airborne isolation initially, Matyas said.
Hospitals are trying to identify the people who were exposed to the patient to put them into appropriate categories -- whether they need to be under isolation or under quarantine, he added.
Some of the patient's family members are in isolation, he said. The person has no connection to Travis Air Force Base, which is in the county and has seen several repatriation flights from China.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom said at least 8,400 people have been monitored locally, but the number of test kits his state has received isn't enough.
Pence's past managing Indiana's HIV crisis is under scrutiny now that he's overseeing coronavirus

"We have just 200 kits, and that's for not just the traditional diagnostic, but also surveillance. It's simply inadequate," Newsom said Thursday. "But no longer will that be the case. ... We have been assured of our capacity to significantly, exponentially increase the capacity to test."
By this weekend, 93 labs across the United States are expected to have testing capabilities, Azar said. And as many as 70 companies are vying to develop a "bedside diagnostic" test for hospital use.
The US Food and Drug Administration has authorized a two-step test that will allow labs other than the CDC to test for the virus, Azar said.
Previously, the process for testing involved three steps. The third step had been causing some inconclusive results, Azar said.
As of Wednesday afternoon, "the FDA authorized the use of those tests by using just the first and second step (to) provide a definitive diagnostic," Azar said. "Forty labs are qualified to already be doing that."
US is testing treatment
Meanwhile, a clinical trial is underway at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha to evaluate how effective an antiviral drug would be on people diagnosed with coronavirus, the National Institutes of Health said.
Why local US governments are declaring emergencies over coronavirus

Why local US governments are declaring emergencies over coronavirus

There have been at least 82,056 confirmed cases worldwide and at least 2,800 deaths -- the vast majority in China.
The drug being tested in the trial, remdesivir, was previously tested in humans for Ebola, but studies found it was ineffective in fighting that disease. It was also tested in MERS and SARS trials in animals.
There are also clinical trials of the drug going on in China, the NIH said, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases developed the American study to match those studies.
The first participant in the Omaha trial is an American who was evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.
Participants will receive 200 milligrams of remdesivir intravenously when they're enrolled and another 100 while they're hospitalized for up to 10 days in total. A placebo group will receive a solution that resembles remdesivir but contains only inactive ingredients, the NIH said.
CNN's Steve Almasy, Ben Tinker, Stella Chan, Amanda Watts and Shelby Lin Erdman contributed to this report.

Two items that may be of interest are that the PUI numbers are no longer being published. No reason cited. It's all computerized, so it cannot be any more difficult than it was.
Also interesting that we have dropped to citation of "15 US Domestic cases" from previously touted # of 17. The # of recovered is claimed to be 6, so that seems an improbable explanation.
The discrepancy seems most likely explained as the official numbers having, for an unknown reason, dropped the Texas case and two of the earlier CA cases.
I recall much skuttle butt about ICE holdies testing negative and being released back into the sanctuary state of CA- my suspicion has long been that illegals will fuel part of the fire, and the evidence be hidden from us for political advantage.

Dr. Matt McCarthy, a staff physician at New York-Presbyterian:

“I’m here to tell you, right now, at one of the busiest hospitals in the country, I don’t have [a rapid diagnostic test] at my finger tips.” “I still have to make my case, plead to test people. This is not good. We know that there are 88 cases in the United States. There are going to be hundreds by middle of week. There’s going to be thousands by next week. And this is a testing issue.”
“In New York State, the person who tested positive is only the 32nd test we’ve done in this state,” he said. “That is a national scandal. [...] They’re testing 10,000 a day in some countries and we can’t get this off the ground,” McCarthy said. “I’m a practitioner on the firing line, and I don’t have the tools to properly care for patients today.” (Video, CNBC

6 dead in US from coronavirus as more states announce first cases

Health officials in Washington state announced the new deaths at a press conference Monday and Georgia announced two new cases at a late-night press conference.

Four more people have now died in the U.S. from the new coronavirus, bringing the total death toll in the U.S. to six as more states are announcing their first confirmed or presumptive cases.

Vice President Mike Pence and Ambassador Deborah Birx, who is part of the White House's coronavirus task force, gave a media briefing Monday afternoon. Birx, a physician and expert on global health was appointed to the coronavirus task force in February.

Birx previously coordinated with multiple branches of the U.S. military in their HIV/AIDS efforts and has led the CDC's Division of Global HIV/AIDS.

Acknowledging the six Americans who have lost their lives to the virus, Pence expressed condolences to the families for their loss.

Dr. Jeff Duchin from Public Health- Seattle & King County announced the new deaths at a Monday news conference. Health officials in the state announced the first death a man in his 50s from the virus, known as COVID-19, Friday. On Saturday night, Washington state health officials announced a second death, this time a man in his 70s. Officials said both men had underlying health conditions and both were being treated at a hospital in Kirkland, a suburb of Seattle.

Monday night Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced that two people in the same household in Georgia, who just returned from Italy, have tested positive for the coronavirus.

The official number of cases from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Monday morning was at 91. That count included 45 infections among people who were on the Diamond Princess Cruise ship and three infections from people who were evacuated from Wuhan, China on chartered flights. Of the now 45 cases of travel-related coronavirus infections, 17 people were reportedly hospitalized as of early Monday and two deaths had been reported.

To put the coronavirus numbers in context, millions of Americans get the flu every single year and there are thousands of flu deaths annually.

Since October 2019, the CDC estimates around 32 million Americans have gotten the flu. That’s one in every 10 Americans.

Since the coronavirus outbreak began late last year, there have been around 80,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in China. That means those cases account for just around .0056% of China's population.

RELATED: What are coronavirus symptoms?

Twenty-five firefighters who responded to a call to help at a nursing facility in Kirkland are being quarantined. At least 50 people from that facility are sick and being tested for the virus, including five who have been tested presumably positive. Three are in critical condition.

Some schools in Western Washington will be closed Monday as a precaution after either students, their family members, or staff members were diagnosed with the virus or showed symptoms.

Two people in Florida have now tested "presumptively positive" for COVID-19, both in the Tampa Bay area. Both people are isolated and getting medical attention.

Oregon announced its second presumptive case Sunday. The state Health Authority said the second person was a household contact of an elementary school employee who tested positive on Friday.

Rhode Island reported two people who were on a school trip to Italy have tested positive. A third person is being tested and their school is being closed for the week.

New York officials say a woman who traveled to Iran contracted the virus. She is quarantined in her home.

Illinois announced its third case.

Two health care workers in the San Francisco Bay area who cared for an earlier coronavirus patient were diagnosed with the virus on Sunday, the Alameda and Solano counties said in a joint statement.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar on Sunday said more than 3,600 people already have been tested for coronavirus and claims the capability exists to test 75,000 people and that he anticipates a "radical expansion of that."

As all this happens, people are flooding stores and snapping up supplies in case they, too, catch the virus and need to be quarantined. Stores such as Costco sold out of toilet paper, bottled water and hand sanitizer outside Portland, Oregon -- the area with that state's two confirmed cases, according to AP.

New York Times tech correspondent Karen Weise tweeted this photo from a Costco near Seattle that showed lines that could be mistaken for something you'd see on Black Friday.

Amid concerns of a face mask shortage for medical professionals, the U.S. Surgeon General tweeted over the weekend urging people to not hoard face masks. The CDC has advised not to use face masks to try and prevent the disease instead pushing people to thoroughly wash hands often. The CDC says if someone were to be diagnosed with coronavirus, then wearing a mask could help them prevent spreading the virus to others.

Concerns about the virus' spread has prompted a group representing college basketball players to ask the NCAA to consider holding the men's and women's basketball tournaments this month without spectators in the stands.

There are now more than 89,000 cases worldwide and more than 2,900 deaths.China is the epicenter of the outbreak, with the highest death toll. Outside of China, Iran has the highest death toll. State radio reported the death of a 71-year-old member of Iran's Expediency Council, which advises the country's supreme leader. In two days, the number of confirmed cases in Iran has more than doubled, showing the spiraling crisis of the outbreak in the country.

KIRKLAND, Wash. —
As three more deaths in the United States were linked to the coronavirus Tuesday, World Health Organization officials warned the virus could be far more dangerous than the flu, with a mortality rate of 3.4%.
During an off-camera news conference at the White House with the task force charged with overseeing the federal government’s response, Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, delivered a message to the American public:
“I want them to be prepared for the reality that ... there are going to be more cases in the community,” he said. “But I want them to continue their daily lives. I want them to be mindful of the opportunity again to prepare themselves and their families.”
Redfield said scientists did not have the data to predict the future spread.

“What we do know for sure is that in the right setting, it does have the potential to move quickly,” Redfield said. “When you think that just a couple of weeks ago there were less than three cases in Korea, now there’s 2,500.”
Public health officials confirmed a nursing home patient in Washington state was admitted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Feb. 24 and died two days later. The patient, a 54-year-old man who had underlying medical conditions, was transported from Life Care Center of Kirkland and died days before several other patients at the nursing home were linked to the coronavirus, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.

The Seattle and King County Public Health Department on Tuesday reported two additional deaths from COVID-19, bringing the King County total to eight. The other person who died was from Snohomish County, health officials said.
A North Carolina resident who visited the Kirkland facility has since tested positive for the virus, becoming that state’s first case of COVID-19, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Tuesday. Health department officials in North Carolina are working to identify anyone else who may have come in contact with the individual.

“I know that people are worried about this virus and I want to assure North Carolinians our state is prepared,” Cooper said in a statement, noting that the person represents an isolated case.
New York City confirmed its first case of “community spread” coronavirus — the second case of the virus in the state. The individual is a man in his 50s who lives in Westchester County but works at a law firm in Manhattan. The man is hospitalized and in severe condition.
The global mortality rate — which includes more than 3,000 deaths — is many times higher than the mortality rate of the flu, which is less than 1%. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that is at least partly because COVID-19 is a new disease, and no one has built up an immunity to it.

Still, Tedros reiterated the WHO’s belief that containment was still within reach.
“We don’t even talk about containment for seasonal flu,” Tedros said. “It’s just not possible, but it’s possible for COVID-19.”
Officials say they have learned the coronavirus is less transmissible than the flu, which is often spread by people who are infected yet don’t have symptoms. That doesn’t seem to be the case for COVID-19, he said.

“There are not yet any vaccines or therapeutics, which is why we must do everything we can to contain it.”
Mike Ryan, who runs the agency’s emergencies program, pushed back against officials who wanted to “wave the white flag” and surrender to the disease’s hold. China took drastic steps to fight the virus, he said, and case numbers are now on the decline there.

Countries such as China and South Korea “implemented very, very strong measures that have affected their own economies and their own societies,” Ryan said. “It’s really a duty of others to use the time that has been bought.
“That is not a reverse you can achieve with influenza. If that is a failure, we’ll have slowed down the virus.”

Where is the coronavirus?

Feb. 28, 2020
There can be a big benefit in slowing the virus’ arrival in a country for a few months, Ryan said. Many countries, including the U.S, are in the middle of flu season, so large numbers of coronavirus cases would overwhelm the health system.
In Italy, COVID-19 patients and flu patients are already stretching hospitals and healthcare facilities, he said.
Tedros said he’s concerned by shortages of masks, gowns and other equipment needed by healthcare workers to stop the spread of disease “caused by rising demands and hoarding and misuse.”

“We can’t stop COVID-19 without protecting our health workers,” said Tedros, noting that prices of surgical masks have increased sixfold.
Current information suggests that most COVID-19 cases are mild, said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. According to a report out of China, the most serious illnesses occur in 16% of cases, she said, and older people and those with underlying health conditions are twice as likely to develop serious outcomes.

Speaking during a media briefing Tuesday, Messonnier said that cases similar to those reported abroad were now appearing in the United States.
The CDC is relying on local health clinicians to determine testing needs. In addition to CDC test kits, commercial manufacturers overseen by the Food and Drug Administration are providing tests directly to states. These types of tests are typically what are on the front lines in the United States, Messonnier said.

Vice President Mike Pence said Tuesday that 77 cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed in the U.S. That number excludes the 45 people who were passengers aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan and were repatriated to America, which brings the total to more than 120.
Pence said that a task force will issue new guidance from the CDC to make it clear that any American can be tested for the virus and no restrictions subject to doctor’s orders.
Commercial laboratories are expected to have 2,500 test kits available to provide 1.5 million tests. And the Office of Management and Budget will direct all federal government agencies to review internal travel and adhere to State Department guidance.
“The threat of the coronavirus to the American pubic remains low,” Pence said.

Pence also said that chief executives of all major airlines are expected to meet at the White House Wednesday to discuss contact tracing data for the coronavirus.
The West Coast continues to bear the brunt of the illnesses in the U.S., with the focus on Northern California and Washington.

At least five Northern California counties reported new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. On Tuesday, the city of Berkeley reported its first case after an individual visited a country with an outbreak. That individual has remained at home in a self-imposed quarantine since returning.
“While the risk of infection remains low, the expanded presence of the virus in our community is a reality we should all prepare for,” said Berkeley Health Officer Dr. Lisa Hernandez. “There are steps that all of us in the community can take now to improve basic hygiene and also prepare for a wider spread in the future.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that the California Department of Public Health received approval from the CDC and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health to dip into its emergency planning reserves of 21 million N-95 face masks for medical workers on the front lines.
Though the flurry of positive test results in recent days does signal that the virus is circulating within the U.S., experts advised the public to avoid reading too much into those numbers.
Until late last week, federal officials were not allowing widespread testing for the virus, so many people who were already sick are only now being diagnosed, said Harvard epidemiology professor Marc Lipsitch.

“Some of the numbers are changing because new things are happening, but a lot of the numbers are changing because we’re discovering things that have already happened,” Lipsitch said in a forum Monday hosted by Harvard’s public health school. “It’s really important to distinguish ‘Oh, goodness, there’s a new cluster’ from ‘Oh, goodness, we just discovered that there’s a cluster that’s been there for some time.’ ”
As the virus spreads, officials are trying to push back against Asian American bias and misinformation surrounding the outbreak.
Amid signs that some are staying away from Chinatownsand other Asian communities in the U.S., Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) sharply criticized the xenophobia that had been displayed toward ethnic communities.
“We’ve also seen a rise in racism toward Asian Americans because the virus is associated with China,” she said. “This is unconscionable, and it’s not the American way. People of all ages, races and ethnicities are susceptible to this disease. Bigotry toward any one group for a virus they have nothing to do with makes no sense.”

Several areas in California have declared local emergencies amid the outbreak. Sonoma County on Monday issued a declaration after announcing two people had been diagnosed with the virus. One infected person returned from a cruise to Mexico 10 days ago and was hospitalized, but the case “is a cause for concern,” said county health officer Dr. Celeste Philip.
Declaring a state of emergency will allow the county to respond properly to the outbreak as well as “work in tandem with our cities and healthcare providers to ensure we are prepared to combat an outbreak of COVID-19 in our communities,” Philip said in a statement.

Meanwhile, more COVID-19 cases were reported in Santa Clara County, bringing its total to 11 — the most of any California county. The source of infection for the latest two cases, reported Tuesday, is still under investigation.
Many initial reports of COVID-19 have been among healthcare workers, who are likely to encounter sick patients. Hundreds of healthcare workers in California have already been asked to stay home due to contact with patients diagnosed with the disease over the last few weeks.

On Monday, Placer County reported a confirmed case of COVID-19 in a healthcare worker at NorthBay VacaValley Hospital in Vacaville, where a COVID-19 patient had been admitted. County spokeswoman Katie Combs Prichard said the medical worker, who lives in Placer County, came into contact with that patient and was likely infected by her.
Conferences in the state and elsewhere are being canceled or scaled back amid fears of the virus, but the WHO’s Ryan said decisions to cancel mass gatherings, including sporting events, should be determined by a country’s leadership, based on how severe the outbreak is in their region.

Officials recently had a call with the International Olympic Committee to discuss the Summer Olympics scheduled in Tokyo and decided to continue monitoring the situation, with three months given before a decision must be made.
“I have confidence in Japan that there will hopefully be progress,” Tedros said. “Deciding now could be too early.”
President Trump said Tuesday during a speech to the National Assn. of Counties’ legislative conference in Washington that he expected Congress would pass a special funding bill providing $8.5 billion — far more than he requested — to fight the spread of the illness in the United States.

“It just shows you what can happen — six weeks ago, eight weeks ago, you never heard of this. All of a sudden, it’s got the world aflutter,” Trump said, noting later while leaving the White House to visit the National Institutes of Health that he is looking at further international travel restrictions involving Italy, Japan and South Korea, but will not limit domestic travel.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said there remained many unknowns about the virus, including the degree to which people who do not express symptoms can transmit it to others. He said doctors know that it happens but have not yet gauged the extent, a key piece of data that will help determine decisions on how to contain it.
Fauci said that Chinese data are believed to be accurate and that the spread of the virus there is slowing thanks to “draconian” methods that would never occur in the United States, including stringent travel and public gathering restrictions.
“They have taken social distancing to its furthest extreme,” he said.
Bierman reported from Washington, D.C., Read from Kirkland, Wash., and Shalby and Karlamangla from Los Angeles.
