Colorado to Declare Racism a Public Health Crisis
Nate Church
3-4 minutes

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced at a “town hall” meeting on Thursday that it would declare racism a public health crisis.

Jill Hunsaker Ryan, executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, told the Denver Post that the agency will join the American Public Health Association in defining race and social inequalities as a broader health concern. She said the move is a response to a push from her staff to address the issue, saying, “I like it when my employees push me on this issue to go faster and to use language they think is more descriptive.”

The department had already published an open letter on its website calling the deaths of “George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Rayshard Brooks, and untold others” a symptom of “deeply-rooted systemic and institutional racism that has dehumanized and recklessly taken the lives of people of color for generations,” and labeling racism a “serious public health issue.”

Staffers, however, felt that the statement was too weak. There was internal concern that using the word “issue” versus “crisis” minimized the problem.

“I’ve just been kind of dumbfounded as someone who works for the agency,” said one employee, explaining they were “really underwhelmed with the stance that they’ve taken, and have been really appalled by the fact that CDPHE remains silent about systemic racism.”

“It’s just kind of a pattern internally of dragging our feet and not really addressing why we have’t done anything,” they continued. “I would hope that everyone that works at CDPHE would recognize that systemic racism impacts our work and has for longer than the past month.”

Hunsaker Ryan was apologetic but explained that the delay in response to the complaints was largely due to the department’s battle against the novel coronavirus pandemic. “We are in this COVID pandemic response, which generally sucked the air out of the room,” she said. “It’s so intense. It’s all hands on deck.”

She had also used the language requested in an earlier internal email to her team. “Those of us in government — especially those in leadership — have an obligation to not only participate in that dialogue but to use it to guide our actions,” she wrote on July 2, one month after the protests sparked by George Floyd’s death began. “It starts with confronting uncomfortable truths — like the fact that racism has been a public health crisis for much longer than COVID-19.” [emphasis added]

Hunsaker Ryan is determined to press forward with action that will unite the department, and wants to make it a collaborative process to ensure avoidance of any further contention. “We need a department-wide vision,” she said. “I don’t think it should come from me. But I think all of us should craft it together and I think we will know when we get there. I think we should plan to plan.”

About what I expected from the lib's. Wonder if they are from Boulder???????????

If I could move I would, but I'm not too sure there's any place better anymore. Plus have mom, brother and other relatives to worry about.

Actually, Gov. Polis is from Boulder. I'm not sure where his attorney-general, Phil Weiser, is from, but he has strong ties to the Univ. Colorado Boulder law school and Silicon Flatirons, which hosts its events in Boulder.

I've watched Polis for a while, and am convinced this pair is the brain trust working to get levers under various areas of law/policy that are impeding Progressive vision.

Why are women so susceptible to Liberalism?

What is their definition of "racism"? Why is "racism" bad?

What is their plan to eliminate "racism"?

Weak minds, just look around. Who follows trends? Who for the most part doesn't know what race they belong with, which gender? Sure there are limp wristed men too but most are female. Most women under 50 aren't worth the air they breath these days.

Virtue signal of a "me too" kind.

So if you're subject to racism, you call the Public Health Dept? What are they going to do? Pull someone's license to humanity?

"We decided you're too racist to live - no judge, no jury."

Your traction might be a lot better to call the Attorney General.

AG can call it a "Hate Crime" and see where it goes from there.

It is not like there are not avenues already to deal with racism.

maybe they can declare Racism a Pandemic and require everyone to wear gray masks.
And people who are infected with racism can be locked down. Put in quarantine.
That's it/ That's the solution.
Quarantine white people

The term "schmaltz" entered English usage through Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazi Jews who used it to refer to kosher poultry fat; the word שמאַלץ shmalts is the Yiddish word for rendered chicken fat.

Conservatives/Republicans are working hard to change the course of Colorado - all we need is a bunch of these liberals to hate Biden and 'punish' the DNC by not voting in November.

Good - just tear up your ballet or trash it.

The few liberals I know (with the exception of my brother) have already decided to either not vote or vote independent.

Biden scares the ever lovin' stuffing out of them - and these are people in their late 20's early 30's.

The only Republican activities I can detect in this state are the reelect Cory Gardner ads.

I *want* to believe ... but I don't see it. Seriously. eGOP here seems very ineffective and not at all attuned to anything, and any positive activity seems to be entirely citizen-based, such as the recent Berthoud hoohaa over Antifa.

I am also thinking that the sit-on-our-hands Sanders crowd outcome is not a done deal -- depends on what comes out of the Democrat convention.

Yes, big push to get Gardner voted back in - and keep Hickenlooper out!

I am hopeful ...but who knows....that said...

I volunteered to help collect signatures just recently for two initiatives to get on the November ballot here in Colorado, which put me in touch with 'insiders' of several Conservative political organizations in Colorado. They were not 'with' the Republican Party. I was working out of the Trump Campaign Office in Fort Collins.

I was told by the person who hired me that these two initiatives WILL be on the ballot and are on track to get the required signatures by Aug 3. Which was shocking to me as in 3 - four hour periods in Fort Collins I only got some 100 signatures. Most were NOT from Fort Collins. Some people traveled over 70 miles to sign. I asked him how was this possible, he said there were a couple of other groups that were spearheading this across the state - they were getting the signatures. He said he works in the office that sees the petitions passing through and these 2 will be on the ballot. Which is excellent news! The required number of valid signatures are 124,632, so we'd need more for the ones the AG's office kicks out. Maybe 150,000.

Another person with the Trump campaign told me that there were 50 'groups' of people that have came to Colorado to travel through the state contacting the public (and whatever else they do) for Trump. He said Biden's people only sent 1 group (probably because of the high number of libs here - but they aren't trying to get these libs to vote for Biden- they are just assuming they'll vote for him - which might be a mistake on their part.)

Also, a friend of mine has 3 kids in their 30s that are flaming liberals - the yelling, f bomb dropping nasty kind; they all live in 3 different Colorado cities - they told her they and their flaming liberal friends consider Biden a good old boy and part of the political status quo that they don't like. One son told her he wasn't going to vote. Good. Don't vote! And maybe the 'Sanders crowd' will be irked too and not vote.

So there are forces working behind the scenes. Maybe we can make a few changes for the good.

Maybe Dems in Colorado didn't like the capitol building and courthouse being trashed, maybe Dems didn't like the approx. 2 dozen office buildings downtown Denver that were vandalized also, maybe Denver Dems don't like the tent city of drugs, violence set up downtown. Maybe some are getting sick of this. I hope so. Maybe they just won't vote. Who knows.

Maybe as ANTIFA/BLM continue to wreck havoc at mayor's houses, suburbs, statues, small businesses, churches, and against BLM-supporting Democrats! these Democrats will wake up. Having this going on along with COVID-19 is just making everything for everyone worse.

I asked one guy 'high up' why we couldn't recall Polis - seemed we had good momentum. He said he thinks it's because we didn't have 'big' money behind it. Hmmm. That sucks. I'd certainly donate to the 'get rid of Polis' fund for Colorado!

Glimmer of hope, maybe, for Colorado.

I guess that means they will ban BLM. The most racist group I know. They will also have to outlaw the Democratic political party. So racist.
