Hey All!

I just made a trip back from Walmart and picked up four more trees. They were marked down to $4.75! This is a great time (and price) to start or add to your fruit orchard!

Almost all of the trees were in good shape. (My Walmart in not known for taking very good care of it's trees.) I bought two Red Haven Peach trees that were over 5' tall, a 4' pin oak and a 4' Profusion crabapple. This makes a total of 16 trees in my fruit orchard. The other two will be planted up front between the house and the road.

Since it is almost summer, make sure that the trees get at least an inch of water a week!

I love clearance! :D

Just make sure they are varieties that have some hope of doing anything in your area.

The WalMarts here in Florida are notorious for carrying and selling fruit trees that not only won't bear fruit here, but likely won't even be able to survive. Lowes, Home Depot, and the other big box stores do the same.

Sometimes you can get a real buy there, but you have to know what you're looking at. Usually won't be able to find out what rootstock they're grafted on though.

Alan,

My experience with box stores is the same.

OTOH, if I happen to be there when the trucks arrive at WalMart, I can get some shrubs and vegetable packs that are in excellent shape (better condition than our local nursery) and suited for our area.

I have bought 75-80% of my trees at Walmart. Not a single one has died and they are all starting to produce fruit.

I have had one tree out of 10 from Lowe's die. I also have had several bare root trees that were from nurseries die too.

I usually purchase them as soon as they come in so maybe that's why I have better luck. At $4.75 each for the clearance trees, I really am not our much if they do fail.

I research all the trees before I purchase them to make sure that they are for my growing area.

These are my personal experiences! :spns:
