Still thinking this is a Big Stage Show - there has been no official announcement from Pelosi's team that she is in fact going to Taiwan, The most important thing to Nancy - IS NANCY - can't see her risking her life - what is the upside for her? She only takes actions that benefit her directly.

Plus - as stupid as this team is - this is setting up a showdown for again no upside - force the US to back down or force China to back down which would have a major impact to Chairman Xi who is going for a 3rd term.

Without question something else is going on - should know in a few days

Well that cut to the chase...That being said, considering the state of the US military and the levels of threats the CCP has been making it does make sense to make a public reminder, particularly considering how long we've let this stupidity fester.

If an Air Force plane is carrying Nancy, then the White House can try and disengage all it likes from this trip, but that wouldn't be happening unless someone(s) gave permission for her to use an Air Force plane. She is the Speaker of the House and does get some automatic security and protections but Trump managed to keep her from flying out by canceling permission over something much less serious.

So no matter what "they" say in the press, whatever is going on has at least the acceptance if not the downright blessing of some of the White House "handlers." Now I imagine that group is divided as Biden continues to decline, so infighting in the background wouldn't surprise me either.

Let us just hope that does not lead to actual fighting that the US gets mixed up in, especially not for a really good reason and when the military is already at a low level of readiness.

Global Markets Fall Ahead of Pelosi's Taiwan Visit; The S&P 500 is on course to edge down after the opening bell while Treasury yields tick lower

Tuesday, August 2, 2022, 7:44 AM ET

Wall Street Journal

U.S. stock futures and global markets slipped Tuesday on fears that U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s planned visit to Taiwan could heighten tensions between Beijing and Washington and add geopolitical risk to investors’ already muted outlook.

Futures tied to the S&P 500 fell 0.6%, a day after the broad index ended its first trading day of the new month slightly lower. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipped 0.5% Tuesday while technology-heavy Nasdaq-100 futures lost 0.7%.

Mrs. Pelosi is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on Tuesday evening local time and meet with Taiwanese government officials, in what would be the first visit by a House speaker to the democratically governed island since 1997. Beijing, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has warned Mrs. Pelosi not to do so. Chinese officials have threatened unspecified countermeasures should her visit proceed.

In China, the benchmark Shanghai Composite dropped 2.3%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 2.4%.

Shares of some Chinese national defense companies surged more than 15%, making them some of the best-performing stocks in the region. Shenzhen-listed Xi’an Tian He Defense Technology, a manufacturer of military equipment and smart security systems, jumped 20%.

Mrs. Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan comes against an already fragile backdrop for markets. The U.S. economy is struggling with the twin threats of soaring inflation and rapidly rising interest rates—part of the Federal Reserve’s stated goal to fight rising prices even if it knocks economic growth. Stocks have rebounded in recent weeks on hopes that the worst of inflation and rate rises could be over but investors aren’t ready to call a bottom in the market yet.

“Even if you think the inflation dragon has been slain there is still a lot to worry about,” said Altaf Kassam, head of investment strategy for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at State Street Global Advisors.

“There are still too many unknowns out there. Markets are going to be more volatile because of the more data-driven approach adopted by central banks, and valuations aren’t so incredibly low that you’d say it is time to buy,” he said.

Pinterest shares jumped 18% ahead of the opening bell after the social-media company reported earnings in line with forecasts and its new chief executive said he was going to focus on profitability. Avis Budget rose 4.5% after the car-rental company reported earnings that beat expectations.

Uber climbed 12% premarket after its revenue more than doubled, signaling the ride-hailing company’s efforts to trim its losses were working.

Caterpillar fell 2% after reporting sales figures that missed analysts’ forecasts, while DuPont fell 2.7% after saying that headwinds could weigh on its third-quarter results. KKR fell 1.9% after reporting a sharp drop in revenue.

Cowen rose 7.5% after Toronto-Dominion Bank said it would buy the investment bank for more than $1 billion.

Mrs. Pelosi’s trip adds to investors’ worries that the already strained U.S.-China relationship could worsen and many are taking a cautious stance, said Jason Hsu, chief investment officer at asset-management company Rayliant Global Advisors. The market, however, “is not pricing in a China invasion of Taiwan,” he said.

An escalation of tensions could cause global investors to dump Chinese assets again just after many had been gradually warming to them following previous bouts of market turmoil, said Daryl Liew, head of portfolio management at REYL Singapore. “This geopolitical event is putting a huge dent on that,” he said.

Government bond yields fell as investors sought assets considered safe havens ahead of Mrs. Pelosi’s Taiwan trip, pushing the benchmark U.S. government bond yield to its lowest level since April. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell to 2.560% from 2.605% on Monday. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.

The yield curve between the three-month and 10-year Treasury notes briefly inverted for the first time since the start of the pandemic Tuesday—an indicator that the Fed says has the best record of predicting a recession.

The difference in the yield on a three-month Treasury bill and the benchmark 10-year bond yield declined to minus 0.001 percentage points on Tuesday before edging back up, according to Tradeweb.

Investors were also awaiting a packed day of the corporate earnings season, which so far has largely performed better than investors had feared. Starbucks, Airbnb, Advanced Micro Devices and Prudential Financial will report after the close.

Comments from Fed officials could offer clues on whether the central bank will temper the size of its rate rises at future meetings. Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Charles Evans and St. Louis Fed President James Bullard are set to speak at separate events later Tuesday.

In commodity markets, Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, fell 0.6% to $99.46 a barrel. Commodity prices, from energy to metals, have eased from their highs in recent weeks on fears of slowing global growth. That has added to hopes that inflation could soon show signs of peaking.

In Europe, the Stoxx Europe 600 declined 0.9% led by losses among the region’s banks. Energy firms rose, led by BP, which jumped 3.1% after reporting soaring profits thanks to higher oil prices.

I question whether NP is actually on the plane.

I also question the veracity of Secy of State mention of nukes. No way would US make such a statement from Cabinet level. Note the press report called him the Secretary of States…. an error no serious US official or legit press would make

Considering the past performance of this bunch in this and the Obama administrations I'm not all that surprised that they're reaching for "that" last card up their sleeves.....

Time of crisis: 4,600 shelters opened in Taiwan – Russia: We fully support China – PLA gathers blood plasma & loads landing craft
PLA: We are waiting for orders for military engagement"
02/08/2022 - 16:11
War News 24 / 7

4,600 shelters were opened in Taiwan to welcome the people of the island with the military forces put on full war readiness. The Fleet has sailed and the air defense of the island is in full combat readiness.

At the same time, the Taiwanese army is also moving its forces to the island. From 8 a.m. on Tuesday, response readiness increased in response to Chinese military moves. Taiwanese fighters are in dispersal positions while 8 Mirage 2000 are preparing to accompany the Pelosi aircraft.

Taiwanese media broadcast that:

"In the face of China's repeated warnings, the national army is in full readiness, with all warplanes flying at full missile load and on alert to remove communist aircraft." it's reportedly more correct

At the same time, the war readiness of Taiwan's national army in Penghu, an island in the Taiwan Strait, has been "significantly enhanced"

Military sources told Taiwanese television network TVBS that in the last two days PLA intelligence ships, destroyers and frigates appeared in the waters off Lanyu and Hualien

THE PLA posted a new video stating that it is waiting for orders for direct military engagement.

Several Chinese Air Force fighters flew near the imaginary line in the middle of the Taiwan Strait while Chinese warships have been near the informal buffer zone in the strait since Monday.

Taiwan's government has deployed military aircraft in the region to monitor the situation, this source added.

Russia fully supports China

The Kremlin today warned the US that an expected visit to Taiwan by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi would put them on a collision course with China and cause tensions in the region.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned Pelosi's visit, calling it "provocative."

He reiterated that Russia understands China's concerns on the issue and stands in solidarity with its eastern neighbour.

"We stand with ally China."

"We cannot say for sure at this time whether or not she will go there, but everything regarding this tour and her possible visit to Taiwan is completely provocative,"
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

It was preceded a few minutes before by the support of the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, who considered the US to be solely responsible for the tension in Taiwan.

"Russia expresses its sympathy and solidarity with the PRC on the sensitive issue of Taiwan. The Americans have chosen the path of conflict and it will not do them any good.

Washington is destabilizing the world. Not a single conflict has been settled in recent decades, but many have been caused,"
Russian diplomacy spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on her Telegram account.

At the same time, Iran declared its support for the People's Republic of China

Iran fully supports the "one China" policy against destructive American unilateral behavior.

For his part, China's envoy thanked Iran's position on the "One China" policy.

It is worth noting that by government order the Moscow Ostankino TV Tower is currently writing:

"China, Russia is with you!

However, also on the day of the Russian navy, soldiers sent congratulations to the PLA on its 95th anniversary on August 1.

Russian media: The Chinese give blood

Russian media are currently reporting that the Chinese are gathering blood plasma.

The Russians typically report:

"Local highways have been literally blocked by military and various weapons systems. There are also videos of transporting military equipment by rail.

In the southern provinces of China, civil flights and the passage of merchant ships in the water area next to the exercise sites have been canceled.

The mayor of the port of Xiamen (southeastern coast of China) urged residents to donate blood.

Dozens of SHIPS and vessels of the PLA Navy, led by two aircraft carriers, entered the South China Sea, H-6K bombers took off, and a huge concentration of ground forces is located opposite the Taiwan Strait.

4,600 shelters open in Taiwan – Metro, underground parking lots

The armed forces are "determined", "capable" and "convinced" that they will be able to protect the island against china's increased threats, Taiwan's defense ministry assured, against the backdrop of the possible visit of Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, to the country.

"We are meticulously preparing various plans and sufficient troops will be deployed to deal with (...) the threat posed by the enemy," the ministry said in a press release, amid escalating tensions.

Taiwan has reportedly put its anti-aircraft shelters on standby.

Preparations include marking the shelters, where citizens will be able to protect themselves in the event of a missile attack from China, in underground spaces such as parking lots, the underground railway and underground shopping malls.

The capital Taipei has more than 4,600 such shelters that can accommodate about 12 million people, more than four times its population.

Harmoni Vu, 18, was surprised to learn that an underground shopping mall where she and other youngsters recently rehearsed would be turned into an anti-aircraft shelter for the possibility of war. But, as he says, he understands the reasons.

"Having shelters is very necessary. We do not know when there can be a war and these are for our security. The war is fierce. We haven't lived it and therefore we are not prepared," Vu says.

We recall: "Red Alert" in Taiwan: Gives war survival manual to the people – Movement of Chinese forces with a message to the USA

Taipei officials are updating the database of designated shelters by placing information about their location in a mobile app and campaigning through social media and posters to ensure citizens know where the nearest one is.

The entrances to the shelters bear a yellow indicator, a paper almost in the A4 page size, where the maximum number of people who can fit is indicated.

A senior official in the Taipei service in charge of the shelters says the events unfolding in Europe have caused a sense of urgency. "Look at the war in Ukraine," Amberkrobi Yang, the director of the Building Management Agency, tells Reuters.

"There is no guarantee that innocent civilians will not be targeted. All citizens must be informed about crises... We need the shelters for the possibility of an attack by the Chinese communists," he adds, explaining why the public needs to be informed.

Among the instructions the citizens received for the possibility of a missile attack was to go to the underground parking lots of their homes covering their eyes and ears with their hands, but having their mouths open to minimize the impact of the shock waves.

Some representatives of the civil protection sector argue that more measures are needed. The authorities are obliged by law to keep the shelters clean and keep them open, but they are not obliged to equip them with supplies such as food and water.

Investigators in parliament in June called for the shelters to be equipped with emergency supplies. Vu Enok of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party says citizens should prepare survival packages to take with them when they go to a shelter.

"What's important is what someone takes with him to be able to stay there for a long time," Wu says, citing medical supplies and even tools for building an improvised toilet.

:lkick: If the ground forces in the Emerald City couldn’t stop her from flying in, then neither will the Chinese. She is in God's hands anyway. Unfortunately, we get to pick up the 90 million price tag for her security for a stupid trip -and everyone here knows it is a stupid trip. :kaid:
