CHAT China Locking Down Again

While the demonrats got caught admitting that they wanted hard lockdowns to harm Trump before the election, you can be sure that China does NOT want to shut down their own economy. They provide huge help to those running businesses, especially ones that export stuff unlike liberal run cities here that do everything they can to shut down productive businesses.

I said the above to say this, if they are locking down again, crap is serious.

Only worry about what you can control!
I work with dealerships under the GM flag, we (the entire auto industry) can not weather another major shutdown. Parts distribution is better but still no where near normal, manufacturing of new vehicles along with delivery to the dealerships is really behind. I work in just one major industry, everyone is barely getting by, it took a lot of creative work to get through last year, there simply is not much left to work with.

As a side note, people suck, the average customer just doesn't seem to understand the delays and changes Covid brought down, they cuss, holler and trash you on social media like it is your fault.... For the people in the back, I said "People Suck"!

Well, it looks like countries are getting a mutation which leads to a new Variant at about the same time. These stabilized mutations are the virus figuring out how to be more efficient by random chance.

I found a new channel on YouTube that has a surgeon who is very good at explaining the process; I, on the other hand, may get things screwed up in retelling.

I'm really concerned with the half assed distribution and or efficacy of these vaccines.

6.8 EQ two days ago on Mongolian border, could be worries with the dam too. Interesting Chinese New Year is on Lincolns Bday this year.

My friend in Shangqui (Henan Province) sent me an audio message because we just don’t have time to video chat right now. I can try to figure out how to record it and post it here. Basically she said that there’s a very serious atmosphere in her city. Chinese are very concerned about another COVID during Spring Festival. There is quite literally, a mass exodus out of every city for Spring Festival (comes right after CNY). Everyone goes home to where they grew up (visiting husband’s family first, then the wife’s.) That’s what happened last year. Many people got stranded with the lockdowns. I watched videos of people breaking into apartments to feed their friends’ pets. People who lived in Wuhan could not get back in and posted videos asking anyone to please go feed their pets. There is serious concern that this is going to happen all over again.... but this time they are saying the virus has been imported (basically that they rid themselves of COVID and it is back because people coming to China are bringing it with them..... I know..... lame.)

Yep, feb 12 is CNY. We discussed the rumors of an ”extended CNY” shutdown. But really had not hard evidence to go on - but expect it to happen.. lead times are getting longer - example the product we order today will not arrive at port until mid June .. that is super challenging as you don’t know if the retailers will delete it soon after that date or not at this point. It is not uncommon to see some factories begin to shut down 2 weeks prior to CNY. But they usually open up earlier after as well.
shutting down now is an issue.

That's what you get for giving them outstanding service for years.

I've also heard of additional lockdowns in China operations through my employer. But doesn't sound quite as bad YET as what the OP indicates. Also discussion that China is encouraging factories not to close for Chinese New Year as they usually do. Intent is twofold: (1) keep people from travelling during CNY so lessen spread and (2) keep product moving out the door as many companies are seeing a significant backlog in filling orders from customers.

It looks like its going to be bad again

If you Google "china lockdown", then click on News, there are articles about a lockdown. NYT says 22 million people, thus-far...

Amen.

I am scrambling to finish up my fixer upper house. Truthfully, I’ve had crying jags almost daily from frustration and exhaustion.

Parts and materials are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Contractors are so busy that they just don’t care about getting your little $4,500 job. Hardware stores have gaps in weird places. And insurance here in Illinois keeps going up and up. Gotta pay for the looting I guess.

I sold my stocks in late 2020 after my electrician told me that he was scrambling to find supplies for basic repairs.

Meanwhile, they paper over a rotting economy with helicopter dollars that, historically, can not end in any way except hyperinflation.

My house can be sold when it’s finished but then what do I do with my money? Move to an expat-rich city in Mexico?

Dealing with contractors will bring anyone to tears!!

I would never suggest buying a house in Mexico. An area that was once safe can become unsafe in almost no time. Rentals are cheap, rent something for a month off airbnb then once down there you can meet Mexican landlords directly and have a lovely home for half the price you will find on websites geared towards expats.

It is like that all over. For instance, as property owners and landlord to over 150 units try explaining why someone's frig is getting patched up rather than replaced. Try explaining why a roof is getting patched rather than replaced. Try explaining why there is no choice but to install fans because parts for their particular HVAC are on backorder with no idea when the part will be in.

And it isn't just the tenants. Code enforcement is a pain in the rear bumper and proof you are doing all you can under current economic circumstance doesn't seem to cut it with most of them. We've always stocked a lot of spare parts but after a year of this crap even we are scraping bottom.

Another bit of information i got today is that a lot of the factories are offering bonuses to the workers if they don't travel during CNY and stay where the factory is. the factory owners know the demand for their product and are scared what another shut down might mean.
