CHAT "Careful" Is A Good Habit

TWO medical evacuation helicopters inbound here at the same time. Granted it's a big county in land area, but pretty sparsely populated and rural, yet it IS Saturday...

First, a 4-wheeler accident with apparent broken ribs and punctured lung(s)

Second, an impalement on a metal fence post. Unrelated.

Responding VFD to #2 is making sure they have equipment on board the truck to cut off the T-post and free the patient, to stabilize the impalement for transport.

Once saw two cops dealing with a deer that had tried to leap one of those fences with spikes at the top.
It impaled it's back leg.
Heartbreaking, and I don't even like deer.

We have a family friend who's son was speeding down the road. Hit a deer, and the deer came through the windshield. The deer's antlers pierced his heart, and killed him. It was a tangled mess that took hours to get it all settled.

When I was a kid I was one of the first EMTs trained in our state. Our volunteer fire dept ran an rescue truck/ambulance service, and I ended up as the Rescue Lt.

Anyway one night we got a call of an MVA with entrapment. It was on a high speed two way, and a pickup had hit a deer and knocked it through the windshield/a-pillars of an oncoming Honda civic.
The deer went all the way through the Honda, and the carcass was laying behind it on the roadway.
Needless to say it was horrific.

The two occupants of the Honda were wearing heavy coats- it was midwinter- and it probably saved their lives. They had glass in the eyes, and lacerations but were alive...But being drenched in blood it was quite a mess.

Once we pried the doors back we were able to get them out and onto the stretchers.
As we lifted the driver out a pile of intestines spilled onto the road. The cop looking over my shoulder immediately puked down the back of my neck..guts smell really bad...and he sure didn’t help.

Anyway the funny part was the guts were from the deer.

Rescue humor.
Both occupants lived, and made full recoveries.

Was married to a Volunteer FD Lieutenant. Heard all sorts of things. Never heard a version of this. Lucky me.

Had a good friend who was (still is) Atlanta PD.
He warned me to never just loop my seatbelt over my arm to make it look like I was wearing it.
Said he had to work an accident once where the girl doing that lost her arm.

We passed a car yesterday that had just hit a deer, the car was a mess, but the driver looked okay and right down the road after we passed the dead deer we had a blow out. Right down the road was a nice driveway that we pulled into. I knocked on the door of the house and the folks were very nice.

Oh Lord! Praying for these poor people! My dh's a volunteer firefighter. Some terrible accidents, especially farm/ tractor related.

Years ago, I worked nights on a locked psych unit at a hospital in northern NH. The security guard, making her rounds, told us that a couple had just been brought into the ER. The guy's new out of state girlfriend was up visiting and wanted to see a moose. He'd driven her around all evening trying to find a moose. Finally they gave up and headed back home. Just before getting back to town they came around a bend and slammed right into a big bull moose standing in the road. It's head came through the windshield, landing squarely in the girl's lap! I guess they weren't too badly injured but the girl sure got an up close look at a moose!

Wow - my husband and I hit a big ol' moose in the middle of absolutely nowhere, driving back home after a church service in Seward 1974. Wrecked up the 1968 Ford pickup he was driving but we duct-taped the windshield with visqueen we happened to have (always prepared) and made it back to town. I still have the scars on my hand from the broken glass. We never did track down the bull after he ran off in the deep snow.

...then there was the time in high school a moose literally jumped over my friend's car as she and I were heading to class.....

I shouldn't be here. An Axis deer (from India, transplanted to Texas for the hunters) did a pirouette over my hood on right side, missed my head (the window was down) by a quarter inch, and took out windshield and all the side glass in the van. When I related that to DH the brave Firefighter and Deputy Sheriff, he went sheet white and said, "I wanna be friends with your Guardian Angel. Can you hook me up?"

God literally holds me in the palm of His hand. My day should have turned out like this. All I had was a little glass in my lap and a bill from the guy who installed the new glass. My DH used to work scenes like the above in all kinds of weather. He knew what I missed out on, thanks for the reminder. I will be grateful for how that day turned out all over again and it happened in 1994.

I just redid a PTO coupling on the brush hog.

One of the twist to open types.

It had come off the tractor drive twice....that scared the hell out of me.

The new one is a spring loaded slide pin. I trust the engagement much more.
