Displaced Hillbilly, so sorry to hear of your ordeal too.

I had 5 years of tamoxifen, no problem, just an annoyance having to take the daily pill more or less at the same time. Hopefully it will be ok for you, too.

Not having enough iodine.
Women in Japan eat lots of kelp and have a diet very high in iodine from eating so much seafood...they have much lower rates of breast cancer than Americans...since iodine was removed from our bread our breast cancer rates have really increased

Bumping this thread for a specific member. They had asked me about ivermectin. I did not take it while in treatment, but dose myself twice a month now. I only whinny occasionally. I did take maybe 6 doses of fenben during treatment. I did not share that I was taking either of these with my oncology team.

As of the first of August, I will be cancer free for 18 months.

Everybody's stories are so inspiring! Prayers for all!

My adventure with cancer began in 2020 when you couldn't get medical appointments or treatment until late summer. I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma under a breast in October. By then my entire medical team had more patients than they were used to dealing with.

I was given Keytruda from November to February but it was unsuccessful. Surgery was in March followed by radiation treatment from late May into July. I have been cancer free since then.

I haven't taken any special supplements for the cancer. Just routine Vitamin C and D3. Elderberry if I'm coming down with something. But I did start doing an intermittent fasting and find that it gives me more energy.

Prayers and hugs for everyone going through all of this!

The Cub

Behold, I am coming soon.
It seems there are a lot of us on the board struggling with this issue, so here's my 2 cents. For those that don't know, I was diagnosed in March of 2022 with stage IV squamous cell carcinoma in my sinus cavity. At that point, it had spread to the lymph nodes in the left side of my neck also. I lost about 1/2 of the roof on my mouth, several teeth, and 60 lymph nodes in my neck. The consequences of surgery and radiation shortened the muscles in my cheek where I couldn't open my mouth enough to fit a slice of toast in it.

Three months later, they found more cancer in the left side of my neck. Removed 30 more lymph nodes (damaging my spinal accessory nerve), then 30 more rounds of radiation and chemo. But... here I am,... now 15 months cancer free.

What I know helped:
Lots of prayer. This is the most that people can do for you. NEVER EVER DISCOUNT THE POWER OF PRAYER.

Try everything. I followed most of the suggestions from a book "Natural Oncology" by Neil McKinney. He has a very balanced approach. He says, "If your surgeon says surgery will get rid of the cancer - have surgery." But make your body as inhospitable to cancer as you can. I did fish oil, turmeric, ashwaghanda, melatonin, zinc.... I can't remember all of them. I did doses of fenbendazole (although not consistantly).

Get in the Word, pray, follow your spiritual practice. I remember thinking before my second surgery, "Well, next week, I'll be in a world of hurt, or I'll be in Heaven. I'm thinking Heaven sounds better." It was neither - my second surgery was tons better than my first.

Don't refuse help. This will be humbling for you. If you think it's not - being bathed by your neighbor who's also a nurse you work with - things like that will change your mind. I had people that I would never expect to help me give me rides to radiation (60 miles one way).

Find out any perks your insurance has. Mine allowed for travel reimbursement if I had to travel more than 40 miles from home. I ended up getting about $2K back from them. Get a concierge if your insurance offers one - mine was fabulous.

Follow a good diet, but use common sense. I lost 80 pounds from march of 2022 to march of 2023. I was at the point if I lost 2 more pounds, the doc wanted to put in a feeding tube - and there were people that encouraged me to do that. So when most supplements are some form of sugar and soy or whey protein - well, that's not great for you either. I did not get a tube, but my diet had way too much sugar and fat for quite a while. At that point, calories were more important than nutrition for me. It may not be the same for you.

Research as much as you can. When I was struggling with weight loss, people encouraged me to use THC to increase my appetite. THC can actually feed some cancers and mine was potentially one. So I did not use THC, I used elecampane and alfalfa tea to help, along with acupuncture. I used acupuncture, reflexology, botox, physical therapy, herbs, chiro, massage - all of them helped minutely but not consistantly with the non-opening mouth issue. I am better now - I can easily eat toast, but I still can only fit one finger in my mouth (sideways - most people can fit 2-3). But when I was at the worst point, I could only fit in one finger flat with a lot of stretching before hand.

One of the best supports was a Facebook group for head and neck cancers. It was a double edged sword - some of the photos were pretty horrifying, but it made me aware of how blessed I am. It helped me be prepared for mask fitting and radiation. For head and neck cancer radiation, your head is literally bolted to the radiation table. Knowing ahead of time made me not as anxious. I got so many great suggestions on there, like:
- biotene for dry mouth
- best tasting protein drinks (Core power or premier protein by a long shot)
- suggestions for any side effect or cancer symptom (pain, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea/constipation, skin breakdown)
- Enterade for nausea instead of Gatorade (which tore my mouth up)
- Healios supplement for mouth sores (literally cleared them up in 36 hours when I couldn't eat or drink much of anything)

If I can be of any help, even if it is just to listen, please shoot me a PM. One of the fabulous people on here (and I'm so sorry, but chemo brain is a real thing) sent me a lovely package with all sorts of goodies. People that swore they would do whatever for me flaked out when I needed help, but people I never expected to come to my rescue did.

This is an amazing group of people, and some of us struggle. If I can help any of you, please let me know. I pray for you all every night.
God bless you, Moldy!

I am glad to read of your success over Cancer…..yes, I know very well that there is always the chance of it reoccurring.

I too am a survivor of head and neck squamous cell cancer. It appears as though your experience may be worse than mine.

I will share a few thoughts about things that helped me.

Active faith in God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Receipt of the Holy Eucharist and recitation of the Holy Rosary. I did not walk alone through the process; I was carried.

I tell people that chemotherapy was very discomforting; the surgery was rough, but the radiation was hell. As you know, the side effects of radiation continue to haunt you for the rest of your life.

I lost about 40% of my tongue and lower mouth. They reconstructed my tongue from a skin graft from my forearm; with skin from my groin replacing that of my forearm. I won’t bore people with all of the details…..and there are quite a few.

As you very well know, the surgery leaves one with significant swelling; while the radiation results in not only swelling by intense burns. This together with lack of saliva due to cooked saliva glands (and in my case, only 60% of my toungue), makes swallowing very difficult.

I was on the typical 2 week nasal tube feeding. Once that was pulled, I was told to drink the liquid food (can’t remember the name.). Surprisingly and in spite of my fried taste buds, this stuff tasted horrible. The dietician and radiation staff began barking at me immediately to consume massive quantities of calories….from whatever sources. I consumed dairy products until I could not stand them anymore. I lost 42 pounds in a matter of only a couple of months, and looked like I has spent some time in Dachau.

In a desperate attempt to avoid the stomach feeding tube and imminent hospitalization, I resorted to what appeared to me as common sense….but neither the dietician nor radiation staff had thought of (I am still dumbfounded at this.)

As I was weak and could not cook, I relied upon canned goods. I took canned soups such as cream of celery and cream of chicken, et al, added canned meats to it, and fresh spinach or basil…..liquified it in a blender, heated it in the microwave and drank it in lieu of the nasty canned liquid food. In time, I moved to freshly cooked soups…and then, ultimately, I took full meals of pork, chicken, sausage and a variety of vegetables added chicken stock to it and repeated the above mentioned process.

Thus, I avoided stomach feeding and/or hospitalization.

A nurse in the oral oncology department told me in the very beginning that if I did not strictly comply with their protocol of treating my teeth and mouth after each meal (a 6 step program) and treating my teeth with fluoride nightly before bed, I would not have any teeth within 6 months.

As you know, after radiation, the teeth are at increased risk of rapid decay due to the lack of protective chemicals present in saliva; and the protective enamel is significantly impaired. I also, continue to maintain an alkaline environment in my mouth at all times…. 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 2 cups of water. (Acidic foods and sugar, which turns acidic in its decomposition are detrimental particularly to radiated teeth.). Also, my dentist showed me Xrays of a noncompliant patient, who only had nubs at his gum level for teeth.

I am very blessed. I am beginning my 4th year of remission, now. Praise God!

I would close by saying that while I am a coward when it comes to suffering….I no longer fear death.

Hope my little input is helpful to you or to others.

God bless you!
