WTF?!? Canada and wild fires

So right now western ny is covered in smoke frome Canada, this is 3 years now , Canada's forestry service used to be top notch fleats of airplanes and an army of firefighters to put out wild fires. Other countries used to ask Canada for assistance with there fire including the United States. What the hell happened. They were known as the source you went to for answers on fighting wild fires.
I'm wondering if there government gutted the forestry service . What happened?

Although, I believe, 95% of his own investments are in US companies!

I figure its a combination of drought, penny pinching on important preparations, and insane Greenie/Comme ideas on climate and environment. With a huge ulterior motive, of course.

If they actually gave a damn about their country's assets or citizens, they'd follow actual research which reiterates the truth the Canadian Indigenous People's discovered centuries ago! They figured out that periodic fires in heavy woods removed underbrush and fuel, but didn't damage the mature trees. Over the next ten years, there would be berry bushes, ferns and seedling trees starting to fill in. Wildlife would move back, and the cycle of life would go on.

Now, we leave it "natural" (completely ignoring the fact the natives were simply "scheduling" the periodic wildfires at times it was most convenient for their tribe. They'd observed the natural, usually lighning caused,,fires for millennia, and just adapted it to limit damage to their homes and lives.

Without human interference, most areas with heavy timber burned frequently enough to keep massive amounts of fuel (dead trees and branches) from accumulating, potentially fueling a firestorm that will kill everything in the area.

Do you know the s ope of these fires ? There are dozens upon dozens of fores and they are enormous...not even nearly enough planes nor firefighters ! Not to mention most are in extreme remote places...alot are left to burn themselves out ...there is a web site ....smoke and fire .ca...I think is the app ...Google it ...it should show up ...im literally in northern ontario now ...it is bad smoke I get it ....the app will show the individual fire and says how big in hecters

Our .gov wants us dead. Last year the fires all started on the same day with no lightening storms involved.

very smoky here yesterday and today

85 fires in ont rite now.

cpl yrs ago a fire was 30 miles from buddy,s place.

he started bringing loads of toys and trailers and boats to my house, just in case.

no real rain in site for cpl weeks.

tues was 38c (100f) in the shade at my place.

that is hot for here.

My last two trips to Glacier and Yellowstone NPs had wildfire smoke issues. When we landed in Kalispell, the upper air quality was awful. Views were horrible. Thankfully it rained the first night we were there. The air quality and views were a complete 180 the next morning. In West Yellowstone the following year or two, we had one night of ash falling.

If they are in remote areas they just let them burn until they burn themselves out. not worth the resources to put them out especially when they have so many. We do the same in Alaska.

We have had some spectacular orange suns and sepia skies. Fortunately the smoke is high enough to not impact our air quality much.

Good thread. I had just asked Mzkitty her opinion over on the weather thread about this phenomena. Just from first-hand personal experience, I can say that these occurrences have only started to occur in recent years here in PA. Something has changed.

I can't imagine what megaton explosions and the resulting firestorms would do to the Air Quality Index. Not to mention the radioactive particles along for the ride.

In southern Ontario it looks like Mars outside. You can smell what seems like a campfire on a damp day. This morning you could see the particulate falling to the ground as the dew came out for an hour or so.
You can taste it. No lie.
Toronto had the worst air quality levels in the world yesterday.

SE MI here. Started smoking up around 4 pm yesterday. Woke up at 3 am and thought there was a fire in the home, the. Remembered the fires. Looked out the window. Heavy smoke haze. Tried sitting on the porch like every morning at 7:30 am … nope … hard breathing, smells like burning cardboard.

A lot of those fires are in areas where they are simply not fought. Wilderness areas - roadless and not populated. The fall snow is the only thing that puts them out. Firefighting only happens when there's people and property in danger of loss.

There has been a terrible spruce budworm problem over the past decade+ so many dead spruce trees, plus blowdown areas to be consumed, so lots of dry fuel. Most of the 18 or so fires along the border between N MN and Canada (BWCAW and Superior National Forest) were started by lightening, and I assume most in Ontario are the same. The last I saw, about 60,000 acres have burned in Minnesota, and some have merged across the border with huge Canadian fires in Ontario.

*Adding: I'm for active management (logging and replanting) of these areas, which would greatly limit the wildfire problem, but the general political consensus leans toward maintaining "pure' wilderness areas for recreation. Until that changes, we are going to have these run-away messes to deal with.

It was orange Tuesday but no smell.
Yesterday evening it was less orange but we could smell it.
This morning it's a little "off" colored out there at 9am.

Heavy smoke from wildfires blazing in Canada and Minnesota is engulfing large swaths of the Midwest and Northeast U.S. this week, impacting air quality as millions of people are exposed to hazardous levels of air pollution.

More than 100 wildfires are burning in Canada, and winds are carrying the smoke southeast. Multiple wildfires are raging in northern Minnesota.

High levels of fine particulate matter in the air from smoke can be unhealthy, especially for sensitive groups such as children and people with heart or lung conditions.

Air quality today​

Detroit, Minneapolis and Chicago ranked among the top five most polluted major cities in the world on Thursday, as air quality alerts stretched from Minnesota to parts of the Northeast.


Minnesota officials issued an air quality alert through Friday for areas including the Twin Cities metro area, with very heavy smoke expected across the state's northeastern corner. Air quality levels in northeast Minnesota reached hazardous levels, making it unsafe for everyone.
