PREP BRUCE BEACH Happy 4th

Well,
since I last wrote -
Starbucks has announced it's closing 600 stores in the United States.

http://tinyurl.com/5ucywz

That means thousands more job layoffs.

One news headline today was;

Economy extends job loss streak

(Reuters) - U.S. employers cut workers 62,000 in June from their payrolls
for a sixth straight month and for the longest losing streak for the labor
market since 2002.

An AP headline:

Service sector contracts as orders fall

NEW YORK - Higher oil prices caused service businesses to shrink in June, as
falling new orders and rising costs hit the nation's coffee shops, paper
mills and corner stores.

{So - what will REALLY higher oil prices do for July?]

Then from Reuters:

S&P 500 in bear market territory

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Thursday, pushing the S&P 500 index
below a level that signifies the onset of a bear market, after a report
showed an unexpected contraction in the U.S. services sector in June.

Then from AP Thu Jul 3

Japan shares fall 11th straight session

TOKYO - Japan's key stock index extended its sell-off to an 11th straight
session Thursday — its longest slide in 54 years.

[They need to learn how
we manipulate the Dow.]

[The US system
reminds me of the doctor
who treated patients
by retouching the x-rays.]

Also from AP

Analyst: GM not in immediate danger of bankruptcy

DETROIT - An auto analyst with JPMorgan says General Motors Corp. is not in
danger of an imminent bankruptcy, but will need to raise about $10 billion
in cash to weather the downturn in U.S. auto sales.

[I am not in immediate danger of dying either -
but I might be -
if I had to raise ten thousand millions.]

Of course,
big news for the day was:

Oil hits new record above $145

Oil prices briefly soared to a record near $146 a barrel Thursday,

In the face of all this -
the DOW shot up for the long weekend -
as did the dollar.

Which just all goes to show
that the DOW and the Dollar
are totally manipulated.

What that means is -
eventually control will be lost -
and then catastrophe.

But anyway -
it makes for a Happy 4th.

War preps continue in Israel
with major paratrooper exercises -
in fact -
the largest ever.

Iran says it is making field ready
long range retaliatory missiles.

And diplomats in Europe
are talking faster than ever.

Nothing in any of those areas
to which I can add anything
that has not already been said.

So,
I will talk more about things
that I hope to get you to do.
I guess it is too late now -
to try to get anyone
to move out of the cities -
or to start building a shelter.

Shane has asked that I once again
encourage everyone
to read his outline AHEAD OF TIME of:
What to do if disaster is imminent:

http://www.ki4u.com/guide.htm

You need to print that out -
and after you read it -
(going through it with a highlighter) -
put it into an emergency envelope -
hanging on the side of your refrigerator.

Please pay particular attention
to the supplies list at the bottom.

As Richard Fleetwood is always saying -
"knowledge is power"
and the best thing that I can give you
at this time
is knowledge.

Jean also today asked me
to pass onto you
some particular pieces of information.
The knowledge in this case
is how to recover afterwards.

After security -
the first and foremost thing
will be agriculture -
if you make it through the catastrophe itself.

I have harped before -
and I will harp again -
go out RIGHT NOW and make sure
that you are storing SEEDS, SEEDS, SEEDS.
You also need to make sure
that you have simple implements.
Shovels -
Rake
Hoe -
Axe -
Saws -
Basic tools.

A wheelbarrow -
and bicycle would be marvellous to have.
Save and stack up -
plastic buckets -
and plastic bottles.
We find yard sales and recycling bins
to be marvellous resources today.

Anyway -
all those things cost money -
and what Jean wanted me to talk to you about -
is knowledge.

We have asked you
to get gardening books -
seed saving books -
medical books -
and of course all that we have provided to you -
on the free CDs.

But -
beyond that -
what we want you to get -
is a mind set.
That too -
we have tried to provide
in "The Paper".

www.webpal.org/reconstruction.pdf
and
www.webpal.org/reconstruction.htm

Part of the necessary mind set
is to think ahead of time -
what it is that you are going to have to do.

The problem will be -
that there will be no fuel.

No fuel for tractors.
The big factory farms will grind to practically a stand still.

No fuel for processing.
Canneries and manufacturing plants
will be putting out very little.

No fuel for transportation.
There will be very little delivery
to the stores.

What you eat -
will have to be what you produce -
or what others very near around you
are able to produce.

Picture in your mind's eye
how you will have to produce food
around you.
Producing enough food
to get through a year -
and from one season to the next
is not an easy thing.

Once again -
the main thing is that you won't have fuel -
and not only no fuel -
you won't have fertilizers -
and not only that -
you won't herbicides.

All those things come from oil -
and there will be little oil
going to any refineries -
and little output from the refineries,
and what there is -
you probably won't be able to get.

Instead of having
fuel, fertilizers, and herbicides -
the answer will have to be
that you use human power.

There won't be horses either.
We have largely done away
with the horse population -
and those horses that remain are neither
bred nor trained to work -
even if you had the implements.

In the long run -
if you are going to breed animals to work -
you will be much better off with oxen.
Oxen are not a special breed -
they are just any male cattle / steers
that have been trained to work
from almost day one of their birth.

They need to be matched into pairs
of the same size -
and then trained in much the same way -
as you would train a dog -
only to do oxen tasks instead.

It takes about four years
to train oxen / steers
before they can be called oxen.

The old way of harnessing them
was with neck yokes
or horn yokes -
but chest harnesses are about twice as efficient.
You will get twice as much done
with the proper harness -
but it has to be made to fit properly.

Oxen are VERY slow.
It is a different life style -
but so will be everything else.

Not likely -
that even in five to seven years
that you will be so blessed
as to have oxen.
The main source of power -
will be human power.

Forget distances.
Travel time would be a luxury.
Security provided by having things close -
will also be important.

The garden is going to be your yard.
Jean was a bit upset -
with what I wrote last time -
about pulling up your wall to wall carpet.
She felt that I didn't make it clear -
that I am talking about afterwards.

But yes,
you will need it more on the lawn
than in the living room -
and you won't have a vacuum cleaner anyway.

Cut in strips -
about 18 inches wide -
so that you can walk on it
down the rows between the plants.
And about six to eight inches
between the strips of carpets
for the planting rows.

Put the carpet upside down
with the jute backing facing up.
Hopefully you won't have rubber backed carpet.

The best idea is to dig up -
and rake out the entire garden area.
I have tried both ways -
just digging the rows -
and that is a mistake.
The grass will grow out from underneath
if it can.

But mainly -
the carpet will kill the grass -
and the weeds -
and takes the place of your not having
herbicides or gasoline to run a rototiller.

Keeping varmints out of your garden -
will be another major consideration -
and this includes the two legged kind.
As 'The Paper' says -
cooperation, cooperation, cooperation.
You may well need twenty-four hour guard.

Continuous hoeing and attending.
Picking off insects and their eggs.
Shading (very important) and
watering, watering, watering.

The most difficult part may be the watering.
Carrying water sometimes from a long distance.
So you have to do drip irrigation.
A plastic bottle by the plant -
with a small hole in it towards the plant.

Take a pail -
and put a flexible hose coming out of it -
near its bottom.
Tie a string to the hose -
and walk along to each bottle -
and let the hose down to fill the bottle -
and then lift it up.

Others can be carrying water
in other pails to refill the watering pail.

We have told you repeatedly about fertilizing -

www.webpal.org/SOL/

and will still send you details
if you send a blank email to:

Jean@webpal.org

with the subject line being

Secret of Life

Jean got a wonderful email from Africa today -
thanking her for the Secret of Life -
and giving lots of helpful hints about
food storage.

When people didn't have pesticides -
to protect their wheat -
how do you imagine they did it -
back in the time of the Pharaohs
when Joseph stored the wheat for seven years?

What they did was mix the wheat with fine sand.
The sand rubbed off the shells of the burying beetles -
so that they couldn't live in it
and eat the wheat.
Then when the people wanted to eat the wheat
they sifted it and washed it.
So there you go -
there are ways to do things
without our high technology.

I am running out of space -
but each time Jean has insisted
that I tell you a way
using your high tech automobile
to dry food.
All you have to do is put the vegetables
on a tray or paper -
on the seats -
and close the doors with the windows up.

You won't be having any gas
to use the vehicles for anything else, anyway -
so you may as well do this.

There are more agriculture and food preservation hints -
than Heloise's Home Hints -
so I couldn't begin to pass them all on now -
if I collected them.
In the future - however,
it will be important that you gather
and share such ideas with each other.

There -
I made it the whole way
through a newsletter -
without once mentioning the 28th.
Ooops :)

Peace and love,
Bruce

Great post MC2006, thank you! I love Bruce Beach's writing, not that I always agree with him on everything but he is a wealth of info and "how to do"!
Thanks!
