Several things to note with this episode:
The idiot perp probably won't get a felony behind this. Assuming that he doesn't have any priors and assuming he hires a good attorney, the charge will probably be pled down to a misdemeanor, but he'll doubtless have to pay a hefty fine and damages to the victim. Between that and the lawyer's fees, this will not be a light affair for him.
Everyone reading this should understand that we well and truly live in a surveillance society now. The perp in this story was caught because he was captured on a camera at the supermarket. Every urban area of the country - and even many small towns - is absolutely covered with cameras. It's not only commercial and government properties. The ubiquitous "Ring" and other householders security cameras have become pervasive.
You should carefully consider this if/when you are contemplating illegalities or rash decisions if you are involved in a defensive shooting or serious traffic accident. The old idea of ""leaving before the cops arrive" is becoming ever more impossible.
I'm not suggesting that our board members are of an especially criminal mindset, but there could be many practical reasons for a good citizen to want to escape an unfortunate situation before becoming entangled with law enforcement. There are countless millions of minor crimes and infractions which are not pursued by the authorities because of limited resources. Still, you must appreciate that while the cops might not vigorously pursue a small parking lot fender bender or a case of littering, they are going to majorly pursue any sort of shooting incident involving injury or death.
Live and act accordingly.
